Please weigh in! New WU Survey

I don't know if others are as curious as I am about how many people actually like or dislike the new WU site, so I'd like to do a little survey. There's been plenty of hashing the good and bad points, so I don't want to get into any of that; I just want to get down to the hard, cold numbers, which I will tally in the header every time I visit my blog to update.

If you can, ignore the comments with opinions; including MINE! I don't want to attempt to change anyone's mind, I'm just curious how the new site is being received. Everyone is welcome to state an opinion or not, as you please. Absolutely no one will be belittled for speaking your mind (politely) so feel safe here.

Please just post:

"Yes" for I do like it.
"No" for I don't like it.
"Not sure" for obvious reasons.

As of the first 194 posts and one WU email(not all are votes, some are comments):

Yes: 21
No: 61
Not Sure: 7

Quoting NEwatcher:
I am here mainly during hurricane season. But check in during the winter just to read Dr.Jeff Masters.

I do not like this new format.
I will not leave the site as I need the hurricane info. I get here. I also have become fond of the very talented posters who I find here year after year.

Keep the classic please.

NEwathcer; Thanks for weighing in! They claim they'll keep the Classic available indefinitely and I sure hope they do!

duke; Thanks for posting. I agree; and actually I think that the new design is a step below many other weather sites that are out there.

Thank goodness the Classic View is still available!

Not to be unkind. This WAS a great site.
And I have been a many year subscriber...but no renewal now. I agree with other comments - just like the "other guys" now.

febriola; So glad to be of help! Stop by anytime! :-)

burnssp; Thanks for your input!

Foxxy; All is well here, thanks, and I hope it is with you, too. There's no pollen here, yet.... our big pollen months are May and June when everything first starts to green-up and bloom. (Hey, I made a rhyme!) I hope your pollen isn't bothering you too much!

Karen; Yes, we're talking about the same Patch. I'm a Calender Editor for 5 towns, and I do two columns for each of those towns, as well. It's not terribly exciting or creative stuff, since I just write short blurbs, but I enjoy it. I'll email some links to you.

Beth - that's great (about Patch). I'd love to know which cities you are representing, as I love your writing. I didn't know Patch was affiliated with AOL. I went to their "About Page" and couldn't find anything, although I admit to scanning quickly - too much info!!!

I hope we are talking about the same thing....I'm sure we are! Patch.

I always sign in, so I never see the ads. :)

I've used AD Blockers in the past & they are effective for most site.
Hope all is well with you & yours --- so glad that Spring is in the air! Lots of Pollen too! Aah-choo!

Bill; Yes, I vaguely remember that; was it bay or sea scallops he was poaching?

Foxxy; If you sign up for free Ad Block, you won't see any ads whether you have a WU membership or not. I can find the website if you'd like to know which one I use.

CurlyDog; Thanks for the links. No, I hadn't thought about posting that link on another blog; feel free to post it elsewhere, if you'd like.

febriola; To make the Classic WU your home page go to (at top of your screen)

Tools/ select Options from the drop-down menu/select the 'General' tab/ and then copy and paste the
Classic view url into the Home page 'field'

http://classic.wunderground.com/

and then click Okay.

This should make your browser automatically open up to the old WU page.

Also, if you decide you don't want to see any ads, sign up for this free ad blocker; it works great!

http://adblockplus.org/en/

Good luck and please let me know if this works for you!

Thank you for letting me know I could still use the classic site. I did bookmark it, but I would like to have it set as my home page so that when I open my browser it will automatically load rather than the new site. Can you tell me how I do that? Thank you so much.

As long as we have choices, I'm fine... I would like choice in light bulbs also... if some like the CFL bulbs, and the hassle of disposing of them if they break or burn out, fine... but I prefer the Thomas Edison incandescent bulbs and dread the day when they become outlawed. You may conclude I am resistant to change, but I would rather think that I support everyone's right to make their own consumer choices.

One last comment... I used to be a paid member, hated all the ads... but I have found that some of the ads for products I use offer discounts and free shipping with promotion codes, so I've been putting up with the clutter of ads.

Thanks again for the help. :-)

Bill; I don't think there would be any sea scallops near the harbor (as you know, the same harbor my Dad worked out of for many years) so I'm assuming they must be bay scallops.

Brownie42; Thanks for posting!

Karen; Yes, I do work for Patch, AOL's news web site. I'm currently writing for 5 town's pages; none of which are 'local' but they're in the same State! But, I'm supposed to take on some more sites that are closer to home sometime in the near future. I like working for Patch and enjoy doing the writing; best of all, I like working from home and being able to make my own schedule!

