Welcome to The Ark

goofyrider has been checking in here.

He is in NJ. While the focus has been on Manhattan, many other areas are in dire need of help and have not received it.

Goofy, in my book you are an American hero. I know you will say no, just doing my job, but it's my blog so I can post what I think.

Here is his last post:

SanDay plus 5: No phone, no fuel, some food, good compadres ok.Temps down to 32 Sat night followed by 28F on Sun night. Town put out request for help and over 150 men, women and kids came to assist in restoration. Kind of expect folks to help in their own interest but nice to see effort. Business shut down. Checkpoint Charlie in effect with floodlights and entry points. Report Seaside residents ordered off the island for at least 3 months. Hospital v. crowded. Squad hosting breakfast, lunch and dinner for 20- 30 members and family who are stuck. . This has also cut our response times to 30 seconds. Sample dinner: mixed whole wheat and regular pasta, chicken in squash and tomatoes, veal-beef-pork Adirondack scout chili, new england style potato-vegetable soup and salad Pretty soon rigs will be in street and cots in the garage bays. We had two fire calls at the FD next door. Having issues with emergency gen sets. Somehow once a month exercising and PM doesn't translate to 24/7 opps. Scram caused by low oil and or CO alarms. Son and buds leave for jobs down south on Sun. They were a big help during storm and follow up. Freeze temps will cause a spate of alarms for leaky buildings as water boils off to form vapor which alarms detect as smoke. Electric service restoration sometime between 7th and 14th. Then the ugly work of repairs to heating and plumbing. Basement pump outs and clean up to follow once sump pumps can maintain service. Generators being purchased out of state and trucked in to town. Three members picked up units in Maryland yesterday. This will begin to help with freeing up cot space and moving extra families into members homes. It will be tight till Christmas or longer. Staten Island looks to be a mess. Bodies being recovered in collapsed homes and out in swamps. Marathon only cancelled after NYC Mayor caught with foot in mouth and head up U no what.. Where's Rudy? Where's Harry? Red Cross out to Lunch and FEMA who knows. Both good with PR slow to respond. This monster was coming for a week somewhere. Great road net still a humina. N'atl. Guard in next town over. They are still in water. Out of coffee.

Seems that FEMA and DHS haven't learned much since Katrina. If the President's last name was Bush, there would be an uproar in the press....just sayin.

While the politicians pat each other on the back, many Americans are still suffering. Seems to be par for the course lately, but Benghazi is a post for another day.

Prayers and thoughts are with you Goofy, and the thousands, maybe millions who feel forgotten at the moment. Stay strong, hopefully you will get the support you need in time.

Glad to hear you're doing okay.
Trees falling on my roof are my biggest concern with storms.
So...If we look to get a really bad storm, I ride it out somewhere else then come home the next day.

Hey Mass!
You are correct. A huge effort ahead. The immediate problem though is getting people safe and there are still so many who haven't received help yet. A lot of people getting really frustrated. The tell us we need to have supplies for 3 days or 7 days to get along until help arrives. Well, guess what. Even people who had a week's supplies are now out.

I live out in the woods, I know I have to be prepared to go it alone. But, I also have resources here that most city coastal dwellers do not. I always have 12-16 gallons of bottled water, I have generators, I live on a lake, I can fish or hunt if I need to, I can run my well off one of the generators, I have a barn full of tools and materials, a BBQ, usually 50-60 lbs of charcoal and all the wood I care to cut (or pick up after a storm) I keep 2 or 3 jugs of propane on hand all the time, well, you get the point.

Most people don't have these "luxuries". Some communities are getting along pretty well aside from lack of fuel or electricity. Others absolutely have to have outside help.

Are we hoping people are going to walk to civilization?
We need to either get those people help NOW, or go get them and take them to safety.

And an hour ago, on the news, I saw pictures of those generators for the marathon, along with pallets of water and blankets still sitting there.

I said upon first seeing the damage along the coast that we were going to have to get the military in there with heavy equipment and engineers to get that cleaned up and safe in a reasonable amount of time. I know that national guard troops are there somewhere, I know that the locals are doing what they can, but something is broken. If it doesn't get fixed quick, people are going to die.

I'm not trying to be an alarmist. It's just the way I see it.

Rob, your 'profile' is not only 'cute dude', but goes much deeper. Thank you especially for posting this tribute, giving me a renewal of hope.

BTW, since I've moved south, I can't imagine being without shelter in 30-degree temps!

Shep for Mayor!!

Thank you for your support.
It has been rumored that I am independently wealthy.
Please send contribution to the Red Cross instead as I have no need for your money.
Just write in "theshepherd" in the little box thingy on yer ballot.
Let's send Bloomy a message.

Thanks for the welcome, Rob.

I saw goofy's name in lights and figured to check the buzz.

I am fortunate to be about 7-8 miles inland from the beaches in Tinton Falls, NJ. Gained power back the end of last week.

Neighborhood has juvenile trees so we saw moderate to heavy tree damage, siding, gutters, fencing, as the primary damages to most homes. Somehow I ended up unscathed but lost three trees to damage.

Not too happy with the follow up hit that reads more ominous as we draw near. We will cope.

A number of first responders, both chiefs and indians alike, reside in my small development. They're all worn to the bone but still going.

Good Morning, Rob!

