Jan. 20th
Our somewhat warmer temps are going to be a thing of the past starting this evening when a strong arctic front sweeps throug and temps will plummet and we may not see any recovery for quiet a while.Although slight and brief warmup by weekend, but then another cold front late Sunday.
Today's front may be accompanied by some snow showers or squalls.Watching some snow for late tomorrow and tomorrow night, but the heaviest appears to be south coast and SE Mass, depending on the track.

Jan.21st
so it looks like models have zeroed in on the coming storm.6-10 inches in the boston area and close to a foot or more on cape cod and the islands and SE Mass where there are blizzard warnings posted. So this will be a quick hitter, and luckily the worst will be during the night, but commuting tomorrow morning will be hazardous. After this storm goes by it will bring in some extreme cold.Winter is here to stay for a while.

Jan.22nd

After an initial burst between 5 pm and 9 pm,got 2 maybe 3 inches, little snow after that for my area. All the big totals to the south of me.Some areas picking up over a foot of snow. But light fluffy snow,so easy to clear. So now we prepare for the cold and it will be cold!!!!

Jan.23rd
Pretty much the rest of January is going to be below normal. No change in the weather pattern, with strong high pressure in the west, and trough in the east which keeps getting energized every few days.

Jan.24th
More of the same cold and a couple of week waves moving through Sat. and on Monday.Watching a coastal system on Wed. and Thurs. Not sure how close this will be on the coast.

I would be remiss if I didn't mention the passing of a long time local newscaster Chet Curtis who passed away yesterday from pancreatic cancer at the age of 74.
He and his wife both did the news broadcasting together for many years here in Boston. What was so endearing was he came across as a nice guy and from all the people who have talked about him since his passing is that he was that way in real life. With our journalists and media people having problems with their big egos, its nice to see someone attain such fame even if its just local, but still be an average human being outside of the media. He and Natalie were quite a pair, they did divorce about 14 yrs ago.

The event on Saturday, looks minor, but with these fronts that come through, there will be pockets of moderate snow at times.
Some areas will have a dusting, while other areas will be an inch or two.More arctic air coming in on Sunday.

Crazy contrast in weather from the west to the east.
Record highs are being broken each day in the west, while brutal windchills and temps continue day after day in the east.I sense the break in the pattern is coming, but not for another week.Things are going to start moving sometime around the middle of Feb.

LT,yeh your right, its just a strange pattern that we're locked into,no change for such a long time.I can't help but get the feeling when this breaks down, its going to swing the other way big time.

Hi NEw, yeah looks that way, but as I and Pcroton have been talking about there is no negative or even neutral NAO, you need that for true East Coast development, of say a Miller A blockbuster storm.

All indications are the next arctic outbreak is going to surge all the way down into the gulf of Mexico, including southern Texas and down through Florida. With an active storm pattern as well on the east coast.

LT,I think I need a break from winter, which I think I'll only get if I jump a plane to Aruba.
Jus,no I didn't get much at all,but about 20 miles south of me had 15-18 inches.Crazy storm.

Oh you didn't get much at all! My relatives on LI are stuck at home (or didn't want to drive in it again after yesterday's nightmare ride home for them)

I see your temps though...we're about the same at 10 degrees here.

Have a good one!

Best of luck up your way! I have my concerns for bust potential NE of Boston, but I think the metropolitan area on southeastward should be fine.

Hi,Jus,was going to drop into your blog, right now expecting 6-10,although I just saw they upped cape cod to 12-18 inches,so they may up ours too, this may become bigger than they originally thought these ocean storms tend to explode when they hit the water.
Yeh,saw the Chicago shootout, shootouts ok as long as your winning them.
As far as the Patriots,I'm impressed they got that far. They just were hit with so many major injuries to key players,I didn't see them get this far.

Hi NEw, did you expect this big of a storm? Not many of my relatives were expecting it out there. 6-10 inches and then the cold is going to make for difficult clean up. The salt doesn't work well at those deep cold temps.
Sorry about the Patriots. And, wonder if you saw the shootout with Boston and the Hawks the other day. I thought of you. Lots of shootouts for the Hawks, ugh...

THIS HAZARDOUS WEATHER OUTLOOK IS FOR NORTHERN CONNECTICUT...
CENTRAL MASSACHUSETTS...EASTERN MASSACHUSETTS...NORTHEASTERN
MASSACHUSETTS...SOUTHEASTERN MASSACHUSETTS...WESTERN
MASSACHUSETTS...SOUTHERN NEW HAMPSHIRE AND NORTHERN RHODE ISLAND.

.DAY ONE...TODAY AND TONIGHT.

THERE IS A LOW PROBABILITY OF A FEW MODERATE TO HEAVY SNOW SHOWERS
THIS AFTERNOON AND EVENING. THIS COULD CAUSE BRIEF REDUCTIONS IN
VISIBILITY AND LOCALIZED SNOW COVERED ROADWAYS.

.DAYS TWO THROUGH SEVEN...TUESDAY THROUGH SUNDAY.

LATE TUESDAY INTO WEDNESDAY...LIGHT SNOWFALL IS AWAY FROM THE
COAST. LIGHT ACCUMULATIONS ARE EXPECTED...THOUGH THERE COULD BE A
FEW INCHES ALONG THE COAST FROM BOSTON NORTH TO CAPE ANN. BLUSTERY
NORTH TO NORTHEAST WINDS WILL CAUSE THE SNOW TO BLOW AND DRIFT.
ROADWAYS MAY BECOME SLICK...ESPECIALLY ON UNTREATED SURFACES...AND
VISIBILITY MAY BE LOW AT TIMES.

AS THE SNOW ENDS WEDNESDAY NIGHT...THE COMBINATION OF BLUSTERY
NORTHERLY WINDS AND ARCTIC CHILL WILL YIELD WIND CHILL VALUES OF
-15 TO -20 DEGREES ACROSS INTERIOR SOUTHERN NEW ENGLAND...MAINLY
DURING THE PRE DAWN HOURS OF THURSDAY MORNING. HIGH CONFIDENCE.

Looking at temperature profiles across the northeast, the drop off is pretty dramatic.Places like Watertown, NY and and Northern,NY into Northern Vermont, are in the low teens or single numbers.A pretty good batch of flurries and squalls are accompanying the front, and are in western Mass, and in Vermont currently.

So there are some indications that our system tomorrow, may bring more snow to our area than expected, but we've all seen things fluctuate right up until the day of the storm,so as with every storm,we'll wait and see tomorrow. It will definitely be a different texture of snow than on saturday, which was all water. This will be extremely fluffy and easy to move.

All eyes will be watching our coastal storm for late tomorrow.Right now expected to be pretty far south,so SE Mass,Cape Cod and the islands and along the south coast of Conn. and RI.,but track will be everything. After our surprise 3 inches of heavy wet snow on Saturday,I'm not leaving any options off the table. What is definite is a very long period of extreme cold and possibly stormy weather will be here.
