FEBRUARY THE MONTH TO CELEBRATE LOVE IN LITERATURE, ART, MUSIC

Petrarca

--Love Sonnets to Laura--

Back in the 1300's, before card stores and chocolate manufacturers all conspired to commercialize the true spirit of love, passion, and romance, Francesco Petrarca literally wrote the book on infatuation. The collection of Italian verses, Rime in vita e morta di Madonna Laura (after 1327), translated into English as Petrarch's Sonnets, were inspired by Petrarch's unrequited passion for Laura (probably Laure de Noves), a young woman Petrarca first saw in church.

Era il giorno ch'al sol si scoloraro
per la pietà del suo factore i rai,
quando ì fui preso, et non me ne guardai,
chè i bè vostr'occhi, donna, mi legaro.

Tempo non mi parea da far riparo
contra colpi d'Amor: però m'andai
secur, senza sospetto; onde i miei guai
nel commune dolor s'incominciaro.

Trovommi Amor del tutto disarmato
et aperta la via per gli occhi al core,
che di lagrime son fatti uscio et varco:

Però al mio parer non li fu honore
ferir me de saetta in quello stato,
a voi armata non mostrar pur l'arco.

It was the day the sun's ray had turned pale
with pity for the suffering of his Maker
when I was caught, and I put up no fight,
my lady, for your lovely eyes had bound me.

It seemed no time to be on guard against
Love's blows; therefore, I went my way
secure and fearless-so, all my misfortunes
began in midst of universal woe.

Love found me all disarmed and found the way
was clear to reach my heart down through the eyes
which have become the halls and doors of tears.

It seems to me it did him little honour
to wound me with his arrow in my state
and to you, armed, not show his bow at all.

(The Petrarch Sonnet form deserves a blog of its own, maybe someday I will post one.)

The following Poem is my favorite love poem for the simple reason that my husband used to read it to me during our courtship!:

"How do I love thee? Let me count the ways..."
by Elizabeth Barrett Browning (1806-1861)

How do I love thee? Let me count the ways.
I love thee to the depth and breadth and height
My soul can reach, when feeling out of sight
For the ends of Being and ideal Grace.
I love thee to the level of everyday's
Most quiet need, by sun and candle-light.
I love thee freely, as men strive for Right;
I love thee purely, as they turn from Praise.
I love thee with a passion put to use
In my old griefs, and with my childhood's faith.
I love thee with a love I seemed to lose
With my lost saints, --- I love thee with the breath,
Smiles, tears, of all my life! --- and, if God choose,
I shall but love thee better after death.

“your little voice”
~e.e. cummings

your little voice
Over the wires came leaping
and i felt suddenly
dizzy
With the jostling and shouting of merry flowers
wee skipping high-heeled flames
courtesied before my eyes
or twinkling over to my side
Looked up
with impertinently exquisite faces
floating hands were laid upon me
I was whirled and tossed into delicious dancing
up
Up
with the pale important
stars and the Humorous
moon
dear girl
How i was crazy how i cried when i heard
over time
and tide and death
leaping
Sweetly
your voice

THE HEART'S FRIEND (SHOSHONE LOVE SONG)

Fair is the white star of twilight,
and the sky clearer at the day's end;
But she is fairer, and she is dearer.
She, my heart's friend!

Far stars and fair in the skies bending,
Low stars of hearth fires and wood smoke ascending,
The meadow-lark's nested,
The night hawk is winging;
Home through the star-shine the hunter comes singing.

Fair is the white star of twilight,
And the moon roving
To the sky's end;
But she is fairer, better worth loving,

Lyrics to the song But Beautiful
(Burke / VanHeusen)

Love is funny or it's sad
Or it's quiet or it's mad
It's a good thing or it's bad
But beautiful

Beautiful to take a chance
And if you fall you fall
And I'm thinking
I wouldn't mind at all

Love is tearful or it's gay
It's a problem or it's play
It's a heartache either way
But beautiful

And I'm thinking if you were mine
I'd never let you go
And that would be but beautiful I know
Love is tearful or it's gay

It's a problem or it's play
It's a heartache either way
But beautiful

And I'm thinking if you were mine
I'd never let you go
And that would be but beautiful I know

Good morning Sandi. Yes I am at home. LOL

I have been picking up the house for the cleaners who will be coming this afternoon. Also in a short while the furniture company from whom I purchased my spur of the moment piece of furniture, is delivering it shortly. And my hubby brought me a bunch of flowers yesterday and I just finished photographing them. Yes, I brought them outside to photograph them.

We have some nice sunshine at the moment. At some point it is going to turn to rain and then to snow, but not until Sunday they say. Supposedly this will be our snowstorm of the year. We'll see.

Yesterday I went to my Italian class. No conversation, we read, translated, and sung 'La Donna Immobile' from la Traviata. Actually I listened and let the others sing, did not want to subject them to my voice! In that class we have some choir singers and a conductor! Who said I am not smart, I know when to keep my mouth shut! At least when it is a matter of singing.

I hope that you are having a good day.

You Learn

After a while you learn the subtle difference
Between holding a hand and chaining a soul,

And you learn that love doesn't mean leaning
And company doesn't mean security.

