Save the Keeling Curve!

Climate change's most iconic research project is in danger--a victim of budget cuts in an era of increased government belt-tightening. The Keeling Curve is a measurement of the concentration of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere made atop Hawaii’s Mauna Loa, begun in 1958 by Dr. Charles Keeling. It is the longest-running such measurement in the world. The curve was instrumental in showing how human emissions of carbon dioxide were steadily accumulating in Earth's atmosphere, and raised awareness that human-caused climate change was an ever-increasing threat to the stability of our climate. After Keeling's death in 2005, the measurements were continued by his son, Ralph F. Keeling. Support from NSF, NOAA and NASA is being diminished or withdrawn, and Keeling has turned to crowd-funding to help raise funds to continue these important measurements. I hope you can join me in making a donation.

Figure 1. The Keeling Curve: climate change's most iconic image. The curve's steady year-by-year increase in CO2 due to burning of coal, oil, and natural gas has wriggles on top of it, due to the natural seasonal cycle in CO2--plants suck in CO2 during the Northern Hemisphere growing season, then release it during the winter. CO2 Levels Hit 401 ppm
The latest data from the Keeling curve website shows that atmospheric carbon dioxide levels are surging upwards in their usual late winter push, as plants return CO2 to the atmosphere before the Northern Hemisphere spring growing season hits. CO2 levels reached 401 ppm (parts per million) last week on top of Mauna Loa, setting a new record. CO2 levels were at 280 ppm in 1870, increased less than 1 ppm per year in the 1960s, then accelerated to 2 ppm per year during the 2000s. Less than 1% of the increase since 1870 has been due to natural sources, such as volcanoes. The last time carbon dioxide levels reached 400 ppm—between 2.5 and 5 million years ago during the Pliocene Era—the Earth was 3.5 to 9° F warmer (2 to 5° C), and sea levels were 65 to 80 feet higher.

Senate holds all-nighter on climate change
A group of 31 U.S. Senators pulled an all-nighter last night on the floor of the U.S. Senate, taking turns from 9 pm Monday night until 9 am Tuesday morning to promote policy actions on climate change. Many of the Senators involved issued tweets using the hashtag #Up4Climate. The all-nighter was another indication that politicians are becoming increasingly bold about speaking up on climate change.

◦ New WunderPhotos layer! View, share, and submit beautiful weather photos.
◦ Fixed incorrect elevation for some Personal Weather Stations.
◦ Swipe-to-delete search history items.
◦ "Terrain/Satellite” and other map options made more prominent.
◦ Bug fixes (crashes, visual glitches, and usability enhancements).
◦ Optimized performance across all devices.

The latest version is available to download for iPhone and iPad at https://itunes.apple.com/app/wundermap/id364884105?mt=8.

MH370: China releases satellite images of possible crash site – live

19m
The Chinese agency that published the satellite pictures actually released them Wednesday night local time. In what appears to be something of a big miss, until CNN and the BBC reported the pictures in the past hour, they went pretty much un-noticed.
But the American arm of the Chinese-funded English-language broadcaster, CCTV, tweeted the pictures seven hours ago. The Twitter account of CCTV America, at the time of writing, has 8,226 followers.

Here is the best clue yet about the missing plane as this Chinese satellite caught this image that may appear a large object in South China Sea.

I's like to know what time that shot was taken. If it was at night using IR, there's a large fishing fleet in the Gulf of Thailand that uses booms with really bright lights to attract squid to the surface. It's really strange looking when you're at sea. That image looks like one of those fishing boats if it's an IR shot. The size given by the Chinese would also be consistent with a fishing boat.

Here is more information with link of the latest about the Chinese image:

A Chinese satellite looking into the mysterious disappearance of Malaysia Airlines Flight 370 "observed a suspected crash area at sea," a Chinese government agency said -- a potentially pivotal lead into what has been a frustrating search for the Boeing 777.

China's State Administration for Science, Technology and Industry for National Defense announced the discovery, including images of what it said were "three suspected floating objects and their sizes." The objects aren't small at 13 by 18 meters (43 by 59 feet), 14 by 19 meters and 24 by 22 meters.

The images were captured on March 9 -- which was the day after the plane went missing -- but weren't released until Wednesday.

The Chinese agency gave coordinates of 105.63 east longitude, 6.7 north latitude, which would put it in waters northeast of where it took off in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, and south of Vietnam.

Link

We'll have to see how this turns out. If these were observed Monday, there are certainly no longer at those coordinates and may have already sunk. Still, the initial location is consistent with the MH370 flight path, and the Chinese have some pretty expert satellite interpreters.

Nice to see that the Chinese are helping and actually released information, and a photograph, that was probably taken by one of their military survellance or weather birds. Between the US, Russian, and Chinese Satts (both military and commercial), they keep pretty good "eyes" on the Earth.

They might not release/reveal their "highest" resolution images (reading a license plate or newspaper headine) to the public to let the other side know how exactly how good their satt cameras are but this is a great tool for situations exactly like this.

China might have went rogue and released the images own their own due to the frustration with the Malaysia government or withheld the satellite images..CNN is saying they may have given these images to Malaysia days ago and Malaysia didnt act on it or China withheld..which is baffling for each scenario..

If this doesn't turn out to be the remains of the flight (let's hope it's not), then there's an oil rig worker who claims he saw the plane go down in flames and has provided coordinates.

Neither is good news.

. A Severe Thunderstorm Warning remains in effect until 530 PM EDT
for western Guilford... Forsyth and Davidson counties...

at 452 PM EDT... Doppler radar indicated a line of severe
thunderstorms capable of producing damaging wind gusts of 50 to 60
mph. These storms were located along a line extending from 8 miles
north of Belews Creek to 25 miles southwest of Clemmons... moving
east at 45 mph.

Locations impacted include...
Greensboro... Winston-Salem... High Point... Lexington... Belews Creek...
Linwood... Thomasville... Kernersville... Clemmons... Oak Ridge...
Bethania... Lewisville... Summerfield... Stokesdale... midway...
Walkertown... Jamestown... Rural Hall... Arcadia and Monticello.

Precautionary/preparedness actions...

This line of storms has a history of producing wind gusts in excess
of 50 mph across the North Carolina foothills. Seek shelter inside a
sturdy structure now and stay away from windows. Trees weakened from
ice accumulation during the winter storm last week will be
particular susceptible to falling.

I don't ever speculate on tragedies, because it can lead to confusion and a lot of misinformation. But this tragedy does have me a little baffled. Has anyone ever asked the question if anyone has tried to contact any of the passengers cell phones? Just a thought, as I would hope for the best rather than the worse case scenario.

Yes, this sudden and frightening disappearance attracts attention. As there aren't many/any real news available, I've spent several hours today to search the satellite pics of Tomnod. What I've found: many boats, several oil rigs, a large fishing net, a whale (probably) and two oil spills, the larger of them adjacent to one of the rigs, so presumably not from the poor plane ...

Edit: Crowd searching Tomnod already increased to 600.000 people, btw, and "my" whale has been tagged by others as a possible wreckage.

Green is positive and if you look close the FL Penisula extending out into the SW Atlantic are shaded green. I pointed this out as in 2009 we had a no named system that dumped 2' to 3' of rain over parts of eastern FL in May that year which was an El-Nino year.
