Here is the Whole Scoop! Play by Play - almost!

Greetings!

The planning committee of Duane Foss (RenoSoHill), Kristina Rinell (KristinaRinell), Rich Watson (Quickeye) and Lori Quillen (SVLover) are pleased to announce the schedule of events and procedures for signing up for the Wunderground Photographers Gold Beach meet up activities. If you have any questions please leave a note here on the blog or contact any of the planning committee members by WU email. Please leave your information here on the blog about your arrival times and length of stay so we can keep our records up to date. Thank you!

The Gathering at Gold Beach

The gathering will be held the weekend of September 14-15-16 in Gold Beach Oregon. Headquarters for the event will be located at the Gold beach Resort. If you plan to stay here and haven’t yet made your reservations, you need to do so immediately. The discounted rate of $107.10 tax/night will expire after July 31st. Don’t forget to mention Wunderground Photographers so you will get the discounted rate. You can reach the reservations desk at 1-800-541-0947. Check out the web site at Gold Beach Resort! Every room has an ocean view and free WIFI!

Members of the Wunderground staff have expressed interest in participating and attending our event! We will let you know more about that as events unfold.

Friday

Check in at Gold Beach Resort (after 2:00pm) an activity board will be set up in the hotel lobby to inform you all of when and where to meet.

Friday Night Casual Pizza
BYOP(izza)
Come and get acquainted with all your Wunderfriends over a slice of delicious pizza! Then get ready as we head south for the beautiful Pistol River sunset shoot with its iconic monolithic rocks. This rugged view of the Oregon coast can’t be missed! You can see more of the area at: Pistol River.
Sunset time: 7:28pm.

Saturday Morning
6:30am-10:00am, and included in your stay at the Gold Beach Resort, is a HOT BREAKFAST featuring fresh Scrambled Eggs, Belgium Waffles, Biscuits and Sausage Gravy, Bagels and cream cheese, English Muffins, assorted breads, Oatmeal, various cold cereals, fresh fruits and many other breakfast essentials!

Sunrise photo excursion to the Jetty and beautiful Rogue River Bridge!
Sunrise time: 6:58am

Now get ready…this is where the day really takes off in a BIG way!! Jerry’s Rogue River Jet Boat ride!
Take a 64 mile excursion up the Wild and Scenic Rogue River. Wildlife and gorgeous scenery is abundant! Our goal is to fill the boat with our group so that we have total control on where and when to stop for those perfect photo ops. This trip will also be the tame version – no white water, so people concerned with health issues or potential soggy camera equipment need not worry! Cost for this trip is $40.00 each. To keep things as simple as possible and avoid those annoying sign up lines, we have arranged for you to send your checks by mail to Rich.

Rich (Quickeye) lives in Gold Beach and has been instrumental in helping us with photo hotspots, and organizing the jet boat trip and BBQ – right down to which pilot and BBQ wagon we should use! A lunch stop will be provided on the boat trip, with ‘order from the menu’ selections. Lunch is not included in the price of the trip. Boat departs at 9:30am.
Deadline for boat sign up is September 1st.
Check out: Jerry's Rogue Jets for more on the boat ride! Don’t miss this one!!

Saturday Afternoon

At approximately 4:30pm a catered barbecue will commence in the Gold Beach Resort Parking area! If you haven’t seen a picture of this BBQ wagon yet, check it out on Duane’s blog! This meal includes BBQ Chicken, Three Bean Salad, Pasta Salad, Dinner Rolls, fresh Corn on the Cobb and dessert! Bottled water will be provided, BYOB if desired. The cost for the BBQ is $25.00ea, and you will pay for the meal at the BBQ site. We have a conference room reserved so we can all eat together inside.

Saturday Night
Not tired yet?? Great! Because it’s now time for the Saturday evening sunset photo op. This time we will be heading north to Otter Point. This location has great views from the bluffs overlooking the beautiful Pacific Ocean, providing the perfect backdrop for the sunset. Sunset time: 7:26pm.

Sunday Morning
6:30-10:00am Repeat of breakfast if staying at the Gold Beach Resort.

Sunrise photo shoot…this time up the Rogue River with our resident guide, Rich Watson! Rich will share some of his favorite hot spots for shooting those great wildlife shots he is famous for getting! The Rogue River is not to be missed!
Sunrise time 6:59am.

There will be plenty of time to wander the area to find the perfect spots for the type of photography you enjoy most, and to try new and exciting opportunities to stretch your photographic muscles! Rich will be available Friday through Monday to help point you in the right direction for those staying longer.

Here is a copy of the tide tables for September 14th-16th to help you plan your photo ops:

We are beyond excited to be able to meet so many of you in person and to share our passion of photography with one another. Thank you all for making the effort to be a part of the 1st annual West Coast gathering!

Only 4 days to go! Looks like it will be a grand event! Though I sure hope we have the name tags that have both the handles, names, and portrait photo! With the number of people showing up and as bad as I am with names, I'll need it.