Wunderground Redesign Woos Advertisers

Written on Feb 3, 2011
Author Gavin Dunaway

Early spring, the groundhog proclaimed, and we New Yorkers snorted as we slipped and slided our way through an ice storm. People in Chicago were too snowed-in to comment.

Groundhog Day also marked the launch of the redesigned Wunderground (short for Weather Underground) site, the self-proclaimed David facing The Weather Channel’s Goliath. Wunderground is looking to build its user base of 21 million and 18,000 personalized weather stations.

Advertisers will be intrigued that Wunderground partnered with Nielsen Claritas to offer Nielsen @Plan Profile Points to offer audience targeting by zipcode, as well as Quantcast for hypertargeted audience segmentation.

In addition, the weather site has hooked up with dynamic creative specialists Dapper to offer exclusive targeting based on local weather conditions. That’s right, the technology will enables advertisers to promote products based on the weather — I think people in Chicago might be interested in snow blowers…

Numberwise; Oh, yes! Scallops = YUM!!! Considering that my Dad was a commercial fisherman sea scalloper and I've shucked the things by the thousands during my childhood, you'd think I'd be sick of them, but despite that we ate seafood almost everyday for years, I've never tired of eating it. In fact, it wasn't until I was long grown and out of the house with a family of my own that I was surprised to hear my Mom talk about how we ate fish because we were too poor to buy meat (she was talking about how my Dad's hunting brought meat to our family dinner table) and this was something I had never been aware of. I thought we ate fish because we LIKED it! But, times were different back then; we caught, hunted, picked in the wild or grew most of our food and we had a little house that didn't take much to heat or sustain and yet, a family of five had a comfortable living.

Mass; I can't wait to see the movie again, too! Yes, I did see Shine and although I haven't watched it in a while, I have a copy of it at home. I loved the piano-playing and found it somewhat disappointing that there wasn't more complete pieces in the film. It was always a jolt when he'd be playing so beautifully and then they'd abruptly segue off to another scene!

I hope you don't have too much flooding while we're enjoying this warm spell; we're doing okay here. The top layer of earth getting a bit squishy, but no flooding. I have to keep reminding myself that it's still only March and we still have more winter ahead before spring is here to stay!

Good Morning {{{Peace}}}!

So glad you, Lorne and friends had a most enjoyable afternoon/evening outing yesterday with good friends. I can't wait till "The King's Speech" comes to one of the premium cable shows later this year. I've always enjoyed Colin Firth and Geoffrey Rush in many of their other individual film projects, so I'm looking forward to this one! Those "King's Speech" film clips I've seen thus far show them as having a phenomenal on-screen compatibility and talent. Did you ever see Geoffrey Rush's Oscar-winning role in "SHINE" - (1996)? So well deserved!

I'm really enjoying a nice thawing process brought to us by a currrent temp of 57F degrees!! We still have a few feet of snow left on the ground and don't know how much flooding will be created by all the expected heavy rains later today into tomorrow. We'll just have to keep monitoring our sump pump well and keep our wet/dry vac on standby for extra measure.

In the meantime, hope and yours have a decent Sunday and don't end up too water-logged in Chatham!

Sandi; Or should I call you Super Sandi? Brilliant idea to put the Classic link on your list of recommended links!

I hope you're having a lovely Sunday, too! The sun is sort-of out here, and it is wonderfully mild so we are planning a nice walk, later, when our chores are done.

We went out with friends to see The King's Speech movie yesterday afternoon and I absolutely loved it! Have you seen it yet? I was wondering how it was received 'at home'. It seemed to be well written and very well acted.

After the movie (my third movie in ten years!) we had dinner with our friends in a very small, local restaurant where we had a wonderful meal; being on the coast, the seafood is fabulous here, so that's what we all ordered. I had baked sea scallops.... hmmm! So good!

How's your garden coming? Has the weather let you get out to work in it? It's still a bit early to start opening up our gardens, yet, but we'll be starting soon. Our vegetable garden consists mostly of raised beds and we're going to add another one this year. Maybe two! I've always been an avid gardener, but with the price of food going up so quickly, we'll be growing more of our own this year.

febriola; Thanks for voting! I don't really understand why they had to 'fix' the site, myself. I know they wanted to so-called 'update' it, and they have made great improvements to the site in the past; but this definitely wasn't one of them.

Sandi; Thanks for posting the link fix again! Super Sandi to the rescue!!! :-)

Mass; Good idea to post the Classic link in your blog header. It seems kind of silly that WU members have to take it upon themselves to do what WU should be doing themselves. It speaks volumes that they took the Classic button off the new site.

