Summer, I am glad you are going before me as I can find my way to Elko - and if you will just drop a cookie now and then, I will be able to find my way to JACKSON!
Hmm, I might go via Elko too Duane, and then we can both go together from there.   You drive and I'll look for those cookies!
We'll get there!

Smiling and excited about the fall colors. P.S. The photo contest ended yesterday and I submitted the only photo to"Judge Duane".... i'll be keeping my hat!

Yup - Looks like that big "Egg Scrambler" in cyberspace got a hold of WU system.

We will miss you Dorothy but you know there are a lot of people that make things out of clouds - could be some of those taller ones are the Tetons

Almost time to think about getting ready - 5 days before we leave.

Hi Willow, I only found it because you added it to your blog. Same thing happened to my photos last night. They were approved but never were actually placed in the gallery. I finally deleted all of them this am and just uploaded one to see if it went in the gallery. So perhaps you need to delete them and upload again. Think something was going on with WU last night late. I, too, am still looking fwd to hearing all about the gathering that is to happen very soon.

Happy Autumn!!! Thinking of y'all and looking forward to seeing your marvelous photographs!! John and I celebrated our 43rd autumnal equinox/wedding anniversary in the Virgin Islands. We have just returned, so our travel budget is now depleted. We'll miss being in the Tetons! Here's a video I took of the sunrise on the first day of Autumn. I took some photos and posted them in the current weather gallery, but they seem to be missing, except the one WeatherWise found. :) Thank You, Shirley!!

It is with the saddest regrets that I had to finally throw in the towel and cancel. This was going to be my dream trip, but dang if life didn't just get in the way one more time. So anybody looking for a great room (bet I gave up the best one since I booked last October-lol), if it hasn't been snatched up already, one is free! Sorry about the barn challenge Carl - you and the Tetons are on my bucket list. :)

I will miss all the people I have met at the last two meetups, and those I was hoping to meet in person this time. You all have a blast-I will try to look at the pictures without tears in my eye.

For the best view at Schwabacher go to the end of the road and hike a quarter of a mile upstream (North)! Also a drive to the top of Signal Mountain gives a beautiful view of the valley and Bull Elk can be seen and heard bugling at sunrise and sunset! Moose can be seen on the Moose- Wilson road a.m and p.m.! Slide Lake is also a beautiful photo op!

Oh, If anyone is interested in hanging around Jackson until Wednesday - there will be a total lunar eclipse. Probably a better look at it than usual since you will be at an altitude of over 6000 ft - Won't need as much zoom.........

Arrive in Jackson Hole!!
Twilight: 6:53 am; Sunrise: 7:21am; Sunset: 7:02pm

Welcome to Jackson Hole!!! Arrive and settle in your beautiful hotel room. This itinerary highlights some of the best places in the park to photograph and can be used as self-guided or catch up with fellow WU photographers at specific times and places listed. Refer to the map for Map Stop locations.

Highlights for the Day: Afternoon classic barn shoot and dinner for those in town early enough.

Photo Shoot: Teton Barns

When: 4 pm
Where: Map Stop #1 at the barns on Mormon Row. Antelope Flats Turnoff located on the right about 13 mi. north of Jackson off Hwy 89. Photo Shoot: Classic Mormon Row/ Moulton Barns with CameraDiva and Funhawg: A perfect way to start your trip with a late afternoon light photo shoot of the classic barns against the iconic Teton background. Located along Antelope Flats Road and Mormon Row, the barns were owned by the homesteading Moulton family. Don%u2019t worry if you%u2019re still in route and miss this photo op today as you%u2019ll have another chance Saturday morning. The barns are spectacular in any type of light or weather.

