Welcome to The Ark

Welcome!

Things that make you go Ooops!

Your favorite mistake.

Things you always knew to be true that turned out to be not so much.

Surprising realizations.

Funny historical stuff.

Stuff that scared you senseless but was funny afterwards.

Things learned the hard way.

Keep it clean, friendly, and have fun!

NY Harbor is a great port because it is protected by the adjacent land. Main channel is almost 55 ft at mllw on the pier head line. Ah but on the west side channel not so deep and shoals without dredging. Once upon a time great place for oysters and clams. Don't think Mike will see the big waves but Jersey City not so good. A pair of 4 story basements on the bulkhead line. First one is a safe built in the pre WW1 era. Second in 01, is a garage for BMW'S, 911T'S and Rolls.

I imagine there is a lot of truth in that last sentence. We think of the lives lost and the loved ones left behind, we think of the financial loss and the change to the landscape, but not so much the loss of knowledge and experience.

Good point.

I could take that a lot further...but, dat'l do.

Yeah, I was being nice.
Actually I wouldn't want to live in NYC at all, but that's a personal preference I guess. I like my wide open spaces.

In Dec 92, PATH was flooded out from effects of surge above el 6 msl '29. The water poured into the handicap access elevator and the 18 ft wide stairway from the Hoboken train terminal to the subway. Someone forgot to put the stop logs in place at the top of the stairs. They were working on the pumps so the automatic floats didn't kick in and bingo. That storm had a 8.7 ft level at the Battery gage and we had five ft of water or el 10 at the elevator. Be interesting to see who remembers. Lots of institutional knowledge lost on Sept 11.

Wave heights are building through Monday night.

Bloomberg is about to get an education in math.

8 plus 32 = 40

Edit:
Make that 11 plus 32 = 43

Think NYC will see rain wind and high tides. What was happening at the NHC one minute they were going to continue to monitor and report as if it was hurricane then someone reversed field said no the locals and NWS will handle and poof we are outta here. Bloomy says nothing to see here. If this thing gets its legs back Sun then we may see a different tune. Takes time to move a lot of people.

Had to clean the coffee off the screen after that one!

Glad to know Orca is okay. Waiting to hear from YCD.

Pottery, I saw something interesting about an eruption in Hawaii a couple days ago. Other than that, I don't know.

Mayor of NYC doesn't like supersized anything. He's about to get a lesson in supersized storms. Heard no evacuations because it's not gonna be a hurricane at landfall. That's just a technicality.

Stupid is as stupid does!

Any Volcanos yet this morning?
How about clouds? We could use some clouds. Or some breeze. We feeling kind of 'left out' down here, you know!

Yeah, 66 here and I'm sitting on the deck in sweats due to wind.
Big change in a week.

Forecast is 44 for Tues. night.
Of course, they said that with the last cold front to and it only hit 59. I usually add 11 degrees to the lows when the cold front comes through and it's usually pretty close.

I also add a little to the wind forecast because they are always too low.

Gonna drink my sleeping potion and take my benedryl. Should kick in right after the NHC update.

Feels good to be out from under the clouds. Moon is nice.

I'm looking at a possible low of 36F Monday night.
Ranger Myleghurts is looking at 32F.
:)

That is not the weather change I had in mind.

holly winds Batman.

Still honking here in the upper keys. Was on the bayside most of the afternoon at Mangrove marina facing the north. The parking lot was a lake all the storage sheds were flooded with about a ft of salt water. Tom called me mid morn and said he was going to the patches(oceanside) to fish and check our traps and do I want to go, I said nick off. (Hello it's blowing about 30 gusting to 40) Any who he went and checked our stone crab traps, got slapped going there from the bay to oceanside. Oceanside was in the lee somewhat, he ended up getting about 24 claws 12 of which were jumbos, me, I was watching a movie. I thought he was joking when he said he was going out. Kicked his azz so much he didn't fish (eye roll) :)

Anyway just ate some of the jumbos, click pop fizz slurp,

Expansion flag on.

Winds have increased.
Consistent 60 to 90 degrees on the spanish moss scale.
Bushels of the stuff on the ground on the lake side.

No float planes, wave runners, and only 1 boat on the lake today.

Blue horizon not getting any closer.

Silenced the wind chimes.

Time for a nap.

Apple Fritters were floating by in the air everywhere.

Never could reach up high enough though.

Woke up SugarBear too, that wasn't good. :)

69 Degrees F
Wind NW variable 20-25 mph gusting 30.

Beginning to calm down a little, but I was just checking bouys off Tampa and still blowing pretty good in the Gulf.

Man, this is one big circulation.

Beautiful cool morning here...a bit odd...but quite invigorating. Great day for yard work.

High fair weather clouds drifting slowly ...north?

Spanish Moss Wind Gauge shows light breeze from the...west...no,north...no,south? Eeesch-jay Sandy...make up your mind already.

Jet passing by overhead leaving a vapor trail that quickly degrades into little "apple fritter" looking thingies moving quickly...west?

After all it's only fair that we get a break around here from from any loop d'loop troublemaker like we had earlier this year. A cautious well wishing for the Carols and northward.

Edit:
If the apple fritters floating by don't wake up Ranger Myleghurts...nothing will.

Click pop fizz slurp,

Is that a real owl or plastic one.

Still windy, honking, got a flood warning for the north side of the keys. At the bayside where we have our fishing boat the water is pouring in, boats on a rack but we have a storage shed there. I just said to Tom to pick everything up off the floor. Thing is he doesn't take adivice from me.

OK ooops moment,

First time we went to pick up our stone crab traps I said to Tom (who has never seen a stone crab in his life) you have to grab the crab by both claws at the same time or you will get bit. He said %^&*(#$%^& so grabed one claw and the bugger came over with his other claw and pinched the hell out of his thumb, luckly he had a crappy lobby glove on so it got a fair bit of that (roles eyes) He is wide eyed and says hes got me. I just slapped that crap to the deck. Needless to say he grabs both claws at the same time now, live and learn

Well, the wind is coming around but I didn't count on a "dry squall", (misty stuff coming in sideways).

Thought it was smoke coming down the lake at first.

The owl looks a bit miffed!
