So we have more snow predicted. In fact we are in a very stormy pattern, and several storm systems in our future. The first this weekend.A coastal storm moving south of new england will send a shield of snow up to southern areas.Heaviest SE and eastern sections, possibly 3-6 inches.Models are really fighting this one,so this go be more out to sea or send moderate snow into our area, won't know for certain until tomorrow.Another system mid week and another next weekend. In between bouts of artic air.So anyone thinking about spring, better just put it on hold for the rest of February,as the pattern will not allow any type of spring weather.Enjoy today as it may hit 50.

Happy Valentines Day!!!
Quiet weather for this special day.
Fairly mild weather ahead until Sunday when Artic air comes rushing in.some light snow on Saturday.More storminess next week. And the long range outlook has most of February having several artic outbreaks and storminess. This could be the first month in a long time that finishes below normal.

So I am back, left work yesterday shortly after arriving, not feeling well at all.I think my weekend of snow clearing caught up to me.A day of rest did wonders and feeling much better today.
On a weather note, weather has been kind of nice, perfect additional snow clearing, something my city refuses to do,and roads still remain half the width of normal.
I suspect they used most of their budget for snow removal if not all and can't afford to use anymore in case of any additional storms.
A quick hitting snow event tonight, but this should be mostly along the southern part of new england and only a couple inches, our storm for the weekend is gone, except for a small clipper on saturday with a little light snow.
Next potential large storm next week midweek, and too far away to even really talk about at this point.
Feb.12th
Happy Birthday to Mr. Lincoln
Not a holiday, but nice to remember one our great presidents that help to shape the country we now have.
Our recovery is still ongoing,in my town they are doing nothing,so roads are still very narrow and snow piles continue to make street corners hazardous at best. And now a new hazard is making itself known. Huge holes in the road pavement are showing up,so one has to be alert. Some of these holes could do some serious damage if hit a high rate of speed.
Expecting a little snowfall tonight, but a few inches south of boston is expected. Our weekend storm is becoming less likely except for a little light snow on Saturday and Saturday night, but this is still a long way off and models will continue to change. Then some real cold air comes rushing in for a couple of days.
Feb.11th
Well, I made it through the big blizzard,it was as predicted a major storm.
Totals outside my home here in Waltham,23 inches.
,but drifts were 3-4 ft,barely could see my car.
So basically spent most of the weekend clearing snow.
After effects sore shoulders, sore muscles and exhausted.
New England really took it hard.At least inland we just had to contend with lots of snow. Our coastline took it hard.
Especially SE Mass.,Cape Cod,where they experienced hurricane force winds, many trees down. Many coastal communities still without power.
Here in Waltham our streets are a mess, they have done a terrible job.
Now I understand it was a major storm,so states emergency were declared and travel ban was on until 4 pm Saturday. So they said good it came on weekend we will have plenty of time to clear the roads for Monday.Well, they didn't use the weekend to clear the roads, once the snow stopped plows disappeared. They did not use the weekend to clear the roads.
Main roads around the city are cut in half width wise, sidewalks are not plowed so people are walking in the street, thus drivers have to move over into the oncoming lanes. Many sections of road covered in 2-3 inches of slush.I was out driving around a little yesterday and never saw a plow or city truck trying to improve the roads. Now everyone is going back to work, and the roads are very dangerous.
Now today we get rain and no place for the water to go,so there will be major road flooding this afternoon.Just yesterday with the warmup and melting there were many flooded areas.
Currently we have light snow falling, which should change to rain by this afternoon.
We have to watch next weekend for another possible coastal storm.
Oh and as bad as the roads are,I see a couple out jogging this morning.(?????)

Well, let's see: it is now 39 days to SPRING! Hang in there! Hope your week goes by quickly.
Anyway hope your daughter is alright, best wishes.
Yeh,Im pretty unhappy about the lack of snow clearing.I'm trying to be understanding, because of the amount of snow we received, but at least be out there trying to clear the roads,at least the main roads.
Lets hope next weekend doesn't come to pass.
NEw ~ So glad that you, too, fared reasonably well throughout the blizzard! Weatheringpoints (who now occasionally checks in and used to post more regularly when Emmy was on board) questioned, the other day, as to whether or not I had heard from you. Naturally, I said that you were mostly offline on weekends, but that your earlier pre-blizzard posts suggested that you were well-prepared. Glad you were able to check in with us today to give an update.
It was such a relief that our power remained intact throughout the snow and wind gusts of this vicious storm, plus our neighborhood streets were well plowed to the point of actually seeing mostly pavement in the front main drag. Nevertheless, Methuen also decided to cancel school classes today to further address any obstructed roadways or parking lots that might need further attention. Always better to err on the side of caution these days!
It's mind blowing that many downtown Boston side streets went untouched by locally contracted private plowers to where residents were left to fend for themselves! I hope the Mayor tracks these culprits down and issues punitive damages. So inexcusable and short-sighted on the part of those employed!
