A dramatic greening of the Arctic over the past 30 years

A remarkable transformation in the vegetation of the Arctic has occurred over the past 30 years, according to a study of satellite data published on March 10, 2013, in Nature Climate Change. The authors found that Arctic vegetation growth and temperatures in 2011 resembled what occurred 250 - 430 miles farther to the south back in 1982. That's the approximate distance in latitude between San Francisco and San Diego, or Washington D.C. and Atlanta. More greening occurred in Eurasia than North America, and the Arctic's new greenness is visible on the ground as an increasing abundance of tall shrubs and trees. Large patches of vigorously productive vegetation now span a third of the northern landscape, an area about equal to the contiguous United States. "Higher northern latitudes are getting warmer, Arctic sea ice and the duration of snow cover are diminishing, the growing season is getting longer and plants are growing more," said co-author Dr. Ranga Myneni of Boston University's Department of Earth and Environment, in a NASA press release. "In the north's Arctic and boreal areas, the characteristics of the seasons are changing, leading to great disruptions for plants and related ecosystems." The changes in the Arctic's vegetation are being driven by human-caused global warming, which is occurring in the Arctic at more than double the rate of the rest of the planet. This so-called "Arctic amplification" is due, in part, to the increased melting of ice and snow near the pole. When ice and snow melt, they uncover darker surfaces underneath, which absorb more sunlight and increase Arctic temperatures in a vicious cycle which melts even more ice and snow. Using 17 climate models, the researchers predicted that a continuation of warming in the Arctic in coming decades could lead to over a 1300 mile latitudinal shift in Arctic vegetation zones by the year 2100, compared to the period 1951 - 1980. That's a distance greater than the north-south extent of the contiguous United States. However, more frequent forest fires, increased pest outbreaks, and summertime droughts due to a warming climate might slow down Arctic plant growth.

Figure 1. Of the 10 million square miles (26 million square kilometers) of northern vegetated lands, 34 to 41 percent showed increases in plant growth (green and blue), 3 to 5 percent showed decreases in plant growth (orange and red), and 51 to 62 percent showed no changes (yellow) over the past 30 years. Commentary
One often hears complaints that global warming may be greatly overestimated, due to many temperature sensors being located in increasingly urbanized areas where local "urban heat island" effects are not being properly considered. If this were true (and it isn't), then we would not expect to see "nature's thermometers"--plants and animals--change their behavior and ranges much. But plants and animals are responding in major ways to the warming climate, and the greening of the Arctic is merely one more example of "nature's thermometers" telling us that the planet is warming significantly. Some other examples:

Fall is falling back: During 1982 to 1999, the end of the growing season was delayed by 4.3 days in the Northern Hemisphere. During 2000 to 2008, the end of the growing season was further delayed by an additional 2.3 days. In the U.S., fall now occurs ten days later than it did 30 years ago.

Spring is springing forward: Spring events, like bird and butterfly migrations, flower blooming times, and frog mating, have been advancing by about three days per decade over the past 30 years.

Animals are changing migration patterns: New species have colonized previously ‘cool’ regions, including sea anemones in Monterey Bay, and lichens and butterflies in Europe. Over the past 50 years, maximum range shifts vary from 200 km (butterflies) to 1,000 km (marine copepods).

Dr. Myneni's petition to protect Earth from climate change
Professor Myneni of Boston University's Department of Earth & Environment, co-author of the greening Arctic study, has developed a simple one-sentence petition that he hopes one billion people will sign by Earth Day, 2014:

Dear Secretary-General of the United Nations Ban Ki-moon,

We, the People of the Earth, request You to act judiciously and expeditiously to protect the Earth from anthropogenic climate change.

Respectfully,
People of the Earth

The petition, which I have signed, is at: https://yourclimatechange.org/, and was recently featured by Discovery News.

ok this is an Honest question from one who isnt following this GW agenda..what exactly are folks trying to warn us about with GW?..the earth has gone thru this many times in the past..hot to cold..cold to hot.......i do understand..coastal cities May be at risk from rising sea levels..and maybe more sever storms....what else?..........and for my own opinion Even if your 100% right on this...no one ON this planet can get all the humans on earth to do something about it..so why...are we even fretting over it?...if it comes it comes..now dont take this as an attack ok..just one mans opinion and question

This website 20 Deadliest Effects of Global Warming gives a more dramatic answer to your question, but the basis is the same science as in the NASA link that Skye gave you.

