Welcome to The Ark

If you need to get away from all the "end of the world" hullabaloo, well, what better place to hide than an Ark?

Hang out, play some music, have a cookie, some eggnog, or maybe some grog. Be ready to celebrate that we're all still here!

The tutorial for the Youtube code generator is now in Post 7 and 8 of The Ark help files. The link to the generator is now in the right column in my links section here.

Please read the tutorial. It's really easy once you know what to and not to do.

Enjoy!

Probably a good idea. You might have a long night ahead.

Yeah, you need a break too Pottery. Just try to be discrete about it or someone might think you aren't busy and give you a task!

Good Morning:
I've been reading back to try to figure out what Pottery is on about. Looks to me like the 14'ers would make studs about the right height for a 4'+ outside wall on the upper and 6'8" is about the correct length for cripples by the doors. Move the stairs to an end wall (or bring them up the outside like I had to do).
And YES: you always need more lumber, time, money and energy than you planned: 14' 2x6 won't span 19'.
Wanders off mumbling.

This is getting good...
Maybe I should just post the list of materials, and the existing floor plans, and sit back and watch.....

You guys are a Blast.
Love it !!!

"Dormers", are they students who live in a dorm?
I thought they were called "room-mates".
Of course, they don't really "mate" do they?
They might mate or they might just mingle.
So they could also be called minglers couldn't they?
And why are Pottery and Shep building a mingler mansion?
I thought Pottery was building a house?

This is a very strange blog you know.

I fit right in.:)

Yep!
You sure do.

Yer gonna need those blocks, mate.

Uh???
6x6x8???

You won't be able to stagger a 6x6x8 block wall and still properly install rebar and fill the cells.

No 8x8x16???
No half blocks???
No header blocks???

Scratch the 6" block wall and use them for??? Sumpin', maybe? :)

I know what I would do.
I would hand him a material list for him to purchase and have delivered and unloaded on site where I tell the driver to stack it.

...or go home, grab the gear and go fishing.

I stopped killing myself for cheapskates a long time ago.
He wants you to save him...so he can go fishing...while you're killing yourself.

But, that's just shep being shep.

So, send me the prints.

> )))">

Heheheheh, yeah, they are 6"x8"x 16"..
sorry.
So I can fill where I want.

But I'm now looking again, and trying to see if a 13' long post (instead of the 8') will not make better sense.
That would give me about 3'6'' wall-height above the upstairs floor.
With the roof on top of that, the headroom area looks to be about 10' wide throughout even without dormers. That's plenty.

My eyes are getting crossed.
BBL, but that depends on whether son calls to borrow my truck (his 4WD has packed up) so I may have to meet him somewhere and drive his truck back here so I can use his so he can use mine to take a film crew off road somewhere.
Who needs them?
Kids I mean.
Me, for one! :):))

Could be an exciting afternoon in Macon today. Will

A stack of misc. lumber, assorted other materials, and a plot of land. Now try to figure out how to build a habitable dwelling with what you have on hand.

Reminds me of a Swiss family that ended up with a fairly cool tree house.

You're good for upstairs. No dormers needed, unless you're a glutton for punishment.

14' walls. 8' ceiling below.
12x19 Master bdr wth 3' closet.
2/9x12 bdrs wth 3' closets.
3' hallway beside 3'stair.
5x16 Bath.

Unless they left some rebar sticking up out of the slab, you're going to need to epoxy in some for masonry. I wouldn't go that route.

You'll only have about 30/ 14' 2x6s left over for floors after top and bottom plates.

Soooo, who needs a roof anyway???
:)))

That I'm not ! But they are so pretty....

I assume you are working around a block wall base?
They actually have a load of 6"x6"X8" conc. block at the end of the road, and yeah I can install rebar into the slab. Would give me the opportunity to install bolts at the top of the block for the bottom wall plate too. Would countersink the nut and dowel it. No cladding on the inside.

I think I'd better send you the drawings I am working on, and you can keep the good ideas coming. Thanks !

Thinking that as well.....
Problem is, all the lumber has been cut to size.
Based on what? Noboddy knows....
So, first I draw a plan and some sections and elevations, then I can see how much of what I need, then I check the lumber in hand.
Maybe a block wall at floor level, 3' high ? Or to the cill ? That could work. Changes the thing though. Slabs are down already, and are OK. Would keep the wood off the floor and dry. Thinking aloud here....

The packing list says things like.... 2" x 6" length 6'8" - 14'0" 168 pcs.
So I dont know at this point what is there.
Hope I dont need to buy more, but it's an option.
Budget is tight, but my fee is not negotiable. :):))

And no snow expected here either....
In fact, it's a nice cool 84F with Wafting Breezes.
Been helping these jokers erect scaffolding this morning, and in between, trying to re-design a building for these new Employers of mine.

I have to be careful, as they cant seem to grasp that a roof-loft area 19'wide and 38' long, with a max. headroom of 9', is not going to accommodate a master bedroom with full bathroom, and 2 other bedrooms, and the staircase coming up the middle.

Looking to see what 2 big dormers (BAH, them again...) will do to increase the useable floor area.

There is a saying we use here that goes "He has Whisky Mouth, Mauby Pocket"
Means that you see yourself as a rich person, but can only really afford Mauby which is the bitter, boiled bark of a tree made into a drink.....

Howdy Todd!

Shep, much the same here with a chance of rain Wed. night. Took advantage of cool temps, high humidity, and favorable winds to burn some trimmings and debris on the old stump.

A small bear decided to climb up a big Japanese fan palm and knocked about 50 of the dead fronds down. Also did a little trimming of some oaks by the driveway last weekend.

Anyhow, that's all done and it really feels like lunch time.

Greetings !
A very bright and cheery morning here.
Just waiting on a Gang of Youthful Characters to appear, to clean the outside of this old house of Mildew. An annual project.
It used to be that paints had all sorts of stuff in them that stopped fungus growing on it.
But it seems that arsenic, copper, lead, and so on is out of fashion.
A shame, that.

An interesting story. Perhaps this might be adapted to other forms of life. Say cabbage. Or maybe we could walk around after franks and sauerkraut, deviled eggs, Boston baked beans and beer to harness the power. RTL a growth industry.

A song that I loved as a teen.
Maybe Jimmy had an effect on my outlook on life.
Or maybe I just like the quiet, clean country living.

"'Cause through 86 years of perpetual motion, if he likes you he'll smile and he'll say:

Some of it's magic, some of it's tragic, but I've had a good life all the way!"
