North Sea storm spares England and the Netherlands

A massive fall storm over Europe's North Sea generated winds near hurricane force last night that pushed a dangerous storm surge near 1.5 meters (4.65 feet) in height to the southeastern English coast this morning. The storm surge was much lower than originally feared, due in part to the fact it did not hit at high tide. The surge did breach sea defenses and caused some minor coastal flooding in England. It was feared that the storm might rival the great North Sea Flood of 1953 that breached the dikes in the Netherlands. Over 2,000 people died in northern Europe in that storm, mostly in the Netherlands. While today's storm did not approach the 1953 storm in severity, it did bring the highest storm surge seen in the past 20 years to the North Sea. The massive flood gates that protect the Dutch port of Rotterdam were closed for the first time since they were constructed in the 1990s. From early media accounts, the gates did their job admirably, protecting the Netherlands from inundation. Water levels reached 3.16 meters above mean sea level in the southern Netherlands, and 3.40 meters above sea level in the northern Netherlands, with no flooding reported. The floods of 1953 saw Dutch waters rise to 3.85 meters (12.6 ft) above sea level. Today's storm was not the remains of Hurricane Noel, which is currently over northern Canada.

Tropical update
An area of disturbed weather over the extreme southern Caribbean, near Panama, is under about 20 knots of wind shear. The computer forecast models are predicting that some development of this region may occur by Sunday, when wind shear is expected to fall below 20 knots. However, the models are less keen on this prospect than yesterday. Any system that might form is expected to move westward and affect Costa Rica and Nicaragua.

I'll have an update Monday morning, unless there's some new development this weekend.

There is enough dry air to the north of the carrib system to prevent a major hurricane. It's rains would be a blessing though. This dry season is going to be rough and we need every drop we can get.

good morning everyone

It looks as if the S Caribbean is a little better organized than yesterday. Surface obs and a partial pass from quikscat indicate that a surface low is near 12N 78W

This bears watching over the weekend

understand, my brain on mars too... my little fireman has to have an MRI on the 19th of Nov...they are checking for tumors on his spinal cord and in his brain...

My oldest son had benign bone tumors which were monitored for free at the Shriner's Crippled Children's Hospital in Shreveport, LA. They ended up going away by themselves, but, I have to tell you, it scared me to death. I will pray for you and your little fireman...

thanks, appreciate it, oldest son too as he already has the tumors... thank you

fireman, you may be older...but I have been thru alot...I burried my dad at 15 and lost my mom just 5 years ago...both to cancer...long illness, i took care of both...i also burried my first child...I have been thru more than most people twice my age...I have a lot of faith in God...and that is what matters... I believe we are all put on this earth for a purpose...whether it be one day, a week or 100 years...when our purpose has been met, our time is over...we cannot stop it, change it, or blame for it...

I emailed their names...

Sleep tight, hold the Misses tight, and be sure to whisper you love her in her ear... my rule of life...end every phone call with I love you...never go to bed mad...tell a joke in the middle of a fight just to let them know you still love them...you don't know what is around the corner...dont regret the last thing you said to someone you love!

Tig, I'm a bit older than you and I'm just starting to understand why some of the more traumatic events happened in my life as I look back. Most everything seems to have happened for a reason. It doesn't make me like it any better, it just helps me to accept it a little better. Hang in there and make sure you and your hubby stay in touch with someone each of you can talk to. Don't try to handle it by yourselves without some outlet.

I am a survivor...they got the gene from me... I got it from my dad...Life is only ours to borrow...it is what we make of it that means something...a few days after my oldest found out, he was saved in a fishing boat...then baptized by my uncle who is a preacher... God works in mysterious ways... maybe it was his way of getting that lamb! As far as Andy goes...he is all boy! Afraid of nothing! Didn't even cry the last time he got immunizations...and got shots in each leg at same time...no tears... thank goodness they sedate little ones for most tests...

Michael is on Meds right now to control the symptoms, seems to be working for now...he is dead set on waiting...if he gets numbness of legs or loses control of bladder or intestines...then no more waiting...until then, he says as long as he can function on the meds...he is going to classes. Got to give him credit for not letting it get him down tho...btw, he got a 96 on his national test for food manager, an 83 in bread prep and has a 100 in french pastries... :0)

Michael's are beginning to affect his kidneys/bladder, he has Asthma...all of the tumers are one the areas of the spine that control the bladder, kidneys, lungs, stomach, liver, etc...the largest is 2 cm x 1.2 cm... doesn't sound big until you know it is on the spinal cord...not much room for error in there...his are located c 1,2,3 t 10, 11, 12, 13 and the L region they are on the actual nerve endings of the spinal cord

I will say several prayers for both of them. 'Cause God is still in charge. Is mike experiencing any difficulties with his at the moment? I am assuming these tumors grow adjacent to the spinal cord and associated nerve bundles. I know I've been told many times that the rain falls on the just and the unjust, but sometimes it's hard to understand the why's and why not's of situations like this.

they are almost 15 1/2 years apart...sounds like neither one of us planned very well...lol...do me a favor and just say a prayer...Andy (3) is having his first MRI (hoping nothing is there), Michael (18) will have his second set during Christmas break...his will tell us if we can wait till summer break before he has to have surgery...

Sounds like you have a pretty good spread there. My oldest was 18 1/2 when my youngest was born, so between the four of them it took me 36 1/2 years to get them all raised to 18 yrs of age.

they are looking for neurofibromas...typically benign but 99% of the time, have to be removed...it is genetic...oldest son has them on his spine, we found out 3 days before he left for college...

I'm so sorry to hear that he's going through that. Many people go thru stuff like that and it's bad enough, but when it's a child it's awful. I hope everything turns out to be benign and dormant, or gone away.

Tig, I've just been here a little while and I was going back to look at some of the older posts. My bride was gone four days this week to a class and I got her back this afternoon, so the afternoon and evening were hers. Part of me was missin' but I'm all back together again. Anyway, the four hour drive worked on her, so I'm gonna blog and keep the house quiet for her.
