Launched Enhancements to the PWS Dashboard!

We’ve listened to your feedback, and enhancements to the PWS experience have launched!

You can view your data on this new page by going to the PWS Dashboard:

http://www.wunderground.com/personal-weather-stat ion/dashboard?ID=[ insert PWS ID ]

The biggest difference you’ll see is that we’ve improved the navigation of the PWS Dashboard. Now you can see all of your real-time data in the same location as your history data. The history date-picker has been streamlined, as well, and you might recognize that it more closely matches the functionality of the old weather history pages. We’ve also brought back the “next” and “previous” buttons. These work the same way as the old weather history page — if you’re on daily mode, you can go to the next or previous day. If you’re on weekly mode, you can go to the next or previous week, and so on.

Many PWS owners asked us to include the PWS locations on the map, which we have done in this new version. The page will also remember which tab you prefer — if you have a webcam and would rather see that when you visit the page, we will save that preference for when you come back.

In addition to bug fixes, the graphs have been improved to include the timestamp in the line that follows your mouse across the screen. When you select “monthly mode” or “yearly mode” on the graphs, we now show you the highs and lows for the day, instead of the average temperature.

We still have a couple of improvements and bug fixes to make. The most notable of these is that we will be adding solar and UV data to the daily mode table within the next few days. We will continue to improve the dashboard over the coming months, so please contribute your feedback here!

Thanks,
Kari

Why does my precipitation rate show as "-999.00 in/hr"?

I had this same problem. I fixed it by not using Rapid Fire and just uploading with the normal ULR.

Isn't it about time for an update to the PWS Dashboard? It's been more than six weeks and there are still several significant outstanding issues. The comments in this blog are a good source of the currently open issues.

Thanks Kari for this very valuable blog. Why doesnt Wunderground forces all PWS to comply with World Meteorological Organization standards? For example, wind meter should be located 10m above ground (or adjust any site with different height to this equivalent elevation)?? Same goes for weather parameters sampling rate (mean wind sampling rate is every 10 minutes per WMO), etc. etc.

I think, perhaps, you're not understanding the concept of Personal Weather Station. This is not a network of professionally maintained weather devices collecting data for commercial purposes. These are stations at people's homes or other areas collecting data for personal use. These data are provided to Weather Underground freely. "Forcing" them to comply with international standards would be exceptionally difficult. I for one would not be interested in building a 10m tower to place an anemometer on. It sits on the roof of my house. I would also not be interested in cutting all of the trees in the area down so that the collected data is not compromised.

I'm sorry if the data collected from personal weather stations does not meet your expectations but I'm certain that there are myriad other WMO compliant commercial services that do.

32 points wind-rose graph for wind direction and speed is badly needed for daily, monthly, annual and global periods with a 5% occurrence minimal division. The actual wind speed/direction graph used in Wunderground is not so useful nor it is any good for wind design considerations

I, too, have wondered why the "PWS viewed XXXX times since ..." count seems so inflated. If I'm looking at my PWS page and simply reload the page, the count goes up by 3. How is this count calculated?
I have noticed the count to increase greatly over a period of only an hour or so if I left a tab of my browser pointing to my own page, and not if I didn't. I suspect that in the current implementation routine handshaking between the website and a computer needed in order to refresh things like updating temperatures gets counted as additional viewings.

I pay to employ a page counter on web pages I create myself, and the service provides the setting it calls "idle time between visits" which at user option can be set to various values between 30 minutes and one week, with the service suggesting values between one and six hours. The counter does not increment for shorter revisit times.

Possibly the count displayed here would be more useful to us with the implementation of something like this by Wunderground.  (not the user option for a specific time--just the idea of not counting a new handshake for a temperature update as an additional viewing).

Karl,

The red triangle that says "This PWS is not reporting" means Weather Underground has not received any data from this station. Please make sure your weather station software is correctly communicating with Weather Underground and that your Weather Underground station id and password are entered correctly in your weather station software.

Thanks,

Karl, Thank you for the reply. I did verify the login and password with the same result.

The weather station is reporting data, is uploading data to my graphs, and is visible on the Wundermap. However, even though the dashboard says "Current Conditions: Station Reported 3 Seconds Ago" it still has a red triangle below the current conditions statement that says PWS not reporting (even though it obviously is reporting data). See the screen shot attached in my photos (KVAWOODB15)

If my description is clearer, I have two remaining questions:

1, Why is the red triangle there and why is it covering my radar block?

2. Why does the dashboard continue to default back to a random date in May?

I am happy to hear anyone's suggestions.

Thank you in advance,
Max

Thank you for the great improvements. I been monitoring the new dashboard over the last month and only have a few items to note:

1. During storms, I noticed that the "Precip Accum" data does not auto update like temp, wind, direction. I have to manually refresh the page in order for the Precip Accum data to show the latest figure. Would be nice if it did auto update like the rest of the fields.

2. When viewing weekly, monthly, etc stats, it would be great if the table for low/high/wind etc would show you the date when that 'record' occurred. I know I can browser the graphs and attempt to find it but it would be a great item to see min/max with the date on the table.

3. The weekly, monthly, yearly stats should correspond to current week, current month, current year. So if one wants to review data for each month they can choose the monthly option and have m/m or y/y stats. If you keep it as is then the field name should be changed to 7-day View, 30-day view, and 365 day view. Having a "Monthly" option yet showing 30-day view is not accurate and confusing to others. It is also against the industry standard where such terms are used.

Hi,
smth happened to my station and my rain summary for yesterday (June 30) and for whole June is highly wrong. I deleted those bad points in my data table, but summary remained unchanged. Could any site admin fix this and change daily rain for June 30 to 11.7mm (+ eventually monthly rain to 43,0 mm) ?