By the sound of things, it appears you're working from home today? If not, how treacherous were your roadways today? If you have to travel out there, please take care and remain safe!

Hi Sheslooking Up ~
I'm so sorry to hear that your ditsy neighbor created such unwarranted calamitous moments in addition to having to contend with digging your way out of a snow clogged street! I fully understand how anxious one becomes when having to deal with not only hazzardous weather conditions, but loved ones who have taken ill around or at the very same time. We all certainly hope that your daughter is able to recover soon from whatever ails her and give her our best!
So relieved to hear that you have a working carbon monoxide detector that most probably saved your lives! I mentioned in my blog, the other day, of how important it is, during and after snowstorms, to check for all potentially snow-clogged car tailpipes, home vents of furnaces or gas dryers, etc. So sad how more recent generations of people don't consider these highly important but simple life or death rules regarding carbon monoxide emissions to avoid serious poisoning or, worse yet, death! I still can't get over the death of that 12 yr old boy in his father's snowbound running car.
Like you, I'm now waiting with bated breath for spring to finally arrive. At least, our daylight's getting longer and DST will be arriving in 27 days. Seems ole Punxsutawney Phil's weather radar must've been turned off on Groundhog Day, as he never mentioned the potential for challenging weather elements until a supposedly earlier spring arrived at our doorsteps. Hope we can all survive until then!
I did go into work today and the roads here in Waltham were horrible. I just find it inexcusable to not have roads in reasonable condition, since this happened over the weekend.Less traffic, travel ban for most of Saturday, where were all the workers.I understand a lot of them had worked long shifts Friday and Saturday, but they can't get back out there on Sunday. At least make the main roads around town safe.
But thanks for the good news.My body is going to take that long to recover from the two days of snow clearing this past weekend.
Sorry to learn that you were forced to drive into work today! Hope we don't need to send out a search party for you by the end of the day! The roads are getting more treacherous now with the advent of freezing rainfall. Hope your snowtires have deep treads and grip nicely.
Take care and pace yourself considerably while at work and driving home tonite! You sound like you've already been physically and emotionally overtaxed as it is! Hope things will get much better for all concerned real soon! Glad that more and more people are seemingly getting their power restored in affected areas, as the numbers without appear significantly reduced as of today.
These storms are exciting as a weatherguy, but the cleanup is rough, but your welcome to come up and join the fun,I've got an extra shovel.
I wish i could :)
Shoveling snow would be awesome.
Aside from the wind damage and storm surge which is major along the coast, there are other side effects that make life difficult.
Along SE Mass and Cape Cod,with hurricane force winds, brought down many trees, which took our power lines. These outages may last several days.First they have to clear the fallen trees, then they have to plow, then they can get to the power lines.
Debris from the flooding is everyone in the coastal towns, not to mention the structural damage to those ocean facing homes.
With so much snow, the piles of snow on corners of streets is enormous,so its a challenge getting out of the streets. One has to creep slowly out and hope someone isn't speeding and doesn't see you in time.
The other hazard are these drivers who drive the same way the drive when the roads are dry.
Thought you might be interested to know that as of 12:15 pm today the number of remaining power outages are as follows:
National Grid: Active Outages 756 - Present Affected Customers 23,202
N Star: Current affected customers 93,554
It seems a sizeable reduction from the nearly 350,000 combined customers of yesterday.
At least they are addressing these in a timely manner, although those still without power may not agree
I, too, feel compelled to honor President Lincoln's Birthday on the original day. Sad how we've more recently lumped Presidents Lincoln and Washington's Birthdays together, in order to accommodate for a long holiday weekend that touts denigrating likenesses of them in ads for car or mattress sales. How low can we go? A most recent car ad shows two actors, each dressed as each President, slowly rapping while promoting the latest car models? Guess I'm showing my age, but I find such commercial mockery rather disgusting!
(16th President of the U.S., Abraham Lincoln
1809 - 1865)
Weatherwise, I'm relieved to now learn that tomorrow night's expected snow flurries should produce only traces around here. Glad, too, that those U.S. vs Eurpean weather models, originally showing another weekend snowstorm threat, have begun to waver back in our favor. Fingers are still crossed, though, since we still have the challenge of melting snow turning to hazzardous slick or crusty ice overnight. The only upside is that this week's daytime high averages of 40F should allow for a more gradual melt and, hopefully, reduce the threat of any overall flooding or roofs collapsing.
P.S. Just two more days till Valentines Day! This year, I think we could all use the heartfelt gift of a nice long winter's nap! LOL!
Yes,our presidents birthdays have become huge car sales days now.I saw that commercial where the images of our two great presidents are rapping, makes you cringe.
Fairly nice week ahead with temps in the 40's,should promote some melting.
