Looking at the Sun is harmful to your eyes at any time, partial eclipse or no. The danger that a partial solar eclipse poses is simply that it may prompt people to gaze at the Sun, something they wouldn't normally do. The result can be "eclipse blindness," a serious eye injury that can leave temporary or permanent blurred vision or blind spots at the center of your view. Fortunately, there are many easy ways to watch the show safely. ...Total Solar Eclipse
The next publicly announced Vandenberg AFB missile launch is a Target Launch Vehicle (TLV) early on the morning of July 23 during a 02:15-03:20 PDT launch period. The launch will be observed by the NFIRE satellite to collect data for the Missile Defense Agency.

The photo shows the moon rising through wildfire smoke in the east, the lookout to the south with the (unfortunately, faint) Milky Way rising, and Jupiter shining brightly low in the horizon.
This is a 4 minute exposure, f5.6, ISO 1600 with a 16mm lens on a tracking mount (a mount that rotates at the same rate as Earth - that's why the ground is blurred, but the stars are not). I combined several shots to span from east (left) to west and fiddled with the image levels to try and show the sky. The lookout's blue light is from an LED lamp and the orange light is from the fire in the woodstove. The trees on the right are lit by the moon, which by the time the camera was pointed that way, had risen above the smoke.
Although the moon (and the hazy smoke, and the high clouds...) washed out the Milky Way, it was still amazing and wonderful to see.

sp In a way that's good news. Everything there was shaken down and/or retrofitted after the last one there.
The Gulf Coast lost Thousands to Fear of what could happen again in Aug 2005,many may Never return.
One of my actors with disability
just moved there with her family
I cant get ahold of them
is that city near the epicenter?
thanks
Hope your okay cal.
Michael People really do do that especially if the first shake they feel is a strong one like this was.
The shake maps should be up at the USGS site soon if they aren't already. Over the next few days the shaking felt map will fill in as people make their reports.
Pat Thanks for the update and link.
I am so glad you got ahold of the Mrs. & y'all are ok.

Have you seen the video of the LA City Council meeting - they were in the midst of a vote - wonder what it was, lol. That building is one that's been retrofitted so they all stayed put.
People do move out when we get a quake - keep your fingers crossed ;)
Temecula is SSE of the center of the quake about the same distance away as I am so I doubt there was any damage or danger there. If it's the first quake they felt it probably gave them a good scare though.
I looked at ww to see if L10 posted there but don't see him. Wait and see, I guess.
Fsh Thanks. :^)
sp LOL "Welcome to California, now leave!"
Well, I missed all the action. I was riding my bike to swim laps and apparently that's when the quake struck.
My brother, who also swims laps, asked me if I felt the earthquake. I thought he was kidding. He said the flags above the pool took a dip and the whole pool jolted. I missed the whole thing!
When I got home (about 5 minutes ago) there was a message from my mom that something fell in her house, but I'm not sure what, the message wasn't terribly clear. I tried calling her back but my phone is acting funny.
Finally used another one in the house and I think I got through, but she wasn't home - she is now off playing bridge.
I took a walk around the house and don't see anything out of place.
Naturally, the one day I give my cell phone to hubby, I could have used it! He's going to call us when we get to the Fair, so I gave it to him this morning. I think this is about the 1st time we've done this!
Must have been a premonition!
I did hear it was a 5.8 located outside of Chino. I'll do a search and post what I can, but I've got to eat first - I'm starving!
**Glad (not really glad, but relieved) to read that you had phone trouble too. I thought it was just me!
Here's a link to the most recent map:
Here's a link to the list of most recent quakes....wow - there's been quite a few. But the biggest looks like it regisered 5.4 WSW of Chino Hills
Explanation of the MODIFIED MERCALLI INTENSITY SCALE
I usually fill out those surveys too, but since I didn't feel anything, I guess I can't. Glad you posted that map.
I tried to IM my daughter (she uses AIM at work) but it says she's away from her computer. According to the map, Santa Monica felt it lightly - maybe not at all!
Next, I'll try to call my older daughter...hope the phone works!
I talked to my older daughter who was at her local Kohl's. She said she really felt it. The fire alarm went off and they evacuated the store.
She tried to call home but couldn't get through. She just returned to the store to get the clothes she had to leave behind!
I've got the news on now and everything looks under control. Little damage, and only a few injuries (I think).
Phone service seems to be back up too - including cell phones.
Flashlights in every bedroom and living room. What else??
Maybe I can still get something done today, now that the excitement's over ;)
Patrap's Hurricane Preparation blog might give you more ideas... and of course there's Putting Down Roots in Earthquake Country and Related Resources.
sp Thanks for looking out for us. :^) Hope the rest of your day isn't as bumpy.
My husband has me trained from a long time ago to never let the tank go under 1/4 full. I usually fill it up before then because of that...but it rarely gets under 1/4!
Now I've got to poof! Getting picked up soon.
Thanks for the run down on all the CA folks sp! Just knew everyone would be OK!
At any rate, I am sure glad there weren't any major injuries or damage.

But CB pays well and I had the time. Link
Glad your mom wasn't too bothered. It's funny, someone I know was walking around outside his home intently focused on his cell phone conversation when it happend. He didn't notice the earthquake but he had a "dizzy spell" also.
Pat It's not nice to fool with Mother Nature.
cat I can't begin to tell you how glad I am that you didn't feel a thing in Texas, LOL!
Thanks for stopping by. :^)

Thanks for providing blog space for earthquake info yesterday (not that you had much choice!). It's good to have a clearinghouse, of sorts, in those situations.
I was happy to provide the space, happy for the info contributed and happy for the company. Here's a public service announcement -
USGS Release: Southern Californians Urged to Join Largest Earthquake Drill in U.S. History.
How's it going?
I see that you and David were well blessed. I'm very happy for both of you. :^)
