By our nature, we are sort of in the human misery business. So...as a change of pace...here's a link to a positive story of hope and inspiration.

We are supporting specific efforts by on scene relief organizations to locate and identify people with disabilities and assess and provide for their needs.

Your support is making a difference.

We will provide financial assistance to Disabled People's Organizations (DPO's) working in Japan to serve people with disabilities in Japan affected by the earthquake there.

Culturally people with disabilities are particularly marginalized there. Our focus will be on supporting efforts to provide shelter and food.

We are aware of a couple of small organizations working with people with disabilities. Their efforts are difficult under the best of circumstances. The current situation will be especially challenging.

Please continue to support our efforts on behalf of those who need the most help.

A Novel Approach to Helping Haiti Build a Future

By: Portlight, 1:11 AM GMT on March 02, 2011

We recently met the woman spearheading the project described below. It seems like a great way to help Haitians help themselves. We want to help her expand her work. It seems to be the sort of thing that will produce a meaningful return on your contribution.

A few hundred dollars will make a huge difference. A few thousand will help change the dynamics of a whole community.

It strikes us as a wonderful way to be involved in the long term solution to some of Haiti's problems.

If it makes sense to you, please consider a contribution. Mark your check or PayPal contribution 'vanilla'

As I mentioned to you, I introduced vanilla into Haiti in 2002, to help establish an industry for the local farmers.

We grow our vanilla on cocoa trees in Haiti (chocolate trees), since vanilla is a vine it uses the cocoa tree as a tutor. This will help the farmer double his yield in product and production.

We are currently making vanilla extract in Costa Rica. Our next big project is to cure the beans and produce the vanilla extract in Haiti.

The earthquake put us back just a bit, but we are now up and moving steadily forward for Haiti. Sales we have now from the extract made in Costa Rica from vanilla beans or extract goes back into our project in Haiti, working with the local farmers.

We currently are working with 500 cocoa farmers in the north of Haiti where we also have a school and nutrition program located in a very remote and rural area in northern Haiti.
