winter feel
Posted by: NEwxguy, 2:13 PM GMT on March 12, 2013 +0
March 15th,
Took my evening fast walk and it felt like I had dropped back into January.Wind chills were in the teens.I was wrapped up like Mid-January and when I was walking into the wind it was painful.Winds were gusting over 20,and with temps in the mid 20's,it was not pleasant.Need to send out the search part for spring.Yesterday morning I saw a Robin in my back yard,he's got to be thinking,he should have stayed south for a couple more weeks.Below normal weather is expected right through next week.

March 14th
Won't go into any long explanation about the AO/NAO many explanations on the internet, but for New England in the winter it usually means colder than normal, and that is what we have right now.Our days in the 50 are a distant memeory as we do have a negative AO/NAO pattern, that may last through the month of March.Eventhough we are running above normal it doesn't seem like it,but due to the fact the days that have been above normal have been much above,it pushes the monthly average above norma.
For storm systems we have a weak one on Saturday which may bring a small accumulation on grassy surfaces, but since it is occuring during the day it should be warm enough where pavements will just be wet.A bigger system on Monday night into Tuesday night, but right now leaning toward a warmer system.

March 13th
Enjoy today people here in New England, cold air moving back in tonight and will be generally below normal temps for the foreseeable future,as we move back into a blocking pattern with a trough over the east and series of systems moving through the pattern. This time of year with the higher sun angle any system moving through the day,has a hard time generating any snow accumulations, unless you get very heavy precip.A small system on Saturday should give us light snow or mix, doesn't look any thing to worry about, next week will be the big system, and without a lot of arctic air to feed on,this will be mostly a wet system, but we'll have to wait on this one.

March 12th
Above 50 yesterday and again today, but don't get use to it,as winter is still going to return.Much colder weather setting in for Thursday into the weekend. Mostly dry weather ahead, but possible small system Saturday night, with chance of light snow or mix.
The big question will come mid next week.Indications of a major system, but at this point not sure of how this system will evolve. Will be watching this as the days progress.

I was out yesterday. I had the enjoyable time having a colonoscopy.Happily nothing showed up.Always that worry that they will find something.Cancer is everywhere and we all know so many people that have had it.Certainly in my circle of family and friends there is an alarming number of people,so that worry in your mind is always there,so it is a relief when checkups come up clean.
There procedure is so quick and easy, the prep,is the worst part.
So we have warm and eventually rainy day ahead then a cold front passes late tonight and we slowly drop into a cold spell and the pattern sets up again as a stormy unsetteled pattern as the negative NAO blocking reinserts itself. A small system over the weekend, but we have to watch closely next week as a major storm moves through the country with snow, severe weather and flodding rains. We'll just have to wait and see how this evolves for us,but with the blocking in place any storminess will not move out quickly.

I've decided not to complain about New England weather,I've decided this ain't such a bad place to live after all.We thought our mosquito problems were bad.

According to entomologists at the University of Florida, a swarm of “Mega Mosquitoes” is set to invade central Florida this summer.

The mega mosquitoes are technically called gallinippers. But when they’re attacking you, their proper name is probably the least of your concerns because they’re 20 times bigger than regular mosquitoes, and their bites really hurt. The above photo shows the difference in size between a regular mosquito and a gallinipper.

The gallinippers could hatch this summer, because of the flood waters caused by tropical storms. Usually their eggs just stay underground, and don’t all hatch at the same time. But when the water pushes them above ground, they hatch.

The scientists say you can keep them off of you with strong bug spray and by covering yourself up as much as possible. Have a great vacation!

Good Afternoon, NEw!

Major kudos to you for keeping up with your colo-rectal health! Glad that your roto-rooter special showed no signs of potential trouble! Hubby and I keep up on such things ourselves and I, too, am due to have another one this summer. Unfortunately, my GI specialist also wants to include an endoscopy to check out my upper esophageal region at the same time! ARGH! Hopefully, I'll be completely sedated throughout, as I know my nerves won't last while he goes from stem to stern! LOL!

Both sides of my family/relatives have been plagued and/or lost to various forms of either cancer or heart disease so, understandably, we surviving members all realize the necessity of any/all important precautionary tests.

