Welcome to The Ark

Welcome!

Things that make you go Ooops!

Your favorite mistake.

Things you always knew to be true that turned out to be not so much.

Surprising realizations.

Funny historical stuff.

Stuff that scared you senseless but was funny afterwards.

Things learned the hard way.

Keep it clean, friendly, and have fun!

(credit to Shep for the idea.)

Very erie reading back a couple of days with Bloomberg, when I heard him playing the storm down, I really didn't think I heard him right. He's now saying the subway will be up and running in 5 days, this dude needs a reality check. As for Christie I could hear him yelling for everyone to get out from down here.

Have been watching it live stream the last couple of days, unreal especially the beach areas.

Todd have you heard from your folks?

Anyway a very bad situation all around.

HI ARKERS - I'M BACK ON LINE - YEE HAW

Oh sure, pick on me when I'm not even here.

It is a lot of fun is it not? :)

Man, you don't realize how you depend on the net
until you are off line for 36 hours.

I'm going to have to buy an I-phone now so I can
still check in, this was nuts.

Seems a truck went off the road about two blocks
north of our neighborhood and took out one of those
big connection boxes of BellSouth's that housed all
the high speed internet connections in this area.

Came back on about an hour ago.

Glad to be back.

Crazy windy again here today.
Lake Wind advisory in effect.

Parts of the yard have as much spanish moss on the ground as grass!

Hey Pottery!
Thanks for the heads up, but your Caribbean thing is gonna have to go. I'm not in the mood for any more tropical mischief.

Good Afternoon, Arkites.

Was just looking at the images of the devastation all over the place.
Sandy was indeed a Very Nasty Chick.
I guess it's fortunate that the winds were not higher. Those fires would have spread much further.

In the meantime, the blob I was looking at in the Atl has gone away leaving little hope for any respite from this dry/heat.

But there is something in the Caribbean Sea that needs keeping an eye on, if you happen to be on the shores of the GOM or in Florida.

Just sayin'....

Good Morning!

53 degrees here at the moment.

Goofy, thanks for the update. I haven't seen any news since midnight so time to do some catching up.

You guys do an awesome job. I'm sure there are many who appreciate you being there last night.

Think most of the phone and power are out in Monmouth Co by the shore.  At the squad building we have the back up M-G set and fiber link to the Verizon central station in town for phone, internet and tv.   Winds from the south 20-30 kts pressure up to 980mb.  Last two rescues are gumby suits, boat and stokes basket, two at one location and three at another, both  in waste deep water.  Last one house was failing.

Spoke to RTLSNK tonight.
He was "fit to be tied".

Okay, for international readers who may not understand my colloquialisms:

Called up, SugarBear answered the phone. Spoke for a couple minutes, asked how they were doing.

"Well....about as well as can be expected." was the reply.
"As well as can be expected with a former Ranger huffing and puffing around the house in frustration?" I said.

Laughing on the phone "Yeah, something like that!"

A RTLSNK with no internet and no cable news is not a happy camper.

Anyhow, he said to tell you all "Hi" and was heading over to the daughters house to watch the weather channel.

For my part, I'm about newsed out for the day.

Take good care and God bless all in harms way.

-Hood Out.

Let's plan a week in the Keys.

You won't have to look over your shoulder.

...just watch where you step.

:)))

That would suit me real good.

Keeping in touch with developments up the East Coast there.
Flooding in the subway system and fires burning down there apparently, buildings going up in smoke.

BadAss Sandy.

Spring Lake NJ   Winds 30-45 backed from N to E, G<60,  Temp 60 F,   Seas confused 8-12  Ft  breakers. Numerous trees down, power and phone out.  At least 2 miles of new boardwalk  since Irene out to sea.   Responded to at least 30 reports of wires down hot wires on ground and flaming trees(1).  pressure dropped to 956 , now trending up.  Rain= 1.50 in since morning of the 28th.

Things learned the hard way.

When the Doctor Misplaced the Epidural Steroid Needle and my body jerked violently, He Said, "Oops, Too Far!"
And I ended up with Adhesive Arachnoiditis.
(Plainly Put...Non-Stop Pain for the Rest of My Life!)

And HE said "Oops?"

Yeah.
Scary stuff when they start poking around in the spine.
Sorry it went that way for you. I have a couple messed up vertebrae that are pretty painful occasionally, could probably be fixed with surgery. Don't want to take that risk.
I hurt pretty bad a couple days a month, but I'll take that over the risk from an Ooops!

Patti,
Thanks!
The loss of that ship is a shame.
Heard a little while ago from a CG spokesperson on the news that 2 crewmen were still missing, said to be in survival suits, the search still ongoing.

If you got a prayer list going... Prayers needed... Word has gone out that two are missing in the waters under Sandy..
I am praying for the crew of the Tall Ship HMS Bounty. It was caught in Hurricane Sandy off the North Carolina Outer Banks. Two crew members are missing while 14 others have been rescued by the Coast Guard.
Looks like somebody was thinking they could slide around the storm.. but not this big one.

November 13.
But we need to start the party early, you know.
The Refineries are filled with oil, and the Distilleries are filled with rum.
It would be Untraditional and Unseemly to have either money or rum left over, after any holiday.

Yae, though it is truly a Badge of Honor to be singled out for such misfeasance upon this pirate vessel, I would direct the Captain's uncertain attention to post# 228.

However, I the pigeon-chested Steward of lame fisherman and rescuer of recherche wenches in distress, proudly walk the plank alone and take with me to the depths of Davy Jones' Locker this tattered, bejeweled, haunting copy of my favorite Siren's tune as coins for the ferryman.

2nd day in a row I tried to nap and failed.
Today 95 lbs of dog decided to leap up on the bed and make sure I was okay. His stomping around made me think RTLSNK was leaping for fritters in my house.

And what's a Prius anyway?

In the meantime.....

A large area of cloudy stuff is coming this way, out in the Mid-Atl.
I will be sprinkling a variety of potents upon the parched ground, lighting weird candles, performing copius contortions and generally encouraging this bunch of clouds to come this way.....

Not me, No Siree.

Spent the day re-organising my work-shed.....
And it's 94F again today, so I had to drink a couple beers to prevent dehydration, which meant that my tools were never where I thought they were and the nails kept jumping around exposing my finger to the hammer-blows of life while there were calls from a higher authority to perform complex tasks like moving a barrel of clay which weighs 1000 tons and helping offer up a newly made lamp-shade on a beam 12' up while balancing on a chair which is on the table. (you dont need to know, trust me...)

So, no newspapers.....

It's now a lovely evening, so all is well.
Except in NY where 370,000 people are being evacuated as the transit system shuts down. Way to go, Mr. Mayor !

Really appreciate the info Goofy.

A lot here depends on the exact track. We won't really have a good handle on that until after Sandy makes the turn. 50 miles makes a huge difference on surge. Wind damage will affect a large area though.

NY Harbor is a great port because it is protected by the adjacent land. Main channel is almost 55 ft at mllw on the pier head line. Ah but on the west side channel not so deep and shoals without dredging. Once upon a time great place for oysters and clams. Don't think Mike will see the big waves but Jersey City not so good. A pair of 4 story basements on the bulkhead line. First one is a safe built in the pre WW1 era. Second in 01, is a garage for BMW'S, 911T'S and Rolls.
