A QUICK UPDATE ON TRAINING DOGS

A fantastic tool my family has used for years to train our dogs for obedience, unnecessary barking, digging holes in the yard etc. is a 'CITRONELLA SPRAY TRAINING COLLAR' (the one with remote control is best). A bit expensive but worth every dollar! I've mentioned this aid to several people and to my surprise nobody knew it exists. So here are a few links to read more:

UNFORTUNATELY THE HURRICANE SEASON WILL BE BACK, AND THERE ARE STILL PETS FROM EARLIER SEASONS WAITING TO FIND A HOME, AND MANY OTHERS FILL THE SHELTERS ALL YEAR LONG.

Sophie, a 5-year old Dalmatian mix was found abused and tied to the door of the APR in Ft Lauderdale over 3 years ago. Since then she has watched her kennelmates come and go while she was left behind, wagging her tail, waiting for someone to take her home too. Max, a 1-year old yellow Labrador mix was rescued from the Wilma 'death roll' facility and placed in Sophie's cage. Everybody thought the young and handsome Max would be adopted soon, but there was not much hope for Sophie, who had grown fat, and "people don't want fat, adult, Dalmatian mix dogs". But nobody wanted Max either, because he was "too wild and hard to handle".

We found a match 'made in heaven' and the dogs are at home now. Needless to say we are as thrilled as the wonderful volunteers who work their jobs during the week and take care of rescued pets during their weekend at APR.

Abandoned and abused animals - like all pets - need love, patience, and good amount of training to adjust to a new life in a family. Most people prefer to get young pets, but some look for adult ones, and there are advantages and disadvantages to both. And both options are good when an animal finds a loving home! I've had many dogs, from expensive pure breed show dogs to mixed breed companions, and I have loved them all the same. But I doubt we'll ever get a pet that is not from a rescue shelter.
If we can't have pets at home, we can volunteer to walk them, wash them, or just give them love and companionship in one of the hundreds of rescue shelters around the country. And if we have room in our hearts and homes, whether we already have a pet or not, let's consider this:
There are about 200.000 animals looking for a home right now.

WE CAN HELP, AND MAYBE SAVE THE LIFE OF AN ANIMAL

Many pets love to have a companion to play with, and - in my experience - having two pets is easier that having one, specially when the time comes for one of them to leave this world.

Please feel free to post your experiences, tips, advice, and any comments on rescuing abandoned and abused animals.

Liisa, I wrote this long post to you and I guess I forgot to post it. Duh! Thank you so much for the lovely post in my blog. We are one big family and we will be looking after each other in the days to come. Could you prehaps post what you feel we need to have ready for our pets and the best way to handle them during a hurricane. It seems like the East Coast of the United States has a very high risk this year so we need to really be ready. Thanks again and make it a terrific Thursday!

I would love to join you all in some fun banter tonight, the problem is I am 3 hours earlier than you. So 7PM for you is 4PM for me.

My day isn't near done enough to be just sitting around. Try to make at least a few stay so I can join you later in the evening! That fun stuff is just the kind of stuff I miss doing with you guys!

That said, if this weather doesn't clear, I might be down enough to be here. I need a portion of sunshine everyday and we are in the midst of May Gray - yesterday never saw the sun. I heard my daughter had some at her house yesterday, so I forwarned her - if she gets it today and we don't - I'm on my way over!!! Gotta have that vitamin D ya know! LOL

LTT - You were the other one that I thought would enjoy this. I posted in Aqua9's too.

Subject: Dog Rules

1. Dogs are never permitted in the house. The dog stays outside in a specially built wooden compartment named, for very good reason, the dog house.

2. Okay, the dog can enter the house, but only for short visits or if his own house is under renovation.

3. Okay, the dog can stay in the house on a permanent basis, provided his dog house can be sold in a yard sale to a rookie dog owner.

4. Inside the house, the dog is not allowed to run free and is confined to a comfortable but secure metal cage.

5. Okay, the cage becomes part of a two-for-one deal along with the dog house in the yard sale, and the dog can go wherever he pleases.

6. The dog is never allowed on the furniture.

7. Okay, the dog can get on the old furniture but not the new furniture.

8. Okay, the dog can get up on the new furniture until it looks like the old furniture and then we'll sell the whole works and buy new furniture... upon which the dog will most definitely not be allowed.

9. The dog never sleeps on the bed. Period.

10. Okay, the dog can sleep at the foot of the bed.

11. Okay, the dog can sleep alongside you, but he's not allowed under the covers.

12. Okay, the dog can sleep under the covers but not with his head on the pillow.

13. Okay, the dog can sleep alongside you under the covers with his head on the pillow, but if he snores he's got to leave the room.

14. Okay, the dog can sleep and snore and have nightmares in bed, but he's not to come in and sleep on the couch in the TV room, where I'm now sleeping. That's just not fair.

