Problems finding your station on the wundermap or station list?

Hi PWS owners!

If your station is reporting just fine but you cannot find your station on the wundermap or the station list, it is probably getting flagged and removed by our QC process. We have to sanity check all of the data that comes in from our personal weather stations, to ensure we are displaying reasonable data on our map. However, occasionally some things slip through the cracks, like some erroneous data appearing on the wundermap or accurate data being removed from the wundermap. This is because we have to compare the temperature at your station to nearby stations, to validate the data. If the temperature at your station is significantly warmer or cooler than nearby stations, it will get flagged by the QC algorithm and removed from the map and the station list. But when coastal or elevation influences are present, the temperature may actually vary significantly. It is very hard to capture these real temperature differences, this is why we have been working so hard to improve our QC algorithm.

We should be launching the new QC process this week, and hope to reduce the cases where accurate stations are removed from the station list and the wundermap. Alternatively, we may see some other problems that arise. We know that whenever you try to fix one problem, other problems become more obvious. So please comment here on this blog if your station wrongfully disappears from the station list and the wundermap. We will continue to tweak the QC algorithm to improve your experience.

Note that this is not an issue with the PWS dashboard error message that shows a red triangle with the message "This PWS is not reporting". This error message is because Weather Underground has not received recent data from this PWS. When this happens, you need to check your weather station software to make sure your Weather Underground station id and password are entered correctly. And also check your internet connection and power to the station.

Thanks for your feedback and support while we continue to improve the experience for our PWS owners. Please comment on this blog with any concerns or suggestions you may have.

Thanks,
Kari

I added a weather station (ID DEWILMI40) on July 19. The station still isn't on the PWS list, though it does appear on Wundermap. My reported data is pretty consistent with nearby stations. Can you help?

It looks like it is on the city list now when I search for Wilmington, DE. Please let me know if you still cannot find it on the nearby stations list.

Thanks,
Kari

The latest chrome that auto installs. I have just checked again. All my data from yesterday that was fine at the time, is now reading as a mishmash of degrees Fahrenheit with C beside them. e.g. In the table showing highs and lows for yesterday its posting a high of 73.4 deg C which would correctly convert to the reported high of ~22degC

All the graphs are then crazy high as well. With corresponding crazy lows. I also just tried in the latest build of Internet explorer and the same thing happens.

I have set wunderground to default to metric measurements when I'm logged into my account, such as now.

If I could paste a picture I could easily show this to you.

What is also interesting, is that If I navigate to a previous day then BACK to the current day, the bug persists, all of the historical correct data for today is now reading as the strange mismash of Fahrenheit -C whilst the current as of the last update from the station data is correctly showing as Deg C at sane values.

This is the page that I am using to do this.

http://www.wunderground.com/personal-weather-stat ion/dashboard?ID=IQUEENSL275#history

I can reproduce this bug in the latest Internet explorer as well.

Pishnagambo, I have emailed you so you can attach images and screenshots easier. I would like to better understand the problem so we can try to fix it!

Thanks,
Kari

This is a great question and something we have put a lot of thought into. A long time ago, we sent emails to PWS owners when their station was flagged by our QC. But the PWS owners would complain that they were getting too many emails, because they weren't concerned with fixing their sensor. So we stopped the emails. However, I think we should get the emails back up and running, in a smarter way. If the station doesn't usually get flagged, or if the station hasn't been flagged in a long time, then send an email. If the station failed QC recently and an email was sent, then don't send another email. This is tricky so we'll put a lot of thought into the logic before launching a new email system for our QC process.

As for your second question, the station doesn't need to be resubmitted to get it back on the map. If the station is reporting a temperature within reason, it will automatically get added back to the wundermap.

Thanks,
Kari

thanks for the reply. with regards to the emails, perhaps a setting can be made available where the user can elect to not receive QC emails. If implemented, it should be defaulted to 'not receive' emails so there is effectively no change to the status quo, but if someone is dropping off the map, they can then flick this on and be notified.

by making it opt-in the mails can be more 'noisy' and verbose.

if a station is flagged and subsequently removed from the map, is there notification to the user or a way to see that it is because of QC issues and exactly what the issues were?

subsequently, is there a way to resubmit the station for renewed qc testing once the issue is resolved?

I have noticed a very serious and reproducible issue. I am using metric measurements. However when I look at the previous days data on my PWS it is reporting Fahrenheit temps with deg C beside the number. So its putting a C in yet its still in Fahrenheit and not doing the conversion.

I have verified that its not my station by looking at historical data. The error occurs as soon as it rolls over to a new day. All previous values which were correct suddenly become MUCH higher. Im assuming because they get stored as Fahrenheit and converted on the fly to view. In this case the conversion is not happening properly and Im getting reported highs of 75 Deg C ! Instead of 23 deg c which is the correct value.

Big Coppitt Key Gulfside KFLKEYWE18 is no longer listed, I've checked the temp reading with other thermometers and they are all the same. I could adjust it down but feel I would be tampering with the data.

It looks like your station is currently reporting 95, whereas the nearby airport is 89 degrees. Your station may be trending to warm. Keep an eye on it and see how it does at different times of the day. I will add this station to my list to keep a watch on it.

Apparently 2 stations in Ravenna , Ohio has slipped through the cracks. They have been reporting dew points in the mid to upper 80's when in reality it's in the upper 60's. I think the stations are Black horse and King Street. My station Ravenna 1E is right in line with surrounding station, while the 2 mentioned above are WAY out of line. Those 2 stations should be red flagged until they recalibrate there sensors.

Unfortunately, while all variables go through our QC process, only bad temperature readings will get removed from the wundermap. We are currently working to improve our QC process so wind speed/direction, dewpoint, pressure, etc will be included in the QC process. In the meantime, I will send a message to the PWS owners asking them to check their sensors.

You can contact the station owner yourself with messages like this by viewing the blue "i" next to the station name on the PWS history page.

Just wondering why the baro pressure shown on my "Current Conditions" page differs so much from what is shown on WonderMap data. For example, the "Current Conditions" pressure for my station is 30.04 but shows as 29.87 on WonderMap. The WonderMap pressure is what was reported to WUG by my station...

I'll look into this. Are your time settings correct on your weather station?

Your webcam should be working now and linked to your PWS. Let me know if you continue to see the problem.

Thanks, looks much more stable now. Is this a "just me" issue or is it something worth reporting through the more normal support channels in the future?

In the present version of Wundermap I do not see my own PWS, nor other near PWSes in the same area!!!!!
And only very few PWS further away.
In the previous version many more visible ......

What are your QC specs for pressure? If you tighten up the pressure spec, an Altimeter pressure requirement would be best as it would then agree with CWOP.

Thanks for the info. Is there a similar official position on webcam issues with the new dashboard? I know there were load issues last year and my webcam kept getting dropped, but now it's simply not attached to my station unless I click through and then there is always a recent image on the webcam page itself.
