Epsilon sets new records

Epsilon has now remained a hurricane for five days, making it the longest lived December hurricane on record. The previous record was just over four days, set by an unnamed 1887 hurricane. Epsilon has been a hurricane long enough to push the Hurricane Season of 2005 into sixth place for the most number of days a hurricane has been present--50.25 days. The record is 1893, with 72 days. If Epsilon can hang around until the 4 pm advisory on Friday, 2005 will tie 1995 for the second highest number of days with a named storm in the Atlantic, 120.5. The record is 136 named storm days in 1933. Not bad for a storm that was expected to be a remnant low four days ago, according to the first NHC forecast predicting its demise!

Epsilon is not done with us yet--the satellite presentation looks excellent, and there is still no sign that the strong westerly winds associated with a trough just to the cyclone's west are beginning to shear the storm apart. This is expected to happen on Thursday and Friday, but we've heard that before! The current best guess is that Epsilon will be destroyed by wind shear from the trough by Saturday. However, several models are indicating that Epsilon may reform into an extratropical low pressure system west of the Azores Islands early next week, then drift southwestward and gradually acquire tropical characteristics, potentially becoming a tropical storm again. There is also a slight chance a tropical storm could form in the ocean waters just north of Panama next week. Overall, I estimate that there is a 30% chance we'll be watching an Atlantic tropical storm at this time next week, either Epsilon or Zeta.

Wow! That's the first time I've ever seen a hurricane have a heart attack! She died quickly!

In answer to a previous question, "what happens if a hurricane crosses the equator":

Hurricanes don’t cross the equator, the Coriolis force that creates them is too weak near the equator, and hence they don’t get created in a ~10 degree band around the equator…

The Coriolis force getting larger the further you are from the equator also causes the winds of the hurricane/cyclone furthest from the equator to move faster which due to Bernoulli’s principle creates a lower pressure region that pulls the hurricane/cyclone away from the equator.

If one did start heading towards the equator then the Coriolis force would get weaker as it travelled further and hence the storm would weaken - if it crossed the equator the Coriolis force would start pushing it in reverse and slow the winds down until it was no more.

Good morning,
I am now at work again. At home my computer or my Comcast service has been on the outs since Tuesday so I could not post to see what was going on since Tuesday morning! (almost 2 days without pc at home!)
Glad to see this storm is ending. Thanks to all of your for watching this.

Likely not the end.

Epsilon is gone, and I'm going to dissipate her to a non-convective remnant low.

Looks like my prediction of Epslion surviving through the night was indeed wrong. Could be nothing left of her tomorow morning if that shear keeps up.

it is really getting chewed up by those northwesterlies - the convection is way to the southeast of the low-level circulation

Wow...Haydn,

LOL...that's talent...no doubt you are gifted musically as well.:)

I see you play he piano, my mom used to play it often ast night. I would simply lay in bed and enjoy it played well. Then I tried it once and decided I should stick to listening to it instead. Honestly, the only musical instruments I play well are the CD player. My wife doesn't even want me to sing in the shower.

Shes very sweet, she says I do have a good voice but that I just don't know how to use it.:)LOL

yep i agree hayden. and this is their first forecast as well. last year's first outlook was only slightly above average; how wrong were they??!!!!??? i do belive we will see at least those numbers if not more. concerning storms turning out to sea, we will have to wait for next season. in the past 2 years we have seen an unusually strong ridge of high pressure in the atlantic that has blocked turns out to sea for many cyclones and have steered them into the carribbean and towards the u.s.

lol chaser i said 50:50 about zeta too. i think it will be subtropical if it does form in the central atlantic, then it is anyone's guess where it will go. my guess is south and then southwest with a recurve back to the northeast, but its all guessing really lol.