We're having a bit of a thaw here, today, too! It actually feels like spring outdoors! Woo-hoo! I'm lovin' it!

Yes, I'm doing domestic chores, and I have to work for at least 4 hours today, but then hubby & I get to goof off with my life-long best friend and her boyfriend (OtherBug's hosts last summer, for those who kept up with OtherBug's adventures) when we go to the movies to see the 4pm showing of The King's Speech and then the four of us are going to a little, local restaurant that is owned by friends of ours' for some supper. It's going to be a combination birthday celebration, seeing as our birthdays are all kind of clumped together.

Hope you are enjoying a wonderful weekend!

NO- I don't like the new site. The old site was/is so much easier to read, and find information. The new page just seems to scroll on forever with no sense of direction or priority. You have to wonder what goals they thought they were achieving with this. The old site is concise, compact, and easyt to navigate. It also presents the info at a glance.

As long as the classic remains available, then I guess it doesn't matter. BUT, there is NO link that I could find on the page to the classic menu- had to discover it here. That's a mistake. I actually took WU off of my i-Phone because of the new layout, and it's forced down my throat. No subscription renewal for me this year.

Good Morning {{{Peace}}} ~

At least, today, I'm not experiencing any glitches on the tempermental new WU, but have bookmarked the old, created a permanent link to it on the top of my blog-header, so to help those who need easy access. I still have periodic problems with a disappearing avatar but seem to only be able to straighten it out in the old format. Hopefully in time all will straighten out, as I'm sure they don't want to lose a whole host of WU members due to discriminative problems caused by one's browser, etc.

Thankfully, weatherwise, it's gradually warming up a bit and helping to melt the residual few feet of snow still in areas. Monday's storm looks nasty here and could bring a ice/snow/rain mix, etc. I'm curious to know what spring's official arrival (in two weeks) will look like. Heaven help us if it's more snow! LOL!

Like you, I have to attend to some domestic chores today, as it's been a hectic week. Hope you continue to enjoy your new job and have settled in into a more manageable schedule. Enjoy your weekend and may we both escape any further wintry challenges or headaches in the days ahead!

They haven't taken the "choice to use" the classic site away - you need to log on using 'classic' instead of 'www' in the address bar, then SAVE it as a favourite/bookmark or PIN to bar, if you use Chrome.

Foxxy; Thanks for popping in! I'm sorry to hear about all the issues you and others are having with the new WU. It really makes me wonder what Admin thinks of their new site, based on all the negative reactions and glitches. I hope they're actually reading all the comments on the old blog about the new WU's debut which is still getting new posts on a regular basis, even though several blogs have been posted on top of it since then.

I hope you're having a wonderful weekend!

JimInks; Thanks!

Gamma; I hope all the new WU bugs get worked out. It's good to see you here! Thanks for posting!

DonntAnnoyMe; Thanks for stopping by with all your helpful suggestions!

Karen; I'm glad to hear that everything on the new site is working for you! Thanks for chiming in!

Bill; How nice to see you again! I'm sorry that you're having the same WU troubles as so many others seem to be having. I'm still sticking with the Classic View and other than my avatar going on Walkabout now and then, it works fine.

Numberwise; Have you contracted Chrome about the issue? I wonder if there's anything they can do about it.

Zeusatolympus; I think it's downright odd that they took the Classic View button off the new view page, but then I guess they don't want to make it too easy to get to the Classic View any more. I'm sure they're highly dismayed at the -at best- luke-warm reception the new site has received.

Curleydog; I've heard several complaints that the site dumps them on a location some distance from where they actually live. Sounds like you've found a good solution!

Weatherwx; It's my personal opinion that the site might as well be run by a 12 year old, considering types of decisions they've been making. This whole changeover has been executed in an extremely unprofessional manner.

plage21; Excellent points! Thanks!

No, not a fan of the new layout.

I do a lot of UX (user experience) for web sites and I'm baffled by the new layout and how information is presented. Happily, I learned and saved the url for the classic layout classic.wunderground.com and thus can find and compare the weather in my favorite cities w/out having to scroll.

It seems that this new layout was a surprise to many, including me. Perhaps there should have been a soft launch before the actual roll out. All of the glitches and odd placements could have been worked out prior to a final launch.

Also, the new layout seems to give short shrift to the photos, which is one of the great draws of the site and distinguishes it from other Weather sites. Wunderground had built an extraordinarily close-knit, respectful global community and then splintered it w/ the new design.

