Problems finding your station on the wundermap or station list?

Hi PWS owners!

If your station is reporting just fine but you cannot find your station on the wundermap or the station list, it is probably getting flagged and removed by our QC process. We have to sanity check all of the data that comes in from our personal weather stations, to ensure we are displaying reasonable data on our map. However, occasionally some things slip through the cracks, like some erroneous data appearing on the wundermap or accurate data being removed from the wundermap. This is because we have to compare the temperature at your station to nearby stations, to validate the data. If the temperature at your station is significantly warmer or cooler than nearby stations, it will get flagged by the QC algorithm and removed from the map and the station list. But when coastal or elevation influences are present, the temperature may actually vary significantly. It is very hard to capture these real temperature differences, this is why we have been working so hard to improve our QC algorithm.

We should be launching the new QC process this week, and hope to reduce the cases where accurate stations are removed from the station list and the wundermap. Alternatively, we may see some other problems that arise. We know that whenever you try to fix one problem, other problems become more obvious. So please comment here on this blog if your station wrongfully disappears from the station list and the wundermap. We will continue to tweak the QC algorithm to improve your experience.

Note that this is not an issue with the PWS dashboard error message that shows a red triangle with the message "This PWS is not reporting". This error message is because Weather Underground has not received recent data from this PWS. When this happens, you need to check your weather station software to make sure your Weather Underground station id and password are entered correctly. And also check your internet connection and power to the station.

Thanks for your feedback and support while we continue to improve the experience for our PWS owners. Please comment on this blog with any concerns or suggestions you may have.

Thanks,
Kari

Hello! My station (KMEWINTH3) is up and running, and displaying on the map. The only problem is that my town is incorrect in my station data listing on the wundermap. It should show Winthrop instead of East Winthrop. Thanks!

My station (KIDBOISE95) had problems and was reporting zeros for a wile. It has been removed from the map.
It's all working now, but hasn't shown back up on the map. Does the QC program eventually add the station back onto the map when it sees the data is sane again?

Thanks,

To answer my own question for other's help.
It seems the QC program does add stations back to the map after a few hours. Mine showed up and is visible again.

Yes, the station is added back to the map as soon as it passes QC again. Looks like yours is back on the map now!

Hello, I am having the problem with my station KCTCOLEB1 not showing up on the WunderMap. My location is a mountain ravine that is often colder than any other site around. As a matter of fact, we are often the coldest location in the state of CT. I note on my station page that we are in a ravine. I cross-check my reporting Davis VP2+ with a NetAtmo station also at my location. I attach screen captures taken within a few minutes of each other.
Thanks for your help.

Hi, our station disappears almost every night. We checked everything, station works perfect and reports perfect. So it is probably because of the difference with other stations in the area. We live in the coldest spot in the neighbourhood, because of geological conditions. The closest station in Benissa gets influenced by the sea, we are behind the hills, no contact with sea, lowest place in the valley, a real frosthole. Yes, this is Spain, the Costa Blanca: frosty nights, cold cold cold until the sun gets up. Difference in night-day temperature is huge. Many people in the village are disappointed because they want to check how cold it is! Can you please get us back on the map in cold nights!

My PWS, KNMCEDAR6, has been disappearing the last couple of days. It is updating but is not shown on the Wundermap. We live in mountains, on a ridge, and the temps may vary quite a bit, especially if there is no wind to stir things up. My car will report 10-15 degrees difference driving down hill 2 miles.

This has been happening fairly often, most frequently in the evening as my location's temperature drops much more rapidly than anywhere else in the area. As I write this (11/14 18:00 PST), KORPENDL21 is not on the map. It is currently reporting 9.2F while neighboring stations a few miles away are in the teens. If anything, KORPENDL21 is reporting a conservative figure -- it is lagging actual temperature by a few degrees as the cold pushes down the slope.

Hi there,
As you can imagine it is hard to properly QC these cold pool areas in complex terrain. We have tweaked our algorithm a bit in the last few weeks, so hopefully you no longer see this problem. Please let me know if it continues.

It looks like your station is back on the map. Are you still seeing this problem? Your station seems to have gone offline for a bit. This would have caused it to drop off the map and your widget wouldn't work if data isn't flowing.

Also make sure your Weather Underground station id and password are entered correctly on the "share my bridge" menu.

Hi, my station (KCASANTA147) disappeared from the wundermap again tonight. I live in an area that is very sensitive to coastal influence, elevation change, and direction of wind through mountain passes. During certain types of weather events, it's relatively common for stations within just a few miles to have temperatures that differ by 10+ deg F. Currently, my station is reporting 76.5 deg, and the closest neighbors are reporting 82 degF (KCASANTA119), and 68.5 degF (KCAGOLET5). The 82 deg reading and mine are not shown on the map. The 68.5 is.

It looks like your station is currently on the map and passing QC.
Your station data here.
The QC algorithm takes into account elevation by only comparing to stations within 300 feet elevation gain. Also, your station is being compared to many nearby stations. We calculate an average temperature from a handful of stations, and then allow stations to pass that are within a reasonable range from this average temperature. So it should not fail just because one nearby station reports significantly different from your station.

KCOFRANK4 is not showing up, and the data has been uploading properly. I'm another case where the topography has great effects on the readings between my location here and the surrounding stations: we are up on a high plateau and very exposed, and most of the nearby stations are lower down and in heavily treed areas. Could this get looked at?

I found the satellite view as your picture - when I switched from terrain to satellite view, my station appeared - when I switch back to terrain view, it now shows (but the station a few miles from me has now disappeared).

I don't know what's going on with your Wundermap AFA stations disappearing / reappearing (erroneous readings aside). Apparently the zoom level has something to do with it, as the Danville airport disappeared a while back, but I see by zooming in it shows.

It looks like your station is currently showing up on the wundermap for me. Are you still not able to see it?

Thanks,
Kari

Nope - still not showing up - I haven't figured out how to get the satellite view you show in your picture to see if it shows up there. I'm using the "regular" (topographical?) view on Wundermap, and I'm still not showing up.
When I hit the icon in the upper right corner of the map, it gives me a drop-down list of weather stations, and I'm also not showing up on that list.

Why does my station not show up on the BIG / main Wundermap? The Schoolfield Area station (KVADANV17) shows up (he's a few miles from me), but mine disappeared about 4 days ago.

I always seem to show up on the maps on individual station pages, but not the main page map.

Yep, your data looks great. Looks like your station is showing up on the map and passing QC.

Thanks,
Kari

my station report fine , just dont see the icon in that map

I see the problem. It looks like your data is not reporting consistently every 15 mins (as what is usual for an AcuRite station). Please check your AcuBridge connection and possibly contact AcuRite support if the problem persists. Also, please let me know if you have any success.