15. The dog never gets listed on the census questionnaire as"primary resident," even if it's true.

Thanks Code! If I could afford it, I would have a rather large shelter and a huge ranch! When I was little, my mom was amazed with all the strays that ended up at our house.

I know he and Harley are going to be very happy. She loves to ride so he plans on taking her on all of his trips in his truck, and hopefully on his harley.

Hi Finn! I finally have a story for this great blog!

A friend moved to Tampa a few months ago and he has been feeling down and depressed since his kids are here (Louisiana). So he said he wanted to get a dog (since he likes mine so much) and asked if I could help. He wants one to cuddle with at night and run on the beach during the day. I told him that a yorkie really might not want to run on the beach but that I thought he needed something like a jack russell (still manly but yet small enough to have as a lap dog)

Sunday I got on Petfinder and narrowed my search to the Tampa area. I looked at dogs for 2 hours! And then I clicked on the one! I found a beautiful female jack russell, almost two years old, loves to cuddle and sit on your lap, very affectionate, and loves to play! I made a few calls and found out she was still available for adoption.

So I called him (he was driving from Pensacola back to Tampa) and told him that his new best friend was waiting to meet him in Ocala. He stopped in Ocala on his way home and fell in love! They didn't know what her name was originally, so her new name is Harley Girl and she is about to be spoiled rotten! Hopefully I will get to meet her next month.

Yesterday I saw an incredible flight; A tiny bird flew right along the surface of our swimming pool and took a sip of the water in a fraction of a second.
We are getting desperate. Tonight I'll be egotistic and pray for rain. And make a raindance too. Perhaps then our dream-forcast comes true - it says we have an itsy bitsy teeny weeny chance of getting a few drops here in Palm Beach County in the next few days.
LU, watch me dance!

SWLAStormFanatic's mom has gone home.

Goodbye Martha Jane,
May you ever dance in the Light
You were the mom who gave us Paul
To be our well beloved friend
He called us to pray
And we all shared his deep pain
Now you belong to heaven
And the stars spell out your name

And it seems to me you lived your life
With heart full filled with love
Never fading with the sunset
When the rain set in
And your footsteps will always fall you
Along WUBAís memories
Our candles burned for days and days
Now go enjoy the light

Loveliness we've lost
And loveliness we learned
This torch we'll always carry
For our Dutchboy's golden mom
And even though we try
Paulís sorrow brings us tears
But our words can not express
The joy you brought us with your son

Thank you Martha Jane,
May you ever dance in the Light
You were the mom who gave us Paul
To be our well beloved friend
He called us all to pray
And we shared his heartfelt pain
Now you belong to heaven
And the stars spell out your name

I seem to have trouble with time zones, dates and ... what country am I in? What currency? LMBO
See you on the 13th, have a great week!

PS. Max dug a hole to China last night... ah, the sweet wild teens! He sure rejuvenates Sophie though, running in the yard as she was a baby LOL!

Doggies are having a ball. Sophie loves to bury chew-bones, Max loves to dig them up. Sophie loves to have her back scratched and run around the yard chased by Max. Max loves to tear up pillows... 5 gone so far. Sophie's diet has worked, she's showing the beginning of a waist! Soon she can scratch herself.
I ROTF when Jamie said they were a "wild bunch". Both surely qualify, they're baaaad! LMAO

I like this blog. So many animals need homes. Both my wife and I's pets are animals that didn't have homes. Our cat was a stray that found it's way under my parents' house. She was a little kitten, almost too small for solid food. Well now she is a 11 pound active cat. She is a very pretty Calico. :) Our dog is a Blue Heeler that someone put out. She is 8-10 years old and mostly blind. She wandered up to me at work one day, no tags or anything. I checked with all the local animal shelters, and with animal control. No mention of her, and no one ever came looking for her. So she now has a good home. :)

Good Mornin Finn, took Zoe to the dog park yesterday. There were many rescue dogs there with their new owners. Such a happy bunch. Zoe loved all the dogs, but her favorite was an old long haired Basset. His name was Buba. She could dominate him, so he was he pick of the group. I know for each of these happy stories there is a sad doggie that just needs someone to love. Just keep up the good work and I can see more dogs in your future!!

Hey, Finn. Been a while since I've touched base with you. How ya been doing? Love your new "children" !! Didn't you two move into a new house?
I haven't really been on here all that much lately. A quick peek at lunch from work, and some on weekends. Weeknights, maybe; maybe not.. Been working a fair amount of overtime since the first part of March, and then have been checking in on an elderly relative that fell almost a month ago and has been in a rehab facility since then. So, I've been nodding out fairly early.
Have also been enjoying the spring weather and spending what spare time I have in the yard. Got my tomatoes and peppers potted up. Some flowers. Put seeds out in the flower bed. Hope they come up; had mostly weeds last year! LOL
