Problems finding your station on the wundermap or station list?

Hi PWS owners!

If your station is reporting just fine but you cannot find your station on the wundermap or the station list, it is probably getting flagged and removed by our QC process. We have to sanity check all of the data that comes in from our personal weather stations, to ensure we are displaying reasonable data on our map. However, occasionally some things slip through the cracks, like some erroneous data appearing on the wundermap or accurate data being removed from the wundermap. This is because we have to compare the temperature at your station to nearby stations, to validate the data. If the temperature at your station is significantly warmer or cooler than nearby stations, it will get flagged by the QC algorithm and removed from the map and the station list. But when coastal or elevation influences are present, the temperature may actually vary significantly. It is very hard to capture these real temperature differences, this is why we have been working so hard to improve our QC algorithm.

We should be launching the new QC process this week, and hope to reduce the cases where accurate stations are removed from the station list and the wundermap. Alternatively, we may see some other problems that arise. We know that whenever you try to fix one problem, other problems become more obvious. So please comment here on this blog if your station wrongfully disappears from the station list and the wundermap. We will continue to tweak the QC algorithm to improve your experience.

Note that this is not an issue with the PWS dashboard error message that shows a red triangle with the message "This PWS is not reporting". This error message is because Weather Underground has not received recent data from this PWS. When this happens, you need to check your weather station software to make sure your Weather Underground station id and password are entered correctly. And also check your internet connection and power to the station.

Thanks for your feedback and support while we continue to improve the experience for our PWS owners. Please comment on this blog with any concerns or suggestions you may have.

Thanks,
Kari

I've never actually seen my station (KWVCHARL13) on the map. I do cut my computer off at night which provides the data but it updates when I turn it on again. Could this be the cause?

Your station is currently not online. Once your station is back online, and passing QC, it should appear on the map.

Good point, we will take this into consideration. If your station gets flagged by our QC for bad data, we could add a message to your PWS page (for only the station owner to see) explaining when and why the station was last flagged.

Thanks,

Yes, we will look into this. Please let me know next time it happens so I can look into why it is getting flagged.

My station (KORPENDL21) has a tendency to fall off of the map at night. I live in a rural area that experiences very cool downslope air from the nearby hills when the sun goes down, particularly when the conditions are stable with relatively high barometric pressure. At times, the temp can differ by as much as 15° F from stations in the town only 5+ miles away, even though the elevation difference isn't all that great. (The temperature change is VERY obvious when riding a motorcycle home at night!). This kind of microclimate no doubt is difficult for your system to accurately predict. Is there anything you can do to help keep my station on the map?

Thank you,

Brett

It looks like your station is online and passing QC now. Please let me know when it falls off the map again so I can run it through the QC at the same time to find the error. We will use this station to help us fine tune the QC process.

Gauging my station with Nearby stations is not necessarily a good way to go due to local topography My positions tends to get in an eddy where cooling winds can be blocked and can cause a hot spot at my location driving a half mile north, south, or east can at times cause a drastic change in temperature. I shall do some further investigation but I believe my data is reasonably correct.

I've noticed that my PWS data is not showing up on the wundermap and now I may know why after reading the blog. Your algorithm must suspect that data coming from my station is incorrect as compared to other stations nearby. My neighbor who lives 500 yards away, and also has a PWS (KNCSALUD04) gets readings that differ from mine because of a number of factors that don't influence my readings (higher altitude and more trees in proximity to his house). His station does appear on the wundermap as Staton Ridge. Mine is GreenRiver township.
My data seems to be ok. Appreciate it if u could check it.
One question for u; what does the blue circle around my location on the PWS dashboard mean?
Best regards,
Gerry (KNCSALUD6)

It looks like your station is currently on the map and passing QC.
Your station data here.
The QC algorithm takes into account elevation by only comparing to stations within 300 feet elevation gain. Also, your station is being compared to many nearby stations. We calculate an average temperature from a handful of stations, and then allow stations to pass that are within a reasonable range from this average temperature. So it should not fail just because one nearby station reports significantly different from your station.

Kari

KCOFRANK4 is not showing up, and the data has been uploading properly. I'm another case where the topography has great effects on the readings between my location here and the surrounding stations: we are up on a high plateau and very exposed, and most of the nearby stations are lower down and in heavily treed areas. Could this get looked at?

My station was reporting wrong data so I suspect that you have flagged it. All is now fixed but it seems that it is still flagged. I update with rapid fire(3min) but you only update every 14 minutes on your side? The station does not show up on the map like all the other stations in the area.

I found the satellite view as your picture - when I switched from terrain to satellite view, my station appeared - when I switch back to terrain view, it now shows (but the station a few miles from me has now disappeared).

I don't know what's going on with your Wundermap AFA stations disappearing / reappearing (erroneous readings aside). Apparently the zoom level has something to do with it, as the Danville airport disappeared a while back, but I see by zooming in it shows.

Nope - still not showing up - I haven't figured out how to get the satellite view you show in your picture to see if it shows up there. I'm using the "regular" (topographical?) view on Wundermap, and I'm still not showing up.
When I hit the icon in the upper right corner of the map, it gives me a drop-down list of weather stations, and I'm also not showing up on that list.

It looks like I'm now back up and running - I appear on the Wundermap again.

My date / time on my receiver are / were correct.

