For the last 5 years I've been lucky enough to witness a modern social networking miracle that has changed many a life post disaster.
After Hurricane Ike struck Texas in Sept 2008 the members of wunderground.com organized a relief run to Texas to deliver badly needed Durable Medical Goods lost to the storm.
From this Genesis of Good, the seeds of portlight.org were sown. Since then the growth has been steady for the 501C3 Organization with generous help from Dr. Masters here, the many volunteers and also, many private and Corporate Sponsors.
But like with any good ship, there has been a Captain at the helm for portlight, and that is Paul Timmons.
Recently in June 2013 I had the opportunity to attend the Portlight "Getting it Right" conference in Atlanta. Paul and I were seriously proud of how things have progressed since 2008. After the opening evening dinner we had some time to reflect with Dr. Masters to chat about the future role portlight has in Disaster relief.
During that conversation we talked about the relief we delivered to Haiti post earthquake and all the other events we tended to. The number came up that over 2 million dollars in relief has been delivered to those who needed it.
Recently we've learned that Paul Timmons will receive the Abraham Zelmanowitz Award for 2013.
This award is one that recognizes the Humanity and faith of those who display it. And this years recipient is in a class all by Himself.
He is my friend, mentor and partner.
September 11 attacks,
On Abraham Zelmanowitz,
One of his best friends was co-worker and fellow computer programmer Ed Beyea, who was a quadriplegic. With the elevators not working after the attack, Beyea had no way of getting out. Rather than go down the stairs and try to save himself, Zelmanowitz chose to stay with his friend, and presumably comfort him until the bitter end (many believe they prayed together during those final moments as well; as Beyea was a devout Roman Catholic).
Nearly one year after his death, Zelmanowitz's remains were positively identified among the debris, and he was brought to the Mount of Olives Jewish Cemetery in Jerusalem, where he was interred beside his parents.
People Helping People.
Congratulations to Paul Timmons on receiving such a noble Award.
