Strange Stuff

Was just reading an AP article about a study of the effects of increased levels of CO2 in sea water upon fish.

They increased the CO2 levels of the seawater to 3.5 times current levels and incubated the eggs of white sea bass. The fish ended up developing ear bones 7 percent to 9 percent larger than normal when measured at 7 to 8 days old.

Fish ears are internal structures, but it is thought that they play an important role in balance, movement, and position sensing, just as they do in humans.

Quoting the Article:
"There are anecdotal observations that fish in higher concentrations of CO2 seem to be lethargic, he added, but that needs confirmation."

Well...Duh! Imagine...high CO2 levels making animals lethargic...yeah, I think we need to run a scientific study to be sure about that...or, maybe we could just ask a fish farmer or Koi pond owner!

Hey Orca! Is this pretty much a given or what?

Okay everybody, get out your crayons...nice clean blog to play in!

Birthday Angel

By: RobDaHood, 8:35 AM GMT on June 27, 2009

Happy Birthday Angela!

Today is Angie's Birthday!
For those who do not know...this is the Captain's Lady.
I met and dated a whole lot of girls before I found her. Funny how you find the best things in life as soon as you stop looking for them. That is the case with Angie. We met nearly 15 years ago, and she is every bit as lovely now as she was then. She truly has a heart of gold, she's smart, she's fun, and she puts up with me. We are different in a lot of ways, but agree on everything that is really important. An added bonus...she likes things that are loud and fast. All I have to do is say jet boat, airboat, really any kind of boat, swampbuggy, 4-wheeler, racecar, or motorcycle and she's ready to go. My friends are all envious as their ladies would rather go shopping.
She loves animals and nature, she's wonderful with children, helpful to my family, takes pride in her work, she's an all around wonderful person and a good friend.

I can't begin to tell you all the reasons I have to love her, but I can tell you that I am always proud to have her at my side.

Happy Birthday Baby!

Happy Father's Day

By: RobDaHood, 8:37 AM GMT on June 21, 2009

Happy Father's Day!

Dad's are such an important part of our lives. I am so fortunate to have a great one. He taught me many things, way to many to list. Perhaps the most important.

How to treat women with love and respect
How to love your children
How to be a leader and stand up for what is right
How to help and protect those who cannot do for themselves
Taught me about faith, about love for God and Country
That pride must be tempered with humility
That true happiness comes from bringing smiles to others
That the best gift you can give someone is your time
That Might does not always make right
That Money can't buy happiness
That the best things in life are free and chief among those are friends and family
What it means to be a man

So many other things, it would take me days to list them, but suffice it to say, I was blessed with great parents.

Fathers, by example, teach boys how to treat females and teach girls how they should expect to be treated. Those are two of the most important lessons you, as a father will ever teach and you will never realize you are doing it. They learn from your example.

I once ran a mechanic shop for an agricultural company. The owner's son worked for me. After hours I would help him restoring an old Camaro his father had bought for him. One day while we were working, he told me "I really appreciate you helping and teaching me, but I really wish I was doing this with my dad." We chatted for a while on the topic, and he told me "My dad works hard and makes money to buy us all really nice things, like this car and my new truck, but I would trade that if he had just spent more time throwing a ball with me."

So, remember...the best gift you can give to your children (and grandchildren) is your time. That time goes by fast, so next chance you get, go out an throw a ball.

Wishing all you great dads the best Father's Day ever!

Now for other business:
Pyrate Party on Surfy's Blog tonight!
Bring your costume, a pirate image, or just your smile and sense of humor!

Today is the Portlight.org Houston Pirate Party!
Imagine attending a showing of Pyrates of Penzance, produced by none other than our very own EmmyRose, followed by a Pyrate Party, hosted by Sarah and Emmy! Sounds like a great time to me...so click here for ticket information.