Last night AcuRite (or more accurately, AcuLink) apparently went down for 8 hours or more (the system I'm using).
I also got a WU e-mail again this morning at around 2 am stating my station was offline - it appears that was the result of AcuLink doing system maintenance and not forwarding my data to Weather Underground?

I'm also tweaking the settings on my station based on:
1. A station a few blocks away (which appears to be a bit off?).
2. Our local airport (which my readings matched, but the airport has also disappeared).
3. The Weather Channel desktop app.
4. A local weather web site.
5. Stuck a temp / humidity gauge next to my weather station - it seems I had to adjust the reported percentages a bit based on all of the above.

thanks for the reply. with regards to the emails, perhaps a setting can be made available where the user can elect to not receive QC emails. If implemented, it should be defaulted to 'not receive' emails so there is effectively no change to the status quo, but if someone is dropping off the map, they can then flick this on and be notified.

by making it opt-in the mails can be more 'noisy' and verbose.

In addition, and if I may suggest, it would be nice to go to the weather station configuration page and view some sort of log that gave me some idea what was going on with incoming data. Having access to that information would could give me some ability to take action and make corrections.

The latest chrome that auto installs. I have just checked again. All my data from yesterday that was fine at the time, is now reading as a mishmash of degrees Fahrenheit with C beside them. e.g. In the table showing highs and lows for yesterday its posting a high of 73.4 deg C which would correctly convert to the reported high of ~22degC

All the graphs are then crazy high as well. With corresponding crazy lows. I also just tried in the latest build of Internet explorer and the same thing happens.

I have set wunderground to default to metric measurements when I'm logged into my account, such as now.

If I could paste a picture I could easily show this to you.

What is also interesting, is that If I navigate to a previous day then BACK to the current day, the bug persists, all of the historical correct data for today is now reading as the strange mismash of Fahrenheit -C whilst the current as of the last update from the station data is correctly showing as Deg C at sane values.

This is the page that I am using to do this.

I can reproduce this bug in the latest Internet explorer as well.

Pishnagambo, I have emailed you so you can attach images and screenshots easier. I would like to better understand the problem so we can try to fix it!

Thanks,
Kari

I added a weather station (ID DEWILMI40) on July 19. The station still isn't on the PWS list, though it does appear on Wundermap. My reported data is pretty consistent with nearby stations. Can you help?

This is a great question and something we have put a lot of thought into. A long time ago, we sent emails to PWS owners when their station was flagged by our QC. But the PWS owners would complain that they were getting too many emails, because they weren't concerned with fixing their sensor. So we stopped the emails. However, I think we should get the emails back up and running, in a smarter way. If the station doesn't usually get flagged, or if the station hasn't been flagged in a long time, then send an email. If the station failed QC recently and an email was sent, then don't send another email. This is tricky so we'll put a lot of thought into the logic before launching a new email system for our QC process.

As for your second question, the station doesn't need to be resubmitted to get it back on the map. If the station is reporting a temperature within reason, it will automatically get added back to the wundermap.

Thanks,
Kari

thanks for the reply. with regards to the emails, perhaps a setting can be made available where the user can elect to not receive QC emails. If implemented, it should be defaulted to 'not receive' emails so there is effectively no change to the status quo, but if someone is dropping off the map, they can then flick this on and be notified.

by making it opt-in the mails can be more 'noisy' and verbose.

if a station is flagged and subsequently removed from the map, is there notification to the user or a way to see that it is because of QC issues and exactly what the issues were?

subsequently, is there a way to resubmit the station for renewed qc testing once the issue is resolved?

I have noticed a very serious and reproducible issue. I am using metric measurements. However when I look at the previous days data on my PWS it is reporting Fahrenheit temps with deg C beside the number. So its putting a C in yet its still in Fahrenheit and not doing the conversion.

I have verified that its not my station by looking at historical data. The error occurs as soon as it rolls over to a new day. All previous values which were correct suddenly become MUCH higher. Im assuming because they get stored as Fahrenheit and converted on the fly to view. In this case the conversion is not happening properly and Im getting reported highs of 75 Deg C ! Instead of 23 deg c which is the correct value.

Big Coppitt Key Gulfside KFLKEYWE18 is no longer listed, I've checked the temp reading with other thermometers and they are all the same. I could adjust it down but feel I would be tampering with the data.

It looks like your station is currently reporting 95, whereas the nearby airport is 89 degrees. Your station may be trending to warm. Keep an eye on it and see how it does at different times of the day. I will add this station to my list to keep a watch on it.

Apparently 2 stations in Ravenna , Ohio has slipped through the cracks. They have been reporting dew points in the mid to upper 80's when in reality it's in the upper 60's. I think the stations are Black horse and King Street. My station Ravenna 1E is right in line with surrounding station, while the 2 mentioned above are WAY out of line. Those 2 stations should be red flagged until they recalibrate there sensors.

Unfortunately, while all variables go through our QC process, only bad temperature readings will get removed from the wundermap. We are currently working to improve our QC process so wind speed/direction, dewpoint, pressure, etc will be included in the QC process. In the meantime, I will send a message to the PWS owners asking them to check their sensors.

You can contact the station owner yourself with messages like this by viewing the blue "i" next to the station name on the PWS history page.

Thanks,
Kari