And you begin to learn that kisses aren't contracts
And presents aren't promises,

And you begin to accept your defeats
With your head up and your eyes open
With the grace of a woman, not the grief of a child,

And you learn to build all your roads on today
Because tomorrow's ground is too uncertain for plans
And futures have a way of falling down in mid-flight.

After a while you learn...
That even sunshine burns if you get too much.

So you plant your garden and decorate your own soul,
Instead of waiting for someone to bring you flowers.

And you learn that you really can endure...

That you really are strong

And you really do have worth...

And you learn and learn...

With every good-bye you learn.

%u2015 Jorge Luis Borges

Despues de un tiempo,
uno aprende la sutil diferencia
entre sostener una mano
y encadenar un alma,
y uno aprende que el amor
no significa acostarse

Pros ~ I just came across a rousing review of a children's book called "Can't Sleep Without Sheep". It has a trailer that completely enticed me. I thought you'd get a kick out of it - and might even enjoy the whole book. You always could read it and then give it to a child!

Hi Pros - I see I dreamt I called by your blog this morning... and I think I dreamt I'd said "Good day" :) lol

The door man has been, chatted for 20 minutes, drunk my coffee, fixed the frame (took five minutes) and then I wrote out a cheque for the balance! Yikes - this back door has been an expensive and long drawn-out experience!!! lol

Good morning Ylee.

Good morning Alley. Each of us is responsible for our own actions. I choose to support children of all nations! And I choose not to let disagreeable behavior by others affect my life. Please re-open the children blog. Love you my Alley friend.

Here is a song of peace which in my mind translates to LOVE of human beings! I hope you all enjoy it.

Good morning PROS...Just dropping by to say Thank You for your support of my blog. I will leave it down for the moment. Why people behave the way they do is beyond me. My blog had nothing to do with him and provided a service. I know he probably feels rather smug today but it will be shortlived I am sure.

Anyway dear one, now that my kitties are fed, I am going to try to get more sleep. Turned out the light after 1 AM so I am due another couple of hours at least...LOL

Have a wonderful day dear one.

Hi Ylee, I hope your day has been a good one. Did you write a poem for wifey? You are so good at creating poems!

If you had the opportunity to see my husbands 'office' you'd know why I go by the appellation of man cave rather than office or den!

Thank you for stopping by and happy valentine's day to you.

Hi, Pros! With a hit-and-miss internet connection and having you blog hop about on my list of favorites, I almost missed the chance to wish you Happy Valentine's Day!

It's funny that what most folks used to call a den is now called a "man cave". Oh, well, I guess that's the times we live in! :)

Glad you've had a good day!

Good evening. I have been pretty much away from the computer today. An early appointment and then the chimney doctor was here to clean the chimney and for an inspection. At the same time hubby scheduled for an estimate on a small job in his man cave, goodness gracious the man was here for two and a half hours telling us all kinds of life stories! He also got the contract. I am exhausted from listening to the 'story telling' by a total stranger.

Well, here I am to thank you all for the wonderful posts on love and art-literature-music, and the Valentine greetings. You are all so sweet!

Alley
, love all of the songs. You know my musical likes don't you. Every song that you posted is a favorite! The J Barlas poem is a new one for me, it has lots of power and 'food for thought'. Thank you and big hugs back at you.

Shore, love those cats! Naughty does does too. Why naughty? She did not like all of the attention given to strangers and not her, so she got even with me by using the door stoop for her bathroom. The last guy had to jump over the 'waterfall' to get out of my house!

Briar, what a sweet photo, love it. Thank you for the hug greeting. Also thank you for posting 'What a Wonderful World', I absolutely love this song and Armstrong's rendition. Such a positive outlook!
Which of the rose photos are you referring to? The two roses, the stemmed rose, or the close up? I might take you up on the suggestion.

BF, it is so good to see your posts. I hope that you are eating some chocolates today, I am going to sneak in just one piece (allergies to chocolate). Our valentine's day celebration was the exchange of cards between hubby and me, Koko also gave each of us a card. We do have a thoughtful doggie.
Bacall and Bogart, now there is a love story to remember!

Skyepony, thank you so much for your very king comments. You are very sweet and I do appreciate both the comments and the VD greeting. I do hope that you are having a very nice and happy day.

Aqua, what a huge surprise to see you and a poem as well! You made my day and brought a smile to my face. Thank you for the beautiful poem, and I am so glad that you are in my family. I am happy with the thought that we will be seeing you soon. Big hugs and happy Valentine's day to you and Rain.

Sandi
, Robbie Burns could easily win me over with that poem! It is so beautifully romantic! Thank you for the roses and the poem. Also thank you for the nice quotes! Big hugs are coming your way.

GG, that's you holding your pet, right? Love the photo and what you did with it to make it into a greeting. Happy Valentine's Day to you too. I bet you are enjoying a few chocolates today.
What a lovely poem you wrote in post #14. I can say the same about your own blog site!

Hello Ylee.

