light snow event for Sunday

Feb.1st
So we end the week and start a February.I'm always glad January ends,to me its the longest month. It was certainly an up and down month, but ended almost 3 degrees above normal.Last year January was even warmer.
Also last year February was almost 6 degrees above normal,so it'll be interesting to see what happens this year.Rarely get two years in a row of such warm temps for a month, but January did it,so we'll see if February stays above normal. It will be starting off below normal the first week.Still looking at a little light snow on Sunday and Sunday night, but not a major impact.Right now at most 2-4 inches and most of that eastern and south eastern sections.

Jan.31st
So we in that period of winter when we the coldest weather usually occurs.Instead we get 62 degrees yesterday evening and around 60 into this morning.Enjoy the warm weather this morning, temps will start to fall late morning into the afternoon after a cold front passage this morning.
Last night heavy showers moved through, and winds were gusting over 50 mph, some spots recorded gusts over 60.Some trees down and power outages around the area.Winds aren't quite as strong but still very windy with gusts 30-40 mph.Just scattered showers left.More winterlike weather into the weekend, with a chance of light snow on Sunday.

Jan. 30th
Our one day warmup is here, the day starting out in the mid-30's,but climbing, and once the warm front moves north of us later this morning, big jump in temps to the 50's and our high temps may come this evening we may even hit 60 toward midnight and early morning hours, but it also comes with high wind warnings and heavy showers, maybe even thunder this evening and overnight.Back to cold starting tomorrow afternoon.

Jan.29th
Some freezing drizzle during the night had everything coated with a thin coat of ice this morning.Lots of spinouts on the highway this morning as people refuse to slow down and cause accidents.
A slow warmup today above freezing into the 30's,but real warm weather comes in tomorrow for a one day stay.Still no big storms in sight.

Jan.28th
So we've reached the last week of January and eventhough we've been very cold this past week,January still remains above normal.Wednesday we could hit 60,but before we get there,a battle with cold and warm will setup over us in the northeast. Most areas will have a period of light snow starting this afternoon, and may transistion to a period of sleet and freezing rain/drizzle tonight and early tomorrow. The cold air probably won't get pushed out until tomorrow night, and a very warm day on Wednesday, then some heavy showers and maybe some thunder late in the day and then temps head down from there.
January continues to be very dry,2.5 inches below normal.

Oh, Happy B-Day to Mrs. NEw!
I probably missed you already, darn. Enjoy the Superbowl, too NEw. Looking forward to seeing some of the commercials again this year. Well, most of them are already out, but Chrysler didn't let theirs out early, so that will be a surprise. Hope there's no wardrobe surprises, or 'sync' surprises ;)

Thanks,Mass, the family will be over the house when I arrive after work.
Love that groundhog pic. I almost forgot tomorrow is groundhog day, sounds like he will see his shadow though.Oh well if the next six weeks is like what we've had so far,I think we can last.Although those 60's the last couple of days got me a bad case of spring fever.
No problems with the winds that last couple days.
Wife and daughter loved the Jersey boys. We had seen it out in Las Vegas a couple of years ago,and it was excellent did bring back some memorys of those days.

Good Afternoon NEw!

I'm passing the birthday cake along after several of us here on WU have just celebrated another one.

Hope your wife and daughter (?) had a great time seeing "Jersey Boys" in Boston the other night. From the promos I've seen on TV, it looks thoroughly entertaining and supposedly mirrors the early years of Frankie Valley and the Four Seasons. I can't count off hand their numerous smash hit records through the years but they kept me dancin' up a storm in my childhood home's finished basement. LOL! Great era to reminisce!

Hope you weathered the strong winds of Wednesday through Thursday. I'm grateful that, for once, I didn't have to be counted in as one of those who lost power. Guess that week of work by our power company (a couple months ago) helped shore things up here for awhile. In order for me to be completely convinced, however, we need to get through at least one full year without incident. Is it too much to ask? LOL!!

Hope the remainder of your day is mild and that you and your wife have a most enjoyable time celebrating her special day! ENJOY!

I forgot to talk about superbowl weekend which is always a big party weekend around the country.I guess forgot to mention it,because I don't have any clear favourite, but leaning toward SF.Do not like a lot of the players on Baltimore.
Anyway hope everyone has an enjoyable weekend,I'll be in and out today, before I leave. I have to make sure I get out of work on time,as its my wife's birthday.

Hi,Mass, good to see you and glad you made it through the wild night.Yep,all traces of snow are gone,we may get a little back on Sunday.
When Mother Nature bestows us with warm weather in the winter its a guarantee she will take it back with force. The long range now doesn't look too bad, couple of small systems scooting by ,and no real artic air.
Welcome to February. We are quickly heading to the end, hopefully with out to much drama.

