Welcome to The Ark

Welcome!

Things that make you go Ooops!

Your favorite mistake.

Things you always knew to be true that turned out to be not so much.

Surprising realizations.

Funny historical stuff.

Stuff that scared you senseless but was funny afterwards.

Things learned the hard way.

Keep it clean, friendly, and have fun!

Thank you for the report and the hugs Finn!
Really important to have friends and family in times of crisis.
Glad they got through okay and had a place to go.

Gonna be a long road for so many. Little things that we take for granted like coffee and toilet paper make a world of difference.

Many of us are financially overwealmed or out of work in the current economy. I hope anyone who can will find a way to donate time or money. For some who can't, I hope that they will send thoughts and prayers.

Reach out to someone you know in the area. Let them know that they are not forgotten. I know it takes time to get things in motion. Too much time. I hope that we see big results soon.

SanDay plus 5, as Goofy says, and too many still need just the basics.

Good weekend to everybody and special warm thoughts and prayers to those up NE coast.

And hugs to you {{{goofy}}}

My BIL had to leave his house and stay at SIL's till power is restored. They only lost a few trees and their fence, now they are warm and can use a bathroom & shower.

Skye,
Thanks. Your "Skyepony & Atlantis" pic is a great capture of a moment in history. You should get a high quality print of it framed and save it for your grandchildren. A lot of times we see pics of ancestors with no context. That one is special.

Pottery,
No, I did not want to get up this morning. Slept better last night than I have in days. Yes...the seasons are changing.

RTLSNK,
Good morning!
You know...you are a pretty nice guy.
Yeah, a lot of us would love to help beyond donating money and hoping it gets to where it is most needed.
I hope Goofy gets coffee soon.

Oh and Ski,
Sorry I missed you last night.
Looks to be a beautiful day. Hope you are enjoying it!

Thanks for the report Goofy.
Means a lot more that what we see on the news. Yeah, lots of folks were pretty upset about the Marathon being held. I get the idea about "Giving a sense of normalcy" on the surface, but in actuality, there is nothing normal about that and it wasn't helping moral with folks that felt abandoned.

Every storm we hear about someone in FL getting killed by a generator. They are handy to have, but can be very dangerous and most are not designed for extended operation. Even the good ones need maintenance when running for long periods.

Good to hear the community coming together to solve problems. The one good thing that can come out of something like this is stronger ties between neighbors and the making of new friends.

Gonna be a long road back.

My coffee is not as enjoyable this morning knowing that you don't have any, but is more appreciated. It's simple things like a hot cup of coffee that make difficult circumstances easier to deal with.

Wish I knew how to get you some.

Take care friend and please continue to keep us updated when you are able. Thoughts and prayers with you and your neighbors.

SanDay    plus 5:  No phone, no fuel,  some food, good compadres ok.Temps down to 32 Sat night followed by 28F on Sun night. Town put out request for help and over 150 men, women and kids came to assist in restoration.  Kind of expect folks to help in their own interest but nice to see effort.  Business shut down.  Checkpoint Charlie in effect with floodlights and entry points.  Report Seaside residents ordered off the island for at least 3 months.   Hospital v. crowded.  Squad hosting breakfast, lunch and dinner for 20- 30 members and family who are stuck.   .  This has also cut our response times to 30 seconds.  Sample dinner: mixed whole wheat and  regular pasta, chicken in squash and tomatoes,  veal-beef-pork  Adirondack scout chili, new england style potato-vegetable soup and salad  Pretty soon rigs will be in street  and cots in the garage bays.  We had two fire calls at the FD next door.  Having issues with emergency gen sets.  Somehow once a month exercising and PM doesn't translate to 24/7 opps.  Scram caused by low oil and or CO alarms.  Son and buds leave for jobs down south on Sun.  They were a big help during storm and follow up.  Freeze temps will cause a spate of alarms for leaky buildings as water boils off to form vapor which alarms detect as smoke.  Electric service restoration sometime between 7th and 14th.  Then the ugly work of repairs to heating and plumbing.  Basement pump outs and clean up to follow once sump pumps can maintain service.  Generators being purchased out of state and trucked in to town.   Three members picked up units in Maryland yesterday.   This will begin to help with freeing up cot  space and moving extra families into members homes.  It will be tight till Christmas or longer.  Staten Island looks to be a mess.  Bodies being recovered in collapsed homes and out in swamps.  Marathon only cancelled after NYC Mayor caught with foot in mouth and head up U no what..   Where's Rudy?  Where's Harry?  Red Cross out to Lunch and FEMA who knows.  Both good with PR slow to respond.   This monster was coming for a week somewhere.  Great road net still a humina.  N'atl. Guard in next town over.  They are still in water.  Out of coffee.