Hi Bug, thank you for your nice comment and for your visit. Are you and hubby having a valentine's dinner tonight? We are having yesterdays leftover roast beef! LOL

Grothar, so glad that you stopped by. Josh sure has a nice voice and this song is probably one of the ones that I identify with him.
I do not remember knowing that there is a Calabrese connection with you. That's wonderful! I am sure that you know that Calabria was a big hub for the original Greek Sicilians. Even to this day there is a huge Greek influence in the Calabrian language, as well as the culture. I understand that there is a group of Calabrians descended from the Greeks that still speaks the Greek language of many centuries ago! Who knows, maybe you are a descendant of the original Greeks as I am.

Hi Karen, that's a lot of celebrating in your family for the month of February! What fun! Our older son was born in February as was my youngest brother. Happy VD to you.

Time to go eat something. Happy Valentine's Day everyone. Remember that love is not always romantic, you could be celebrating filial love, maternal or paternal love, love for pets, friendships, spiritual love,...

GG picked up on what I've been working with all day. I was going to try and have it posted on Wordpress for Valentine's day, but it's too complicated - too much work. I found two of mom's autograph albums from grade school. I'll turn them into some kind of post - they're really fun to go through, and there are lots of those "Roses are red..." variations!

And here's something Koko might like - a valentine I got from my Daddy when I was pretty little. Who knows how old - probably around 5 or 6. Isn't it cute?

"Love is own brother to self-sacrifice" By John Barlas

Love is own brother to self-sacrifice;
And in his happiest hour there is a breath
That sweeps him on tumultuously to death.
The heart that has not loved is cold as ice;
Lovers will sooner leave their paradise
Than such an one his joyless gloom, that saith
Wait for the bright day though it tarrieth.
Love freely gives up Love, a priceless price.
In Love's heart burns a self-destroying fire,
A heavenward, suicidal, soaring flame:
From the doomed barque Love looks forth with desire
On the grand surf-line drawing ever nigher:
The loveless hug their loneliness and shame;
Love lights the marriage-bed, a glorious pyre.

What a Wonderful World
by George David Weiss, George Douglas, Bob Thiele

I see trees of green, red roses too
I see them bloom for me and you
And I think to myself what a wonderful world.

I see skies of blue and clouds of white
The bright blessed day, the dark sacred night
And I think to myself what a wonderful world.

The colors of the rainbow so pretty in the sky
Are also on the faces of people going by
I see friends shaking hands saying how do you do
They're really saying I love you.

I hear babies crying, I watch them grow
They'll learn much more than I'll never know
And I think to myself what a wonderful world
Yes I think to myself what a wonderful world.

-----------------

If ever you might perhaps be looking for inspiration of what to paint next, might I suggest your own stylized version of that lovely white and pink rose you photographed recently? It seems so appropriate for February, the month of love in literature, art, music. How could anyone not love that?

And then, of course, take a photo of it to post here.

Well, I put up a new blog but I did not forget the nice people who posted on this blog recently.

Briar
, I truly appreciate your nice comments. You are kind. I also appreciate your visits, and I enjoy your blog.

Hi Sandi
, you already know that I did not go to class yesterday but that I painted at home. I did more painting today. I think that I will paint the same subject in a different style and see which one I prefer.
It is in the low 20s right now and it is cold. Last night the wind howled all night and kept waking me up. More of the same is expected.
I just saw in the news that a mile or so away from me, a huge tree fell on a house (due to the wind), pinned the couple under the tree and it took over two hours to free them. The impact was so bad that the house was moved from its foundation! Yes, the house has been condemned!
Well, I still have three heavy blankets on my bed and they are going to stay in place tonight as well. I hate cold rooms. I like my temps to be at 70 degrees but heavy cold winds lower the temps quite a bit even in the house.

NumberWise
, thank you so much for the appreciated comments. I am glad that you liked the story. It was my pleasure to write it up for those who were interested.
I am reading another book written by the same author, it is about Catherine de Medici. If I have the time and there is interest, I will write up about this Queen. She too was shipped off at the age of 14 to marry a 14 year old prince who became king eventually. In those centuries the royal or near royal young girls were bartered for political reasons. So sad.

Ylee
, yes we did have nasty windy and cold weather. More of the same tonight. The odd thing is that Koko likes to sit outside in this cold! Strange little creature.

Hi Shore, I responded to your post on your blog. All is well here. Looking forward to your next literary inspiration.

Sandi and GardenGirl, hello. I answered your posts on your blogs as well.

Thank you everyone for stopping by and leaving a message or two. I welcome your visits.

New posts will be acknowledged later.

Lovely idea for a blog. I'll try to get back to post something a little later. I'm running my system scan and my internet slows down a lot during the run.

Hope things are going well with you folks up there. It is COLD down here but hopefully it will start warming up after tonight.

We have a lot of celebrations in February too! We start with my brother's birthday on the 1st(he is now 2 years older than me again :), then on the 13th, it's my nieces, then of course the 14th is Valentine's Day (my Bunco group meets on this night), then on the 20th my younger brother celebrates his birthday (and now I'll be two years older than him again - I'm 18 months apart from my youngest and next oldest brother), and then on the 21st my oldest turns 36. Whew....we'll take a breather after that!