Catch a Sunrise
Twilight: 6:53am; Sunrise: 7:21am; Sunset: 7:04pm Catch a Sunrise-on your own
For early morning risers, catch a beautiful sunrise anywhere in the park. The colors are especially beautiful near water or highlighted aspens. Watching the sunrise on the peaks at Jenny Lake will be a favorite. At sunrise the mountains glow orange and reflect in the glassy mirror-like waters, so vast that it%u2019s hard to capture even with a wide-angle lens.

Photo Shoot:
Oxbow Bend
When: 9:30 am
Where: Map Stop #2. Turnout located about 33 mi. north of Jackson on Hwy 89 %u2013a 45 min. drive from Jackson w/o stops, but you%u2019ll want to stop!!
Oxbow Bend Photo Shoot with CameraDiva and Funhawg
Meet at Oxbow Bend to see breathtakingly beautiful aspen, pine and mountain reflections of Mt. Moran on the Snake River. Early morning is the best time to capture the glassy reflections of the Snake River where flows in an oxbow. Some choose to shoot from the parking lot while others will hike through the willows down to the water%u2019s edge. Be considerate as this is a photographer%u2019s haven and they%u2019re known to shoot! The famous golden hues of the Oxbow Bend aspen attract hundreds of photographers in early October. Oxbow Bend is the "Old Faithful" of Teton fall color.

Genny Lake loop
When & Where: Map Stop #3. After leaving Oxbow Bend, take the Jackson Lake Junction and head south to North Jenny Lake Junction. Travel the one-way loop road.
Genny Lake loop -on your own
Beautiful forest and lake reflections and majestic peaks of the Teton Range. Along the way, Cathedral Group Turnout is a great spot to stop and enjoy the expansive views. Finish the loop by continuing to head south to the town of Moose where you can visit the Visitors Center, photograph the Snake River and you may even see moose lounging under the bridge next to the river.

Lunch Lunch-On your own
Photo Shoot: Wildlife & Affectionate Horses
When: 1:30 pm
Where: Map Stop #4. Meet up at the intersection of Hwy 89 at the Gros Ventre Junction, located about 6 mi. north of Jackson.

Wildlife & Affectionate Horses Gros Ventres Photo Shoot with Funhawg
Funhawg will lead CameraDiva and others on a driving tour in search of wooly beasts and critters. The Grand Teton Park buffalo herd is most often found in the area between Cunningham%u2019s cabin, antelope flats, and the town of Kelly as they wander in search of forage. Along the Gros Ventres River from Gros Ventres junction all the way east to Slide Lake is excellent moose habitat-one of the best spots is the Gros Ventres campground. Wildlife are most active in the hours just after sunrise and just before sunset. Moose and buffalo can be dangerous and kill many more tourists than grizzly bears. Keep your distance!!

Dinner- WU Gathering Kickoff!!

When: No Host Happy Hour starting at 6:30pm, Pizza Party at 7:30pm Where: Pizza Artisan ~ 690 S Hwy 89 (also known as West Broadway Street and just a 5 minute walk south of the Hampton Inn), Jackson, Wy Phone: 307-734-1970

Saturday, October 04, 2014
Catch a Sunrise
Twilight: 6:55 am; Sunrise: 7:24am; Sunset: 7:00pm Catch a Sunrise -on your own
For early morning risers, catch a beautiful sunrise anywhere in the park. The colors are especially beautiful near water or highlighted aspens. Watching the sunrise on the peaks at Jenny Lake will be one of your favorite memories. At sunrise the mountains glow orange and reflect in the glassy mirror-like waters, so vast that it%u2019s hard to capture even with a wide-angle lens.
Photo Shoot: Mormon Row Barns
When: 8:30 am
Where: Map Stop #1 at the barns on Mormon Row. Antelope Flats Turnoff located on the right about 13 mi. north of Jackson off Hwy 89.
Morning Photo Shoot of the barns (Mormon row) with CameraDiva and Funhawg:
Sunrise to mid morning is another perfect time for the classic barn shots against the Tetons. The sun highlights the old wood and drapes across the landscape. Shoot hight and low and figure out your perfect angle to capture the barns.