Sorry to learn that the physical strain and drain caused by this blizzard's cleanup caught up with you the other day. It's sometimes hard to realize or accept our physical decline as we age or face each challenging winter. Glad you were able to go home early, yesterday, and are feeling more pert after catching up on much needed rest.
Looks like my area, North of Boston, won't be seeing any traces of snow fall overnight. I awoke early this am to the sound of spinning tires, as a neighbor was finally successful in backing out of her icy tilted driveway. Despite overnight lows of around or just above freezing, it isn't warm enough to keep our big daytime watery snow-melt from freezing over. Thankfully, our long front main street is completely barren and passable.
I guess, with each winter season, it's a hit or miss proposition when it comes to a city or town's DPW snow budgets or how deftly each is able to deal with each given snowstorm. Sometimes, we tend to forget that, with the Blizzard of '78, it took ten days before one could see the light of day, retrieve cars or be allowed access to the highways again. I think we've made some progress, since that time, but it still doesn't seem fast or fair enough.
Not much going on in the weather department the rest of the week.
The weekend, maybe a little light snow Saturday, some very cold air comes in for Sunday into Monday, then temps moderate again.Should be interesting around here mid next week and end of next week.Still very far out and lots to watch between now and then, but it will be active after the beginning of next week.
THE 13.12Z ECMWF REMAINS CONSISTENT IN ADVERTISING A STRENGTHENING
POLAR VORTEX AS IT ADVECTS FROM NORTH-CENTRAL RUSSIA TOWARDS THE
POLE. IT IS NO SURPRISE TO SEE THAT THE ARCTIC OSCILLATION INDEX
PRESENTLY NEGATIVE IS FORECASTED TO BECOME POSITIVE DURING THE LATER
HALF OF FEBRUARY. CONSEQUENTIALLY...ARCTIC AIR SHOULD REMAIN
ANCHORED IN PLACE ACROSS THE NORTHERN LATITUDES...BOUNDED BY A
STRONGER POLAR JET. BUT WITH THE AFOREMENTIONED SHIFTING POLAR
VORTEX TOWARDS NORTH AMERICA...THERE IS GREATER POTENTIAL FOR
LOWERING HEIGHTS AT THE MID-LATITUDES...AND DRAW DOWN OF ARCTIC AIR
FROM A CONSTANT AREA OF SURFACE HIGH PRESSURE OVER THE CENTRAL
CANADIAN PROVINCES.
How pleasant it is to have sunshine, warmer temps and gradual snowmelt gracing us this Valentines Day. Wishing you and your lovely wife a most enjoyable and relaxing Valentine's evening after a long day at work! Cheers!
Despite the threat of more snow possibly arriving here tomorrow, it nowhere compares to dodging the giant asteroid that allegedly will swoop by over us and our satelites today! Whew! I'd rather be around to either shovel or snowblow mounds of snow than to become seriously injured or worse, obsolete, by such a potential calamity.
How ironically sad that the city/town of Chelyabinsk, Russia received serious damage, earlier, from huge sonic booms caused by a giant meteorite falling to earth and breaking up at 33,000 mph. It apppears to have caused many injuries, to about 1,000 people, and much property damage, especially, broken glass of windows. My thoughts and prayers go out to these unsuspecting citizens! What a real nightmare!
I plan on making the most of this warmish (46F degree high) sunny day by going out to visit relatives and do some errands. It doesn't pay to remain couped up for extended periods of time! LOL!
Hope your work day manages to speed on by and that you and yours have a decent weekend on tap. Don't overtax yourself again if having to shovel out more snow! We're all getting... a-hem... fragile. LOL!
One of the good things to come out of our massive blizzard, now when they predict 3to6 or 4 to 8,we just shrug,"big deal"
Mass, how unlucky can you feel to have a huge space rock land ontop of you or near you.Talk about astronomical odds,"pun intended"
a href="" target="_blank">Link
Hope you don't get too much snow to add insult to your injury (more snow on top your snowstorm)
Hi Mass! A great weekend to you both.
Anyway,it is pretty crazy whats been going on.
I know it's Sunday and you're not online today, but thought you'd want to know that Juslivn has permanently closed up her blogsite due to nefarious trolls.
Hope we can collectively do something to correct this problem with the WU Administration so to safely lure her back on. I think this problem mostly has to do with those, like her, who like to post weather comments on the Main Blog and, for whatever reason, attact those narcisistic bullies who have nothing better to do then search and destroy innocent posters. Disgusting!! I certainly don't want to see our WU blogs and those friendships made become extinct.
Hope you're having a pleasant weekend, have gotten Monday off (?) and that today's blustery winds and few inches of snowfall haven't hampered you too much! Thankfully, this system hasn't knocked out our power nor has it required us to shovel or snowblow like last weekend. YEAH! What a difference a week can make ... huh? At least, tomorrow's a holiday for some (Presidents Day) and vacation week starts for school children.