************************************************* ****************************

Thankfully, our yard is, once again, miraculously free from residual snow but not from resulting broken small tree limbs or twigs. I can't explain why our property seems to melt snow much faster than our neighbors, but I am grateful nonetheless. It's a relief that our current warmer temps (54F) will allow only rainfall later today rather than other dreaded forms . I realize how problematic heavy rains may be for those with many remaining inches of snow but, hopefully, their nearby drains or areas will be clear enough to alleviate or absorb most of the heavy overflow. It wasn't that many years ago when we were under such a seige, ourselves, and had to man the pumps or wetvac. May we can all escape from such a recurrence in the weeks ahead!

Hope this weekend's drop to below average temps and potential for a rain/snow mix doesn't bring more unwelcomed challenges to Mass. or its coastlines. Sad how two Plum Island homes were completely demolished and about 11 others were completely condemned. I have some fond memories of the once lovely dunes and beaches of that area from decades ago and it seems that's all many will have after this horrific season.

Hi NEw and Mass, Yeah, isn't the colo prep horrible? I have just reached the age when I don't apparently need to have them any more and I am thrilled. Mass, the endoscopy should be a piece of cake; you will indeed be sedated and won't remember a thing nor feel anything. Hope it all goes well for you. Both of you are to be congratulated for taking care of yourselves even when it is not the most fun thing in the world. It's only a short unpleasantness and then you have more peace of mind. Kind of like mammograms: a pain but a short one and totally worth it.

On better subjects, loved the moist warmth today, makes my hair curl up a little, and much of the snow around here is gone, though not all. Love hearing the mourning doves. The little volunteer tree on my deck, now just a bit taller than me, has broken its buds ever so slightly and next there will be a bit of green! Yay!

Hi,Mass,I agree with bot of you,its better to get things checked than let something horrible progress to the point of know return.
Crazy day here at work so didn't get out to feel some of this warmth. By the time I leave today,Im sure the heavy rains will be here. Looking at radar they are on our doorstep. All the snow is gone from the streets so blocked storm drains won't be an issue. The moderate danger are the small streams that are alredy swollen from the snow melt, but hopefully this band of rain will move through fast enough to hold any flooding to a minimum.
Hope both of you are doing well.

Good Afternoon, NEw and SHE!

Seems that dousing of rainfall last night didn't last as long as originally anticipated and helped to melt much of the residual snow around here. It sure doesn't hurt having our temps lie in the low to mid-fifties range (even last evening) as an assist. Our basement's well contains a bit of water but nothing to worry about. We have our sump pump hooked up just in case.

Not thrilled about our weekend looking colder and iffy by Saturday, but hope it remains warm enough to bring more rain than any accompanying sleet or snow mix. I haven't had a chance to check yet but hope that, this Sunday's St. Patty's Day, will allow us to do a happier jig. LOL! One can only hope! In any event, hubby and I are planing on going out for a traditional Irish Corned Beef and Cabbage dinner to celebrate. We need a pleasant change up from a most tiresome winter routine.

Hope you manage to get through your hard working "Hump Day" and, before day's end, can take in some of this milder better weather before it takes another downward turn by week's end! Can't wait till warmer air sticks around so we can all get in some much needed fresh air and sunshine.

HI,Mass,
I subscribe to a Blog that originates in the UK and he usually talks about weather patterns, and according to him it looks like our negative AO/NAO pattern which brings us our colder and stormier pattern is going to hang around the rest of the month. So I wouldn't get out the tshirts and floppies just yet.Since last year was so above normal,I guess it only makes sense that this year would flip the other way.

Hi again, NEw!

You are so wise to subscribe to a UK or European weather blog, as the Europeans have it all over us by having invested in better or advanced technology to accurately forecast global or U.S. weather models.

I happened to have watched a news program (PBS?) recently which backed this statement up by showing how accurate the European Weather Models were when predicting Hurricane Sandy's track. Our American Models showed her heading more out to sea, while the European Models were right on the money by showing her to be taking a left hook into the New York and New Jersey areas. The rest is history.

Glad that European meteorologists still care enough to share their advanced technologies with us and that American METS are now relying more on them than ours when forecasting!! We have a lot of catching up to do!

Hi,Mass, your so right. The ECMWF has outperformed our US models all winter including Sandy. Now when I look at the model discussions, most of them lean toward the European models with a small percentage of the US models added.
I would hope we make some changes to improve our models.