Good Afternoon, NEw ~

S-L-U 's(Post #12)is right about those scarey strong howling winds of last night. It had me quite trepidacious about losing power or hearing the crack of a very large tree (just outside) land on our roof or house. Thankfully, all remains well for now, with only smaller more managable broken limbs on the ground, the sun shining in and strong winds having evaporated all traces of snow from our surrounding area.

What a price we pay, this January, for just a taste of much warmer air to arrive and conflict with an arctic air flow plus moisture. Hope everyone remains safe, well and is able to keep their hatches or self battened down.

LT,I haven't checked the pressure on that system, but if I was below 29.00,then that was one deep system.
Sundays system really depends on how quick it deepens, could throw back more moisture along the east coast, but not too impressed at this time.

Hi NEw, yeah, watching the Sunday Clipper, Maybe you could geta few inches out of it. For me in SW CT. only 2" at most. My Lowest Baro. reading for this last system(front) was 29.13", pretty low in itself.

Hi,Jus,
Yeh,they've been mentioning this clipper for a while, but suggestions are this will strengthen too late out to see and just give us a couple of inches, but definitely something to watch. These clippers sometimes can surprise us.

Just to show how strong that storm system that went up through Canada and swung the cold front through.Early this morning our pressure was at 28.96.Thats Tropical storm strength, almost hurricane strength.
Our dewpoint has dropped from the 50's early this morning into the 30's,so the atmosphere is changing.

So as January comes to a close, here are some stats.
1. Another month above normal..more than 3 degrees above norma.
2.Very dry,about 2 inches below normal.
3. This makes two years in a row of way below normal snowfall.Only about 6 inches for the month. Avg is around 15 inches.
4. We did have about a week of frigid weather, but more days above normal than below.
We'll see what February holds, some think it will be below normal, but my feeling is it will continue the string of above normal months. There will be ups and downs, but on avg above normal. It looks like Feb. will start out cold.
The pattern still does not favor any big storms as yet,a few minor winter storms.

GM,Looking it was a wild night and early morning.
Thankfully it had let up by the time I left the house this morning.
Certainly the last two winters were very easy, but don't forget 2011.When we had people cleaning off the roofs because of all the snow.Thats the year I had so much trouble with water leaks through my roof because of ice dams.
These kind of wintes are so much easier to deal with.

Well, that was a wild night! Made it hard not only for my husband and me to sleep, but Trotley the Cat was miserable, and our daughter reports that her cat spent the night under the bed. I was amazed to see this morning that no branches had fallen in the yard. Yesterday we hit 63 degrees, and of course my poor bulbs are coming up in this warmth. It's pleasant in a way, but not good for plants that need a long period of freezing weather to grow properly.

It does seem to me that even during the 50 or so years that I have lived here that winters are most definitely less snowy, and that there are fewer long periods of intense cold. IMHO, at least our corner of the world is warming.

Hi,Mass, yeh,I've been overwhelmed at work, and then I took off Friday to take my wife to the registry for a new license and also stop by the body shop to see about getting a dent on the edge of her car door estimated, the door had blown open on windy day and it hit a post in parking lot.Just a small dent, but it chipped the paint and so they have to paint both doors for a total of 900 dollars. No matter what size a dent it will cost you.
Anyway wife and daughter are going into Boston to the colonial to see Jersey boys,I hope the rain holds off unitil late.

Good Morning, NEw!

Nice to see you back on your blogsite this am, as both Sheslookingup and myself posted messages on your previous blog questioning your somewhat lengthy absence. Hope you didn't have a relapse of illness or were too deluged with work, etc.

Due to last evening's snowy and icy roadways, a car went half off the other side of our street, with the other half pitching toward woodlands and a gully. Flashing police lights (that we saw from inside our livingroom) tipped us off along with a lot of lights and commotion from two tow trucks (one being a flatbed) that responded. Unfortunately, there's too much zippity do-dah going on along our roadways these days with no consideration to potentially dangerous conditions. Live and learn, I guess.

Currently, a slow warm up has melted all the snow or ice from our streets and is now making it much safer for commuting. It will be interesting to see how tomorrow's big warm spell will effect our surrounding area. Thankfully, there's not enough snow to cause flooding but we could see heavy rainfall by tomorrow night. In any event, hubby and I are going to make use of this retreat to early spring by going out to lunch and celebrate. I'd rather deal with 55 degrees and rain rather than frigid single to twin digit temps like last week.

Hope you're doing well and can make it through your work week.

Just about the same here NEw. we may get into the milder air abit earlier than you. We've had about 1/2" of snow, now mixed precip. Temp. just above freezing. Baro. here 30.17"F. Your synopsis sounds to be right on the money. I think we all might see alittle light snow late Sat. or Sunday, and maybe a more important storm by next Wed. or thurs. The NAO might be going slightly negative by then. LT. Stamford CT.