Blacktail Ponds Overlook
When and Where: Map Stop #5. After leaving the barns, head north on Hwy 89 and take the next turnout on the left, just past Antelope Flats Road.
Blacktail Ponds Overlook-on your own
Breath-taking scenic view of the Snake River and Tetons.

Glacier View Turnout When and Where: Map Stop #6. After leaving Blacktail ponds overlook, drive north 2 miles on Hwy 89 to Glacier View Turnout on the left side.
Glacier View Turnout- on your own
Majestic Teton views and spectacular shots.

Photo Shoot: Schwabachers Landing Wild and Crazy Nature Walk
When: 11:00 am
Where: Map Stop #7 From Glacier view turnout, travel north about mile on Hwy 89 and take the road on left that leads down to Schwabachers Landing. Located about 16 miles from Jackson.
Schwabachers Landing Wild and Crazy Nature Walk with Funhawg and CameraDiva
Enjoy a nature walk along the Snake River with incredible tree and mountain reflections with beaver dams and wildlife sightings. This is easily one of the most popular spots for photographers to capture the dramatic Tetons with classic water reflections in the foreground. Bison and moose frequent the marshy area. The beaver ponds create the classic mirror shot of the Tetons and golden glow of fall colors.

Snake River Overlook When and Where: Map Stop #8 After Schwabachers landing , head north to the Snake River Overlook made famous by Ansel Adams.
Snake River Overlook %u2013 on your own
Ansel Adams took his famous photo in late afternoon just before sunset, as the sun was about to drop behind the Grand Teton. Ansel used clouds to balance out the exposure and lots of darkroom printing to bring out the details in the sky and the mountains. It is very difficult to find the clouds in just the right position to make that shot work. Depending on the clouds, this overlook can be photographed beautifully all day and remains one of the iconic views of the Tetons.

Lunch Lunch- Lunch on your own. Suggestion: Jackson Lake Lodge: John D. Rockefeller financed the building of Jackson Lake Lodge and required that televisions wouldn't be placed in the rooms. You%u2019ll see why once you see the breathtaking beauty out on the back deck. Nearby willows provide an opportunity to spot moose and elk.

Afternoon: Park Touring on your own and/or

Photo Shoot
: Shop & Shoot
When: 3:00 pm
Where: Map Stop #9 Meet at the Jackson Town Square on E. Broadway in the heart of Jackson Hole.
Park touring on your own and/or:

Shoot & Shop Jackson Hole Walk-About with CameraDiva
CameraDiva, well-known for her shopping and shooting skills, will be leading a walk-about around Jackson Hole for some intriguing town shots and shopping.

Dinner: WU Gathering
When: No Host Happy Hour starting at 6:30pm, Dinner seating at 7:30pm, Dinner at 8:00pm
Where: Nani%u2019s Ristorante-Italian Cuisine~ 242 N Glenwood Street, Jackson Wy Phone: (307) 733-3888

Safe Travels and Happy Shooting Always!!

Take a Day trip to the North to Yellowstone National Park or travel home
Visit Yellowstone on your own or travel home. Yellowstone is an easy all day trip from Jackson Hole. The west side of Yellowstone has most of the major park features including Old Faithful and spectacular colors and displays of hot springs accessed along easy boardwalks. Wildlife is more prominent on the east side of the park.

Temps in Yellowstone the last week in August were highs around 48-52 and some of the campgrounds reported freezing or close to freezing over night temperatures .. a 3 season jacket that the liner can be taken out was comfortable at those temps in the sun but if in the shade and the wind blowing you needed gloves and a hat with the jacket and liner ..

we saw women mostly that were in shorts and you could tell they weren't enjoying themselves very much .. so dress warmly in layers you can remove or add as the weather warrants .. one stop may be very cold while another just a few miles away would be much warmer .. elevation makes a huge difference !!
