Finn's Universal Blog

Thank you friends...

...for your condolences on my mothers passing.

Keeping this old blog up for a few more weeks:
I FINALLY FOUND A MOMENT TO WRAP UP THIS SUBJECT!

We had (hurricane) impact windows installed at our house in June 2007.
The best investment we’ve ever made, and here’s why:

Our house had eleven windows and three glass sliding patio doors.
Six windows were ‘standard’ size 36” x 36”, one was a picture window 106” x 62”. We also had two decorative tall and slim bedroom windows, two small bathroom windows and three standard size glass sliding doors.
We had them all replaced; three windows with glass block and the rest with impact windows/doors.
Except for the large picture window (which we had to order) Home Depot had the windows on stock, each for about $100 more than normal windows. The two impact French doors and an impact sliding door were also on stock for $1000 each, just a bit more than normal glass ones. The two decorative bedroom windows we closed with glass block, as they cut the light in a beautiful way and lighten up the room. The bathrooms got glass block too.
The total cost of the our whole renovation, with materials and work by our handyman ($25/hour) was $7.800. (Would have been a bit more, as we saved $500 using a 10% off of max. $5000 coupon, which we asked for online and received by mail.
The renovation took 9-10 days.

Before deciding what to do, we had asked several companies for an estimate of the exact above mentioned renovation. It would have cost us $13.500 - $14.700.
To have accordion shutters installed would have cost us $6000 - $8000 and that would have been our second option.

After putting up aluminum shutters at our previous house for TS Ernesto - blinded by sweat and with bleeding hands - I sat panting in the dark house and promised myself that never, EVER again… so we didn’t even ask for estimates on aluminum, clear panel or plywood boarding up options.

Now I’m happy, and the final note is:
1) We’re saving energy, and we are not in darkness
2) Our house value went up 10%
3) Our home insurance went down $2.100 per year
Do the math (as I’m no good with that :) - I only know we made a great decision!