@NumberWise #154 - Running Chrome 10.0.648.127 beta in Windows 7 and get SunsetSailor and regional Radar with no problems on both classic and new WU sites.
Only glitch I've noticed is the Full Screen map goes directly to an incorrect physical location without allowing me to select a recently visited location or input a location.  WU support did respond with a suggestion to clear the cache - did not work, but they did respond.  For a work-around I've denied WU access to physical location so Full Screen location window waits for my selection or input.

They should continue to give us the choice! The classic made the info fast and easy.
If they believe the new design is so good then put the links back! Why would so many people continue to go to Classic? Because it was a good design! Now WU looks like everyone else.

I've had an interesting glitch. I don't think it's related to the new site, but I've never encountered it before.

I'm using the Chrome browser. When I click on SunsetSailor's blog, or on her name, I get the message: "This webpage is not available. Error 330 - content decoding failed." This happens on either the new site or the classic site.

If I switch to IE, the blog opens just fine. I haven't had trouble with any other blogs I visit.

I have always had one other problem on WU with Chrome - the regional radars don't display the one I click on. I don't have problems with other websites, and I like Chrome for several reasons, so I just don't go to the regional radars through the Maps & Radar link.

I haven't bothered with the unresponsive WU support...

Wanted to pop in & say hi... and to say the new site/format has the top right hand corner missing when I use the MAC & FireFox --- and I happen to know that I am not the only with the issue. I cannot check my mail using this format since Mail is part of the page missing!

Hope all is well with you.... I've been busy & haven't been on the blogs much.
Miss everyone!

I am using a MAC with the SAFARI browser and have the same trouble as Foxx. Haven't been able to get any satisfaction from WU support !!!

I still like the new layout, and I don't have any issues with anything missing. I've been on two different computers: my laptop and desktop - no problems with either one.

I wonder if browsers make a difference? I saw that Foxx uses Firefox with her Mac. It might be interesting to find out what browsers folks are using and what kind of computer - I wonder if there is a correlation?

I am on a PC using Firefox with no issues at all.

People who are having issues MIGHT try going to View across their top toolbar, then choose Zoom> reset.

When I did that everything shrunk on my screen. I've been using the Ctrl button while pressing either (-) or (+) if I need to increase or decrease anything for quite sometime.

When I have my students go on Sheppardsoftware.com at school, sometimes the screen fitting is too large and they can't see all the states on the screen (it's a states and capitals activity). All I do is a Ctrl (-) and that takes care of it!

I tried Sandi's suggestion and I still cannot adjust the font so that it is not cut off on the right side of the comment block.

This may not a font problem, could be a compatibility issue in IE. Do you notice that the problem only occurs on certain pages?

To fix it, on your top menu, choose Tools and click Compatibility View, then refresh.

Hello Beth,

Well, when I have time I use the new format but when I am in a hurry I go back tot he "classic WU" ...

I know I will get use to the new one but there are still so many kinks to work out.

and I tried Sandi's suggestion and I still cannot adjust the font so that it is not cut off on the right side of the comment block.

Anyway, good to see you around again!!!

Mass; Those babies look so similar that I can easily understand the mix-up; if it takes a second look for the mother and grandmother to tell them apart, I can just imagine how hard it is for someone who hasn't met them in person! Thanks very much! I'll look forward to seeing the revised version. :-)

Thanks also for the weather forecast! When we went to bed last night, it was a chilly 13 degrees, and we woke up to 14 degrees temps, so any warm-ups would be greatly appreciated! At least the wind isn't howling like it has been, lately..... and.... I think the sun is trying to come out! Woo-hoo!

Thanks for stopping by! TGIF! Hope you have a GREAT weekend!

Good Morning {{{Peace}}}!

Sorry about the snafu in yesterday's regular email regarding the alleged identity of the pic I thought you had posted of your adorable new grandson. My brain is so rattled these days. I can easily correct it and return the right version to you later.

Guess someone else beat me to the punch in posting a direct link to WU's classic design. Good thing, as I was equally surprised to find it missing from the newer start up page. Just in case, I've put the link permanently on the top portion of my blog header for those who need future permanent easy access to reverting back.

Thought I'd offer you your 7 day forecast for your town/city of MA courtesy of NOAA. We've awakened to temps of 11F degrees here in my Northeastern border town of our state. Boy, it doesn't remotely feel like the first week of March!! Fortunately, we may have a relatively decent warmup over the weekend. Hope you and yours have an enjoyable Friday and Weekend ahead. Today's another busy day for me, so I thought I'd post now while I can.

Good Morning, Steel; Thanks for adding your thoughts!

I'm not sure whose weather forecast is more accurate for us. Currently WU shows our area at 23 degrees and clear and we are actually 17 degrees and overcast.
