MARCH COMES IN LIKE A LION, AND GOES OUT LIKE A LAMB

March definitely marched in roaring, ripping, pummeling, clobbering, tearing, freezing the East Coast. Will it leave like a lamb? Who knows? Another storm is expected this coming Monday!

"O thou,
Who chariotest to their dark wintry bed
The winged seeds, where they lie cold and low,
Each like a corpse within its grave, until
Thine azure sister of the spring shall blow
Her clarion o'er the dreaming earth."
- John Davies, 1570-1626, Ode to the West Wind

In the bleak midwinter Frosty wind made moan, Earth stood hard as iron, Water like a stone; Snow had fallen, snow on snow, Snow on snow, In the bleak midwinter, Long ago.
Christina Rossetti

This snow scene is a tiny section of my Memory Garden - Serenity Garden. The statue represents St. Anthony, one of my mom’s favorite Saints. Although the Garden was started in honor of my mother, it is now also in memory of my brother who was plucked from this earth by a cruel and vicious ‘fate’.

"Sweet bird! thy bow'r is ever green,
Thy sky is ever clear;
thou hast no sorrow in thy song,
No winter in thy year."
- John Logan, 1748 – 1788

MARCH

Goethe, 1817

The snow-flakes fall in showers,
The time is absent still,
When all Spring’s beauteous flowers,
When all Spring’s beauteous flowers
Our hearts with joy shall fill.
With lustre false and fleeting
The sun’s bright rays are thrown;
The swallow’s self is cheating:
The swallow’s self is cheating,
And why? He comes alone!
Can I e’er feel delighted
Alone, though Spring is near?
Yet when we are united,
Yet when we are united,
The Summer will be here.

This blog post started out as 'March Unpredictability' but it turned into 'Visiting Hungry Birds' and ‘A Collage of Whatever Strikes My Fancy (and yours I hope)’.

WW, beautiful birds and their photo. Congratulations on the AC for the Cardinal photo. Well merited.

GG
, superb photo and comment. Did you take this photo? Congratulations on that beautiful photo of the Kingfisher and her catch!

Mike
, halleluiah!

Ylee
, we enjoy a day or a few hours of a day and then we are back to the cold temperatures, no sun, and snow in the making. Crazy weather in my area. And the tree pollens are killing some of us!

Sandi, Mimi is back to her naughty self! I have taken off the collar, her incision is healed and the poor thing was going insane. We are back at taking our morning walks. As to the procedure helping to calm her down, well, Mimi doesn't know the meaning of calming down!

Ozgala
, please see the comment for Sandi about Mimi. As to snow, it is coming again. Two inches or so is what they expect. The ups and downs of Spring in Virginia!

Kat
, thank you about the comments on the photos. I hope life is treating you well. Is Spring behaving up your way?

BC
, how is your cat doing? Did the dentist treat him well? We used to take Mimi to the dentist every February (ten percent off month). She too was put under anesthesia and it was an all day event for the poor doggie. But we do what we must to keep our pets healthy. How is Spring doing your way? Have you been out taking photos? I do not look at all of the Gallery, I admit it! I basically see flowers and birds. So I do not always recognize the authors of the photos from the thumbprints.

Hi Jus. Hopefully the weather has settled down in your area. I need to come and take a peek at your blog. I have my fingers into too many little projects and I just do not get around the blogs as much as I would like, but I do think of my WU buddies.

I hope that I did not miss anyone's comment. And yes, it took me a long long time to acknowledge your comments. I am a bad old lady!

Hope the snow is going and Mimi is beginning to feel a little better.

How long does she have to keep on the collar? I suppose as long as the stitches are still in?

About to go to the chemist to pick up some "First Defence" - I awoke with a sore throat so need to "kill" it before it takes hold!

Now Thursday .... hope you and Mimi are OK, I have picked up a head cold! Oh, yuck:(

Going into town to drop off C at a seminar, I might have a wander around the shops. It is always much quieter during the week, when the kids are in school!