Hey Todd !
Had a brother-in-law here for 2 weeks recently.
With his help, my workshop is looking/working like it never did before.
We even raised the roof 24" and moved things around.
Now, all I have to do is get back to work in there.......

See, that's what I mean about you guys, had a bad night last night, didn't get much sleep, finally fell asleep this morning when I am normally waking up, just started on the coffee, SugarBear's black mud expresso rocket fuel, grouchy as hell, waiting on the medicine to start working, come in here and see that Pottery wants to be part of some Annual Snake-Smiting Extravaganza in Trinidad that he has never mentioned before which sounds really dangerous like the "Rattlesnake Roundup" they do every year here in the Western States, and I get to the part about the venom spitting which some Cobra's actually do, and I just took a big mouthful of my coffee,

WHEN I READ THE PART ABOUT THE 1200 YARDS AND I REALIZE I'VE BEEN HAD!!!

Turned my head at the last second to the right so I didn't laugh coffee and half and half all over the keyboard, just all over the floor next to the computer desk.

Laughter has healing properties, I'm not near as grouchy as I was before. :)

Of course you will pay Pottery, that goes without saying. :)

Heh !!

I dont know how you did it, but I'm sure it has something to do with you that it took 2.5 hrs to get home from town just now.
And I have to turn around and get to the airport for 9:00pm....

It seems that it is 'visitor season' around here these days.
This one is an old girlfriend from Guyana now living in Jamaica.
Haven't laid eyes on her for 30 years !
Think Joan Baez, guitar and all, in the 60's, and you'll get the picture.
She and I used to play at "Club Diabolique" in Georgetown, (me, for food) when the World was younger.
Ah, the Good Old Days.....

Seems like I have volunteered to drive Lady Pott to town, where I get to sit in traffic breathing co2 and getting annoyed while she runs in and out of doorways.
Then I get to go to the grocery.

It would be much more fun staying home and participating in the Annual Snake-Smiting Extravaganza.
A word of Caution though....
Some snakes can spew venom up to 1200 yds, with incredible accuracy..

Maybe it's a good thing I'm going far away from this machine.
I hate getting into trouble on Fridays..

Just dropped by :  Clean up in progress.  Phone and internet in and out.  No 1 was designated as temporary emergency shelter.  Shelterees helped themselves to the contents of the Firehouse and left while crews were out on runs.  Can't make this stuff up.  As you can see from the news Sandy has left her sign on a few spots.  Gas in short supply right now and folks with gasoline powered generators are lining up.  One station with no power put a suction hose from a sump pump in the storage tank and was pumping gas with a 1/2 in discharge into the portable gas cans.   Wonder if operator has ever seen a a pump overheat.  Had a call  for a little old lady who was moved from one home to a neighbors.  Sitting on the range top was a one burner butane camp stove.   UGG.  We are in Squad bldg. 24/7.   Town is on lockdown.  If you are not a resident no access.  That's it for now. Catch you guys on the back step.

Yeah !
A little over 1/2" yesterday, and some nice sprinkles this morning again.
Funny how that big red blob just evaporated last evening.
On our way to town we were looking at the sky to the east and it was massive, with great colours bouncing off from the sunset. Thought we were Doomed for sure. But nothing happened....

Anyway, all's well.

Think I'm staying away from Doc's blog for a week or two.
Tired of all the GW fights, stupid political attacks, and Monday morning quarterbacking.

I said something about the NYC mayor not taking it serious enough after his first press conference before Sandy and was told I didn't know what I was talking about. Of course, now the same folks want to crucify him.

As for NHC...it's a mute point. Anyone who watched the news at all knew it was coming and what could happen. In fact, there were many accusing the media of over-hyping the storm.

The info was there for anyone who chose to believe it. The region had been too lucky for too long. No matter what you say or do, a percentage of people will ignore it or not believe it will happen to them or not believe it can be as bad as they say.

Could some things have been done better? Probably. Would it have made a difference? Maybe...maybe not.

Anyway, that's my take. Very weary of hearing about it so I'm staying here.

Ditto that.

From all the interviews the most said was 'I didn't think it would be this bad'

Well, it's getting to be mid morning and I've done nothing productive. Time to get going. Have a good morning!

Will check in later.
