State of U.S. global warming efforts: Business as Usual

President Bush spoke of "the serious challenge of global climate change" in his State of the Union speech last night, and called for the U.S. to reduce gasoline consumption 20 percent over the next 10 years. The reduction in gasoline consumption would primarily be achieved through promotion of alternative fuels such as ethanol and liquefied coal. While it is a pleasant change to hear the president acknowledge the reality of the climate change problem and to propose measures that could significantly reduce U.S. consumption of foreign oil, his proposals do virtually nothing to combat global warming.

About one third of greenhouse gases emissions in the the U.S. come from cars and trucks. Thus, a 20% cut in gasoline consumption would reduce U.S. greenhouse gas emissions by about 6%, at best. Since a large portion of the gasoline reduction would come from liquefied coal--which, when burned, makes double the CO2 of burning gasoline--even this modest 6% decrease in emissions might end up at zero. The President offered no plan to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from electric utilities or industry, whose emissions will continue to grow at about 2% per year. Overall, greenhouse gas emission will grow by 14% over the next decade under the President's plan, according to Philip Clapp, president of the National Environmental Trust. The consensus among most climate scientists is that emission of greenhouse gases must be radically cut 50-60% globally by 2050 in order to avoid dangerous levels of global warming. The President's business-as-usual plan to allow emissions to increase by 14% over the next decade will make it extremely difficult to achieve that goal, as the U.S. contributes about 25% of the world's greenhouse gas emissions.

Pat,I'm not saying she's not a good person.I'd like to know, what did she care about what STL posted? It was weather relasted and accurate.I don't get what her problem was.

.You might wind up in a box looking out at the world staring in.

And what did that mean?

Update...
updated sky cover through tonight to indicate no to very little
cloud cover. For those that cannot remember...that bright Ball of
fire in the sky is the sun. Cannot readily remember the last time
we had a mostly sunny day...maybe 10 to 14 days ago

Probably not....STL seems to care about the weather in general....I wouldn't let someone run me off if they accused me of that. That's letting them win at whatever game is being played.

Well,STL really didn't seem to care about the weather in general. His posts usually did have to do with STL weather. But that's his right.Your blog can be about whatever you want it to be,provided it's weather related.I don't see what Aquak cared.

DAMN..when i have to agree with CB..you know it's a bad day.....pat..just post Aquas latest post..instead of adding to the drama.....never mind..i'll do it....

and my 2 freakin cents.....you of the younger generation...aqua....teaches us a simple and easy way to deal with a problem...quick...polite..and fair and respectful

Judging from the mail I've recieved, the general concensus among most folks is that he is a very sensitive creature, and must be treated extremely gently. (Many folks also brought to my attention that he does, on occasion, offer valuable weather insight to other areas of the country.) I never thought he was sensitive; I felt like he was confident in his blogging abilities. He has offered a lot here; and I felt he had so much more he could have offered. His met skills are fantastic, and never once have I said anything derrogatory about his abilities, his blogging skills, or his knowledge. I have always encouraged him. Very possibly, though, my "encouragement" was misconstrued as a personal attack on him, and that was never how it was meant to be.

When faced with criticism, some folks become stubborn, determined to do better. Other folks falter, and can't handle it. We have all types here. Although my words were never meant to demean him, I have no control over how he reacted to my words. I have no control over how he presents himself here on WU. No one has control over another person's actions...and on the same token, I have no control over how my words may be perceived.

I will take this all into consideration into the future; that everyone is different, and must be treated respectfully. I have always been glad to have everyone here; and MichaelStL, you are no exception.

Peace and God's love to all.
Sincerely, Aqua

I am so sick and tired of this crap. Why is it the USA has to make all the changes? What about all the 3rd world countries and China, and other major countries that have nowhere near the restrictions on cars, and pollution that we do? I do not buy for a minute we are the main cause for global warming, if it is even real. We have no real proof man is behind the whole thing. WE as humans only have true records of the weather dating back 200 years. Yet the earth is over a million years old. We have no clue as to what the past was really like, except one thing. Weather runs in patterns. We have no clue as to how long they take or how severe they can be. Its funny Al Gore was on CNN a few months back and he said "One day people will wake up in Mexico and it will be snowing and the North pole will be 95 degrees. And yes it will happen in our life time if we don't change all of our thinking." Yeah OK.

.....

Now YOU...Mr. StL...you are a very good met-in-training...and you also have some great skills on the net. BUT...you have never been here for anyone who had scary weather in a different zipcode than yours. You only care about the weather over your roof. I have been saying this for the past 5 months, and everyone agrees with me. WE are a community, and you seem to choose to slice yourself away from it.
StL- we have worried over you. You have worried over no one.

Buster the CO2 is locked up in the peat & permafrost. When this goes it will greatly exxagerate the warming. If we get to that point that will be a tipping point you always hear about.
Wooooof, I hope that I am not around anymore when that happens.

Yes Kris, negative feedback~ we warm it till it starts releasing CO2 that isn't intended to be released, even at the hieght of cycles, stuff in permafrost (this includes Methane). The point of where we make things really uninhabitable.

Your welcome fshhead! We are people & can do anything when we put our minds to it. Lets not sit like frogs whipped by our president in water, on a bunsen burner, as it slowly gets warmer & boils before we jump up about it.

Someone brought up a good point yesterday. What if the changes in temperature are causing the changes in CO2,and not the other way around? Not recently I mean, but in the past.

Kris~ where is the red line gonna be in 10 years if everyone does nothing? & you realize that if Temp does coenside with CO2 ( & well those 400,000 years of data as well as all the ice core data that has been drawn & anilized from anywhere there is ice do)~ then well if we aren't in for a bad ride, we will be in 10 years.