Love the Mimi-collage!

What's with all the snow? In your area spring should be in full bloom by now, shouldn't it? Sorry, that's probably a sore subject.

I need to take one of my cats, Ken, to the vet on Wednesday to have his teeth cleaned. It will be an all-day event, taking him there at 8:00am and picking him up after 4:00pm. Full sedation with an IV hooked up just in case (a standard precaution for cats over 10 years old). He won't have to wear a collar, but he will be woozy and have a sore mouth.

I do wish there was some way to communicate with our little fur-babies. Imagine what it must be like to have sedation and feel poorly afterward without a clue about what's going on? It must be scary. Give brave little Mimi a puppy hug for me!

@Maria photo 20140317_1056_edited-1framed_zpsf36d7a9a.jpg

Today we woke up to eight inches of snow, it clung to every branch, covered the few spring flowers that dared to bloom yesterday, frustrated Mimi who wants to be in the snow to play, gave me the opportunity to enjoy the winter wonderland and to take lots of photos.

Happy St. Patrick's Day WatchingTheSky, Sandi, WeatherWise, GardenGirl, Ylee, et alia. Thank you for your wishes.

Mimi @Maria photo PicMonkeyCollagef_zpsfb210830.jpg

Mimi in the morning.
Mimi on her first outing outside, picking up sticks to chew.
Mimi looking for human food cooking on the stove.
Mimi at her favorite activity, pulling on my and my husband%u2019s clothes.
Mimi chewing on a stole glove.
Mimi in late afternoon, letting me know what she thinks of my photo taking.
Mimi resting to gather energy for the next phase of her daily romping.

One of my favorite songs from The Sound of Music is 'How do you solve a problem like Maria?' Below are the lyrics from some of the stanzas of this song. I have substituted Mimi for 'Maria'and puppy for 'child' and 'girl'.

How do you solve a problem like Mimi?

When I'm with her I'm confused
Out of focus and bemused
And I never know exactly where I am
Unpredictable as weather
She's as flighty as a feather
She's a darling! She's a demon! She's a lamb!

She'd outpester any pest
Drive a hornet from its nest
She could throw a whirling dervish out of whirl
She is gentle! She is wild!
She's a riddle! She's a puppy!
She's a headache! She's an angel!
She's a puppy!

Oh, how do you solve a problem like Mimi?
How do you hold a moonbeam in your hand?

We have spayed/neutered over 40 colony cats now (I think we have a couple more that have appeared on the scene currently that we need to do next but otherwise I think we have finally stabilized the population, keeping my fingers crossed, lol.) We keep them in their cages overnight to let the anesthesia wear off and release them back into the colony the following morning after surgery. I am always amazed at how well they handle it and recover so fast. One of the last kittens did give me a bit of scare last time as it was having trouble waking back up. Had to rub it to keep it warm and kept that one inside the house for awhile. She is very healthy and active now.

Dear Pros, I'm so sorry I didn't get by to offer you support while your baby had surgery. They are our babies!

I would have said the same thing; it just takes a good 24 hours for the anesthesia to wear off (sometimes, a little more) and you'd just have to let things take their course. They get back to their normal selves before long.

I think my vet kept my dogs/cats overnight, after being spayed.

Neutering? It was usually done in the morning and I picked them up late that afternoon. They'd be 'drunk' but by the next day, back to normal.

You keep that collar on Mimi as long as the vet told you. You do not want her nipping and tugging at those stitches. If she wants to pitch a fit about it, fine. It's for her own good. Don't let her 'guilt' you into taking it off too soon.

Smell something coming from the kitchen. Best check my dinner on the stove!

HI NW, I finally got on WU. Thank you for letting me know that others had problems too.
The last Cardinal photo, that I saw anyways, is really beautiful.
Is there a snow watch/warning in your area? Here yes, starting tomorrow night and ending Monday afternoon. Joy, joy!

