Fall 2012 Forecast for Alberta, Saskatchewan, And Manitoba.
Issued 8:48pm Sept 25th 2012

The long hot summer is coming to an end so what does fall have in store.

First a look back at summer 2012
Temperatures were up to 3C above the norm and nobody missed out. July saw the return of the intense humidity last seen in 2007. July saw more tornadoes in the region than the entire United States! Dozens of touchdowns generally in Saskatchewan and the Alberta foothills north of Calgary. A Tornado warning also effected my own community on July 23rd though no touchdown was confirmed.

Now for the Forecast:
Overall the warm and dry weather will persist though shrink in size from east to west. Alberta will be warm and dry overall with normal to cool and dry in Saskatchewan and Manitoba

Rest of September: Very warm and bone dry over the entire region, some of the last thunderstorms of the year here and there

October: Dry and Near to warmer than normal in Alberta, Colder than normal for the rest of the region
Becoming very cold rapidly in the easternmost areas as warmth hugs the Alberta foothills. early snowfall will be a problem over much of the Eastern
Prairies with temps as low as -15C.

November: Warm and dry weather hangs on in Alberta but signs point to a brutally cold and early start to winter in Saskatchewan and Manitoba. Heavy snowfall and potential blizzards also a threat

December 1-21: Lingering heat in Alberta. With record low arctic sea ice there is a potential of very strong -AO values and a very weak jet stream, some areas May see most of this time in a deep freeze while other areas(most likely BC/Alberta) may not see any cold at all.

What was a nearly perfect summer will soon come to an end. The summer is so far hot and traditional with he hottest day being recorded in July for the first time in half a decade. I don't see the 31-33C temps back in July being exceeded this month.

August overall was 3C warmer than normal with around the normal amount of rainfall. Such conditions have created a perfect crop on the prairies, farms, insects, birds, all enjoyed the summer of 2012. And this while the rest of North America is being devastated by severe drought.

September 2012 forecast
Issued 11:51pm Sept 2 2012

Overall September will have from near normal rainfall in the east to above normal for the west. Temperatures will be near normal for Alberta, warmer than normal for the rest

The wet weather could slow the harvest of N.As only crop of 2012. More east frost could pose a problem for southern Sask and Manitoba by the 2nd week.
Alberta should expect large scale systems bringing heavy rain and even some mountain snow. Though I don't think the "wet September will cause too many problems for farmers.

Sept 1-10: Cooler and wetter than normal for Alberta, Near normal for Manitoba and Sask.

Sept 10-20: Warmer and drier in Alberta, Cool with some frosts in Sask and Manitoba.

Sept 20-30: Becoming wet, Snow in mountain areas of Alberta, possibly Calgary as well. Temps below normal in Alberta, near normal temps for Sask and Manitoba