Well, I can't confirm just yet, but I may just come down as my Brother-in-law lives in Gold Beach. He is a Preacher there and a River Guide. I've been to Gold Beach maybe a 100 times in my lifetime. The 60 mile drive from Brookings to Port Orford is some of the Prettiest Scenery you'll see in the world. Gold Beach is right in the middle of that route. I grew up on the Rouge River before moving to Tacoma, WA 14 years ago.

When I can confirm, I'll post.

I've been reading about the tidal pools at low tide and what I can determine, it looks like we may be having low tides at sunrise and sunset the weekend our shoot is! That could be interesting! I was not sure which inlet or area to use when using the Salt Tide Tables, so someone who is familiar might want to check it out for sure by using this link:

Our plans are to fly into Eugene on Thursday, arriving close to midnight, stay overnight there, and rent a car from there for the drive over to Gold Beach on Friday the 14th. Keep us in the loop as to when everyone is arriving and what our first rendezvous point will be!

Wow! Last time I looked for you, Reno, there was just Fishless's place. Now you've taken the bull by the horns and planned out a really great gathering and the best time of year to get good weather.

You'll have a terrific time at one of my all-time favorite places. I won't be able to join you, but I'll expect to see a whole bunch of photos and stories coming out of this gathering.

And don't forget to head south just a bit and check out the redwoods.

Wow, we have been showing at an art fair all weekend and just got into the blog here to see what's happening! Looks like we are going to have a great meet-up shoot-up in Oregon!!
We just made a reservation at the Gold Beach Hotel for the 14th, 15th, and 16th!
We are still researching flights and see one now from Atlanta (we will be in NC in Sept and have to drive to Atlanta 2 hours one-way to catch a flight from there) going into Eugene. It is just under $500. That is just a bit cheaper than a few days ago. We will be renting a car so we have to check out the routes, unless Meford opens up for tic prices.
I am going to research Medford again. The tics were over $600 each last I looked. The flights into Eureka,CA were more expensive than into Eugene. We are going to have to fly in on Thursday since the flights arrive so late and catch a hotel near the airport so we can drive out to Gold Beach on Friday.
BTW, our show went very well this weekend and Dave said, Well, that's money for our plane tics to Oregon! Woo-hoo!
Celebrating life, Debra
P.S. Just wanted to add my email address again and my cell phone number!

Yea, we looked too and it would be about a 7 to 8 hour drive...too far...
Anyway, the flights cost only $70 each less although they are non-stop. That $140 savings is not enough to warrant a whole day in the car...
I am going to look up Portland now!

Ok, looked it up and it costs around $430 each with 2 stops so that is a little bit less but again, not enough to warrant 5 or 6 hours driving...

Looks like the best bet is still coming into Eugene...
Maybe we have some airline miles to use but we are going to use most of them I think for a cycling trip this summer to France. Hmmm....

Not sure where you're traveling from trigirl.

Neat you all are getting together. Just wanted to throw a couple 2cents in here, fwiw. Have more than a few road trips under my belt in N California and along the 101 in CA, WA and OR. Also have traveled the entire Columbia River where it borders WA/OR.

There are only two places I'm aware of where the crossover from I-5 to 101 is not winding, slow speed travel. Your two best bets, imo...

You could fly into Sacramento and up drive up I5 to Redding, then out to the coast. Very do-able. Only about 8 miles of Hwy 299 west of Redding is winding with some drop-offs. Too long a drive, maybe. You might also fly into Redding. You might also want to look into flights to Eureka/Arcata, CA out Sacramento or SF. Other than Redding, that would be the hub for N CA. You might find airfares there meet or beat flying into Eugene or Redding - and you'll not have such a long drive to Gold Beach.

Flying into Portland or Eugene... I think the best (as in quickest and easiest to drive) way to go from Portland would be down the I5 to Eugene, then west. Eugene to Florence, OR. To see the Columbia River Gorge, you'd have to drive quite a ways east from Portland. The scenery west along the Columbia to the coast is nice, especially on the WA side but going that way from Portland will take longer - like hours longer.
:)

Ps. @HarveyCreek
Yamhill and the drive down the Willamette Valley to Eugene is beautiful country!

It is just so amazing.  I have done both this trip and Hell's Gate out of Grant's Pass.  This one by far had more wildlife opportunities and I liked the scenery better too.
The Gran't Pass one has the most amazing lodge at the end for lunch or dinner depending on the trip, and the food was included in the price of the ride.
I still would take this one any day of the week.  Glad you guys are excited and your wife too, Harvey!

Similar to Bluesmaster experience, I mentioned the Rouge River jet boats to my wife, and wow, she's gone from this looking like a nice beach trip, to anxious anticipation!
She has always talked about a mail boat ride up one of the Southern Oregon rivers she took about decade before we met. Come to find out, this was it and she definitely wants to repeat it!