Hi Sandi. YOU are probably busy with the little shootaboot project. Looking forward to it. I may not put one up as I have not had a chance to get away from the house. Hubby went to play golf today and I will not leave Mimi alone for now. I have taken photos around the yard but who would be interested in dull non-trips.... I'll see what happens tomorrow...

BC, thank you for your nice words about #8. Mimi has her quiet moments but for the most part the poor thing is going wild with despair over the collar. I took it off for a second to test her reaction and she immediately and avidly went to the incision. You can imagine the 'fight' I had to wage in order to get the collar back on. She really is a willful young lady and besides she must be in a lot of discomfort.

Hi YLee, yes, Mimi is taking everything about her surgery alternately with anger and passivity. I need to visit the cams and see if anything pleasant is happening in other parts of the world. Besides Mimi and her issues, I have been playing on Ancestry.com and so have been using up my free time.

Hi Calpoppy, good advise. It is so good to hear from people who have been through this experience before. Mimi is my second dog and I have not had much experience with dogs. Cats, I am more familiar with. I have had cats since I was a little girl until a few years back. Now my hubby won't let me get a kittie. I do not understand why since he likes cats, so I thought.
I suppose you are busy on the second chapter....

I have a few photos of Mimi that I took today. The collar is not shown, just her little nose and eyes. I'll come back with one or two photos.

Don't worry. Mimi will be fine and, in fact, it's good that she is lying around. The last thing you want is for her to be frisking about and tear something loose before it heals!

I have enjoyed the stories and photos of Dixie Rose and Max.

More than that, I love the painting in #8!!! How could anyone be sad and blue in a room where that was hanging on the wall?

How are things? Hope she is recovering, and feeling a little more perky.

It must have been such a stressful night for you, so I hope you managed to settle down to a nap or two during the day.

Remember the 'M&M Show'? Well, whilst one member of the show was recovering from an op, the other member was making his "fortune"!

The photo I took of Max the other day went into Explore. In eight years of being with Flickr I have never had a day like it. Max's photo made it into the top 10 photos for today, which resulted in over 26,500 views to my photos!!! Many of the other photos of him have been revisited and I, personally, have had 65 new followers link with me today! Such excitement. Something to tell Mimi about when she is well enough to listen! lol

Glad she is better! You will be surprised how fast she recovers!!! There might be some reddening around the incision area and Mimi will most likely be licking the area. Don't let her! Just watch for any oozing out of the incision. I have had many dogs, mostly female and never had an infection in the incision area. Try to keep her from running, which is very hard to do when they are puppies and are feeling so much better, LOL!

Take care Pros and Mimi!!!

What am awful experience for you.....but I am glad that there seems to be light at the end of the tunnel, and Mimi is now beginning to eat and drink a little. As I said, she will be feeling much better by the weekend :-)
I had lunch with a friend who has a spaniel called Bess. She told me Bess was out, comatose, for 24 hours and then began to come to, and drink and nibble a little, but thinking about it, so was I just 16 months ago. I remember nothing for well over 24 hours, but then I was out of hospital 48 hours later!!!!

Take care, and don't worry :-)

Good morning Sandi, Shirley, TS, Ylee, Mike, Calpoppy,

Being the lazy person that I am, I am reposting what I said on facebook in regard to last night, Mimi and me.