While watching the Sun. eve newscast, last night, I, too, was heartened by those NY marathoners who took to the streets, with backpacks filled with supplies, and ran to Staten Island to help the victims of this decimated coastal region. Major kudos, as well, to those runners (some from Manhattan) who also joined in on the vast cleanup efforts of homes and neighborhoods. This is what Mayor Bloomberg should have proposed in the first place along with immediately sending those humongously large generators (meant for the runners) to the island as well! Politicians' priorities are so disgustingly distorted these days!

Naturally, my thoughts and prayers remain with Goofy and all other NJ / NY people seriously affected from this hurricane; along with, the hope that more people will donate enough money (and time, if possible) in the recovery efforts. In times like these, it takes the full support of an entire Nation and others to help recover from such devastation.

Hey Shep!
When you mentioned that to me, I thought it was brilliant.
Very early this morning when I flipped on the news, imagine my surprise when they were showing a group of Marathoners with backpacks doing exactly that. Not thousands, but still...was good to see.

Musta been an ol' country boy in the group!

Coincidence, I'm sure.

I had a CT Scan of my head done a couple of years ago ref a sinus problem.

Didn't see any embedded chips on my copy.

Warning:
Jogging can be hazardous to brain cells and compassion.

You won't find it on their website, but Mary Wittenberg, President and CEO of the NYC Roadrunners, sent out an email stating that the Marathon was cancelled due to concerns for runner safety because of antagonizing news reports concerning the race.

As I mentioned to a friend the other day, why couldn't the Marathon morph into the Mercython?

Several thousand runners with backpacks could have trotted over the bridges with backpacks laden with blankets, food and water for those stricken.

They could have all been winners.

But then, I'm just an ol' country boy afflicted with absurdity.

:(

Monday morning phone calls and such here.

You guys feel free to share recovery news here or just hang out.
I'll be off and on randomly today.

Oh, and Pcroton, sorry, I forgot to say Welcome and pleased to meet you.
Member Since: September 2, 2008 Posts: 96 Comments: 31733
Thanks Pcroton. I'm glad to hear that. Was able to get some info about what's going on off the Monmouth County website. A lot of good info for residents there. Read that county offices will be open today.

Hoping to see continued progress for the whole region.

I can vouch that goofy does tremendous works for the communities in need.

As a fellow monmouth countyian who shares the same stomping grounds we appreciate it.

Our emergency personnel have been outstanding through these events.

Oh, did I mention how much I hate time changes?

Good Morning.

Well, I have mixed feelings about waking up at 4:00 am. In any timezone. So I think I understand.
Funny thing is, if I wake up at 4:00 am to go fishing, or to go into the deep dark jungle, it's no problem.
Very different to having to go to the airport. I wonder why that is ???

Nice clouds overhead this morning. Hope they bring some rain.
Had a great w/e......

Hey Barefoot.
I heard the same thing about rentals.
Not sure what it means or where it applies.

I am pretty sure they are still trying to figure out exactly what they are dealing with.

Yeah, goofy is a character all right.
Just not the cartoon variety.
Member Since: September 2, 2008 Posts: 96 Comments: 31733
Um, Rob.
I din't know Goofy was a blogger in the thick of things back east. I was thinking cartoon when I saw the blog title. {{{Goofyrider}}}.

I read or saw a news report FEMA will be putting people up in hotels and rental properties not trailers. That was before the noreaster popped into the picture but colder weather may make it happen quicker. I don't know if this is for all areas. Doesn't seem like putting people in hotels and rentals in NY City would be financially feasible. Guess we'll see.

Thanks for putting in your 2 cents at my blog.

You guys ROCK!

We are all folks that believe in being self sufficient, yet we can feel for those who are not.

It's been a really long day for me, one of many lately, so I'll sign off for a while, but carry on.

Hopefully tomorrow will bring better news.

That too....
They going to need to get all the pre-fab homes in place fast, with all the facilities (elec., sewers, garbage disposal, etc etc). Mobile homes etc.

I'll venture a guess that if it isn't Union Made, it won't come in.

Painful to think, but the opposite would surprise me.

FEMA and brand new house trailers don't mix.
Remember Katrina?

Sad...damn sad :(

The latest figures now are about 40,000 people need a place to stay and thats just New York.

And they need to do it now before it gets any colder.

I wish I could send some floor-space.......

Got a nice note from Goofy. He reminded me that there are a lot of areas that are worse off and that the big issue is getting folks who are not properly sheltered someplace warm and safe because of the forecast for a nor'easter this week.

I know he's busy and tired but he wanted me to:

"Thank the ladies and gentlemen for the kind thoughts and prayers."
Member Since: September 2, 2008 Posts: 96 Comments: 31733
Thanks for the show of support guys. (doesn't surprise me at all.) It means a lot to know others are thinking of you through the tough stuff.

I felt I needed to do something where we could express that support to Goofy and to others going through this. Just a rushed blog and not real eloquent before I crashed hard last night. But what we write isn't nearly as important as the fact that we did write.

This is a disaster that has implications both short and long term for the whole country, if not the world. We'll sort all that out later. Now the important thing is just doing our best to help folks with the basics. I've no doubt that communities will pull together and get through this.

That's how we do it.

Thank you for the help with the vids Rob. It was a FF issue, I think.

RTLSNK,
I just watched a funny movie that you'd like.
Called "This Means War".
Two CIA officers, partners and best friends, fall in love with the same girl.
That's when the fighting started.