Many of us have crash-landed into this, and trying to figure it all out. I had a similar issue, due to my internet going down for a few hours. I'm under the impression we have to use an optional software solution that will catch things up, or even a hardware solution---all depending on the station used.

As for your agriculture sensors, you are only sending us solar radiation. We will need to talk to Rainwise to see why your other data is not coming through.

Webcam is working, only because I had to create a new one at Wunderground. The webcam that WAS displaying suddenly went into a "not active" status. By creating a new one, it started working.

The agriculture data is showing up in a Rainwise Excel spreadsheet download from Rainwise. It is showing up at their website and locally via the weather sensor station. I have left a note to their support mail support. Just not making it to y'all.

In my case, I am having successful test uploads to underground's ftp server acknowledged by "successful" from them. I really haven't changed anything. And secondly, moving away from the FTP part of the discussion, wunderground now claims my camera is not active.

I'm not a net head, but something "is screwy in St. Louie..." as the old cartoon goes. It is like nobody is home.

I'm not sure who you were "user testing" but, as a current user, I'd like to request that this decision to be revisited. The "Monthly View" and "Yearly View" would seem to be most useful in comparing historic data, e.g. all of May to all of April or all of 2013 to all of 2012 or just all of 2014 to date. I don't think you typically hear about portions of multiple months or multiple years being being compared to each other. NOAA and state climatology departments seem to generally group data into whole months and whole years. Is WU trying to pioneer a new standard?

And, yes, you can do a "Custom" selection of dates, but this renders the "Previous" and "Next" buttons useless as you can't then scroll back and forth through months or years. Why not have traditional reporting as the default and, for those users that want something else, do the "Custom" selection.

I'm also wondering who they polled as part of their user testing. I propose that the new site be rebranded as "hipster.wunderground.com" and the classic site be kept as "person-with-a-brain.wunderground.com". Seriously, this whole form over function thing is ridiculous.

Something is screwy with wunderground's ftp server. I started having the same problem a few weeks ago. I am uploading my images to the ftp server. When I would connect to the server, I would get a timeout error and something about not being able to connect to port 5001. By accident, I found out that if I have ftp sessions that are very close together, then the next session will use port 5002, and so on. Because I was uploading at 5 minute-intervals, this was enough of a gap for my uploads to always use port 5001, but I found that this was the only problem port. So now I initiate two ftp connections. The first one I have run in the background as the sacrificial connection to port 5001, and then I immediately start a second ftp session which will upload successfully using port 5002.

Could you explain how the "Precip Rate" entry is calculated for display? I assume it must be averaged over a different time period from what my weather software provides via Rapid Fire updates. For example, during a recent afternoon thunderstorm, my software was uploading a rainfall rate approaching 6 inches/hour; yet, WU was displaying somewhere around 0.9 inches/hour.

Neighbors who used to use your website were interested in "how hard" it's raining when these really intense summer thunderstorms hit. They end up being disappointed when WU shows a much lower rate from what they intuitively know to be the case. Good for me though I guess, they end up bookmarking my personal website where I constantly update the current rainfall rate.

Just had a thunderstorm pass over my rapid fire weather station. I had classic and the new site loaded side-by-side. The classic view updates the precipitation accumulation automatically, but the new site only updates the precip rate, not the accumulation. You have to reload the whole page to get the updated accumulation. This is the same thing that was happening with the wind speed. Hard to believe that you can't fix something so simple.

Rapid Fire is sometimes refreshed once an hour.

And my webcam has stopped refreshing. I have not changed anything. My last webcam image was 22 hours ago.

Ok, the changes are an improvement, but there are some major issues. First of all the feedback button does not work on my iPad. Next, the different views appear to have been designed by someone who has never compared statistics with NWS statistics. When in monthly mode, there is no way to get a true monthly view. When I pick monthly mode and a date, it gives me the 30 days preceding the date I selected, not a true view of a month. For example, if I choose monthly mode and a date of June 1, I get data starting on May 2 through May 31. Give me a break, the way it used to work before your changes is the way it should work. The way is works now, for me to find total precip for May, I have to get out a pencil and paper and do the calculations manually using two different views of the data. The same comments apply to yearly view as well.

User testing has showed us that most people prefer to see the previous 30 days. You can still see the true monthly view by selecting the custom dates option and choosing May 1st thru May 31st for example.

MUCH BETTER!

Pleased to see that everything on the page is now working properly and our Rapid Fire updates are being logged and reported accurately! :o)

Overall, I think you guys did a great job of listening to the community, and this latest design captures nearly everything that I would want to see on our station page.

Only data point (s) I would like to still see displayed would be the rainfall total for the month and for the season.

Hope you can get that added at some point. These have never been offered before, and I was really hoping that they would be with this new design.

Cheers.

I like the page format, but most of the time page will not fully load. At least 80% of the time. I have this same problem on two other machines. Any ideas why?

You've done a great job improving the Dashboard! I really like it a lot. Thank you for all the hard work. Dave, KCAMOREN7

Howdy, am delighted that the dashboard now supports RAPIDFIRE... However the webcam does not. If the webcam also supported RAPIDFIRE, everything would nearly be complete.

Also, if we could get the extra sensors for agriculture to work. My Rainwise station is uploading agriculture data, but Wunderground is not processing it for display.

Solar:
Soil Moisture:
Soil Temp:
Leaf Wetness

My Wunderground station is here:

Why does my precipitation rate show as "-999.00 in/hr"?

Is there a reason I can't save my Wundermap settings when it's launched from the PWS page? I always want to see my Favorite Locations, Storm Tracks, Tornado and Lightning on the map. I have to set these every time I launch Wundermap from the PWS page even after saving the settings. The settings are forgotten of the radar map is refreshed as well.

I have no problems saving the settings for Wundermap from the normal Forcast page.