'Good morning and thank you so much for the suggestions and help you gave last night. I needed to hear from you and it helped. I had to get off the computer for two reasons, one we had high winds with tree limbs flying in my neighbor's yards (our trees are periodically trimmed etc, so we were ok this time). The second and main reason being Mimi.
Koko's surgery was uneventful, perhaps they kept her overnight. Actually, the more I think about it, the more I am convinced that she was kept overnight. With Mimi it is different. She has a different vet who has so far been good and after discussion husband and I decided to have him do the surgery as well. Mimi was kept at his office for the day but that's it. And I think that it was a mistake.
OK, after I spoke with you nice people, Mimi got worse. She was unresponsive, reclining without any motion, eyes 'dead', skin cold, and I could not detect a heart beat, and no body movement. I panicked, my husband sat stoically by. I reclined next to Mimi, stroked her all over, begged her not to leave me, talked to her, hubby put a blanked over her,.... After a while I saw a tiny breathing movement , and after a while she was obviously breathing. She slept with me hugging her, yes, I was still next to her on the rug. After a half hour or so, she raised her head. Hubby brought water to her which she drank, I brought a little bit of wet food and she ate it, just a few bites. I carried her to my bedroom where she slept until this morning. I brought her down this morning, she is awake, licking my hand, drank and ate. Now she is basking in the cold sun that is coming through the windows.
This experience was as bad as when one of my children was sick when growing up! This mother cares too much not fret! And be calm at the same time to do what needs to be done to help the 'child'. THANK YOU ALL FOR BEING YOU, AND HELPING ME AND MIMI. I AM GRATEFUL.'

Hope you both managed to get some sleep and you wake refreshed in the morning.
I am sure Mimi will be feeling more like herself by the end of the week.....just think how you felt after having a similar operation!!!

I hope the wind wasn't as bad as Shirley said it was when it passed by her!!

I'll come back later to see if there is any news.

Hi Pros. Those high winds came through my area - about as strong as I remember. It was blowing trashcans right over and swinging the powerlines like jumpropes. I feared we might lose power.

Hope Mimi is comfortable and resting and will soon be back to her old self. Hope you both have a restful night and the winds have lost their punch by the time they reach your area. Will chack back tomorrow to see how you are both doing.

Evening, Pros ~ I had to come by and see how Mimi was doing. I know nothing about dogs, but I remember when Dixie had her little procedure it took a while for her to begin being "herself." Honestly, I don't remember much about it now, but I do remember she mostly just laid around while the anesthesia was wearing off. Then, after some hours, she suddenly roused herself, tottered off for a drink of water, and then went back to sleep for several hours.

I'm sure all the dog people will be ready with advice (or have been!). By tomorrow, I'd expect her to be recovering some of her spunk.

I don't have much spunk tonight. I woke up at 4 this morning, wide awake, so I went ahead and got up and took care of several things that have been needing doing around here. Then, I went off to work, and now? Guess where I'm headed? ;)

Mimi is home but she is not looking good. She stands or sits or reclines in the same spot. She has not moved one inch from where I sat her down. She is not eating nor drinking water. She is out of it! Poor thing. I have been getting advice on Facebook and it has helped. It is good to chat with people who have had lots of dogs and know what happens ... I tried to give her the pain meds but she is not accepting food and so no pill. She is not in pain since she is still drugged so I have time to give it to her when she is a little more alert. I think that I will have to sleep (sleep, me?) in the family room as I do not want to carry Mimi up the stairs and hurt her in the process. The sofa is comfortable enough. Besides we are supposed to get some strong winds and maybe some thunderstorms too. They will keep me awake anyways.

Thank you all for the chat, advice (appreciated), encouragement. This is only my second dog and so I do not have much knowledge. But I am learning from you and the friends on Facebook. I am blessed.

Pros, hope Mimi comes through it all well, and calms down after she's healed!

Looks like it's still warm there; hope you're enjoing it!

Hi Pros! She may have some vomiting after the surgery, just watch for that. And watch her water intake. On one of my dogs I gave her Pedialyte. When they start to feel better which at times is quite soon don't let her overdue! We had a hard time with Tagg and Tess trying to keep their activities curtailed!!

She will be fine!!

Great blog, Pros. If I lived on the East Coast I would be heavily medicated...

Sandi, the cat we call Miss Piggy (she is the LOUDEST) is Siamese (or part.)

We have a new Orange Tabby, pardon me, Ginger Tabby, that has appeared now and starting fights. He will be going to the scalpel as soon as we can catch him. BTW, the neighbors call him "Mean Mike" LOL He was sitting outside the window the other day and I said hello to him and he went "meow meow" right back at me!!