The good news with the next big storm on Tuesday, the wind component may not be e or NE much,so the beach erosion should be at a minimum.Lets hope not, shoreline can't take any more.Plum island is tearing down a lot of houses at this point and several more are right on the brink.

Good Afternoon, NEw!

Hopefully, yesterday's eye checkup showed no negative changes to your vision, and those miserable dilation drops have worn off by now! They sure make one look wide-eyed and bushy-tailed despite feeling to the contrary! LOL! I'm glad you posted about your eye checkup, as it reminded me that I need to soon make one for hubby as well. Boy, these days, time and appointment tracking easily escape me.

Seems we've sadly slipped back into March's miserable monotony of cold and raw for awhile. Yesterday, it almost seemed surreal to see our livingroom's thermostat read 75F degrees solely due to the warmth of solar rays entering through closed window panes. Always happy, too, when we can catch a break on those monthly winter fuel costs.

Have you checked into what the European weather models or other sources have to say about the beginning of April or is that too far in advance? I hope all sources yield a dramatic change for the better, as my old aching bones can't wait to completely thaw out!

Mass,I can remember how little fuel we used last year, twice as much this year.
Right now indications this cooler than normal pattern will extend into early April, but really too far in advance, things will change between now and then.
Eye checkup was excellent. So all my checkups were clean so I figure I got another 20 or 30 years ahead of me.

so every winter it seems we get mice in our atic and the seem to congregate above our family room ceiling and a little disturbing to hear the scratching going on above your head.So called in exterminators we use and they put stuff up there where they eat it and then go outside looking for water and then die outside supposedly. The problem I think one of them died somewhere down our cellar and a couple of days ago, this smell started filling our house. They came back and think there is a dead mouse somewhere and should go away in a few days,in the meantime gave something to spray to help the smell.

You know, NEw, you're not alone in attempting to combat pesky mice or other critters that somehow make their way into those hard to reach, final resting places in our homes. Understandably, it's difficult for anyone to become accustomed to their prancin' footsteps while alive ... let alone, the smell of their decay once gone. I only hope your pest controllers can rid you of this problem without the use of dangerous chemicals, as that becomes even more problematic.

You know, whenever I hear of stories such as this, I begin to hear that ole time TV theme song start playin' in my head. I guess it's obvious I've been down on the farm too long. LOL!

Lol,classic show and classic theme song, just about anyone our age could sing that song.
Anyone who owns a home knows its a continuous battle to keep out critters and all those small crawly things that want to invade our homes.

I almost forgot to send out congratulations to all my catholic friends on the election of your new pope.Cardinal Jorge Mario Bergoglio. From everything I've read about him,he should be an inspiration to all.Hes concerns seem to be centered with the poor and destitute in our world, who for the most part are ignored,as most of us look the other way.Good luck to him trying to inspire a world that is splintered almost beyond repair.

Good Morning, NEw and Happy TGIF Ides of March!

Your post above concerning last night's evening walk has you sounding like you've adopted the mailman or courier's: "Neither snow nor rain nor gloom of night stays this (walker) from swift completion of his appointed rounds." No wonder you're in such reasonably good shape with such a strong constitution towards the elements!

This sad-sack, (me) remained indoors with hubby, sweatered-up, while listening to those 25 mph chilly winds howling outside. My days of daily outdoor walks sadly ended some time ago, but hopefully normal spring/summer weather will bring back some impetus to become more physically active again. Arthritically aching joints are certainly not helped by just pills or a sedentary nature.

Hard to believe that it's now mid-March and our temps have reverted to the wintry mid-twenties. If this keeps up, many people will feel compelled to celebrate this St. Patty's Day, much earlier by dancin' wild Irish jigs and/or drinkin' plenty of liquid spirits just to stay warm! LOL! In any event, I hope you're TGIF goes without pending gloom or doom, St. Patty's Day weekend is an enjoyably relaxing one and, when walking outside, may all winds be at your back!

Erin Go Bragh!

Mass, thanks for providing a good laugh.I will do my best to make it through this day. Each day is such a struggle.
I've made it my promise exception for rain or blizzard I make it for my walk. Its important to me to stay healthy.I put music in my ears and the walk is healthy, but also good for my stress relief. Its so relaxing when I walk, although with a night like last night I find myself quickening the pace to get back home.