Also the climate change pages on the WU site have lots of information, as does the Skeptical Science website. In particular, you might want to read this information on the point that climate has changed before.

As to the question "why are we even fretting over it?" - I think the answer is that the possible consequences of unchecked global warming are so disastrous that many of us cannot resign ourselves to it. One example: Higher temperatures and changes in weather patterns can lead to drought and desertification, which in turn can lead to food shortages or famines, which can lead to deaths, "social unrest", and wars. (Oh, you my neighbor still have a source of fresh water? I want it! Attack!)

Another example: coastal cities will be at risk from rising sea levels, but did you know that a number of small island nations are at risk of being destroyed by rising sea levels? You might look at this from the Alliance of Small Island States. Some of these small nations are trying to raise and save money to pay for the relocation of their entire population at such time as their islands become uninhabitable.

These are just examples of why the attitude "if it comes, it comes" just doesn't work.

Largo, I hope this comes across as respectful, because I do respect you for raising these questions and not just brushing off the issue. I understand that you haven't been drenched in this information as I have over the last few months and as some people have for years. I hope you will read some of this information and ask more questions.

Quoting bwi:Some people will see a reduced standard of living if fossil fuel prices rise before the price of alternative transportation options and heating sources is reduced. People will have to shift their consumption patterns to stabilize the atmosphere's CO2 levels (more bikes, less cars!). However, it will be worth the relatively minor hassles of that transition if we can keep the biosphere at a temperature that's compatible with most of current human living patterns!

Tell a residential construction worker to ride a bike to work, because gasoline costs too much, and leave his truck and tool trailer at home.

Are you serious?

Reduced standard of living is a sad understatement.

The economy would crash worse than the Great Depression, as a VERY large number of workers would not even be able to commute to work. You can't expect somebody to ride a bike 15 or 20 miles (or more) each way every day, and not all jobs are in the city in a nice office building.

Haven't seen anything yet though. Just wait until freight trains, semi-trucks, and farm equipment are required to be converted to pure electric. Food and clothing prices will be so high everyone except the top 20% will be back to living in huts with little or no modern technology.

Most Industrialized countries don't pay their UN dues, including the U.S. and Canada. We need to get Stephen Harper out of office in Canada as all our policies are being changed in favour of Oil Companies. Canada is now a country where one MP gets to overrule previous water and pollution standards, the Government follows scientists around and monitors and censors what they publish on Climate Change, and this Government has dropped Kyoto as soon as they came to power 2 years ago. As an Arctic nation Canada is doing major harm and turning back the clock on rational thought.

Dr. Masters: How can you say that the increase in cities and their heat generation has no effect? You muddle the issue about bringing up heat sensors and nature's thermometers....are you saying that the City of Chicago doesn't put off more heat than it receives...and where does that heat go but into the atmosphere?

I'm not a meteorologist, but I can make correlations.

Yeah, I am a GW denier in regards that we shouldn't have to chunk our current way of life to "save the earth". However, we can do a better job of designing our buildings and developments to minimize secondary "man-made" heating.

However, it would have a better debate about temperature measurements and changes if we could just get that 24/7 satellite data for the years 1000 to the mid 1970's or whenever satellite info started to get used. I probably shouldn't hold my breath.

Largo,

In addition to changing the rate of sea level rise, SLR has been happening for a long time, you may have noticed other changes. Not only have the seasons shifted but rainfall patterns are notably changed leading to more wildfires, drought, etc.
Teasing out exactly how much of any event is due to AGW and not weather that would have happened anyway is statistically difficult, i.e. this tornado is 5 m.p.h. faster and lasted 30 seconds longer. But the changes in annual cost to fight forest fires, agricultural damage due to drought, are more easy to monetize.
Are these swings in temperature and CO2 levels something modern society has weathered? No.
Has the planet ever been this hot before? Yes.
What was around back then? Mammoths,Sharks, and Alligators? I'm not sure.

Well first, AGW is a theory with significant evidence to support it. Yes, for some minority of cynical money-grubbing people AGW might be an "agenda" or a money-making opportunity, but to most of us it's just the best possible explanation for the evidence we've collected. To ask about the "global warming agenda" is similar to asking about the "gravity agenda" or the "relativity agenda". Money can be made on those things too, but that doesn't mean the theory itself is sinister.

On to your question as to why we might fret over it, I believe the majority of the fretting and calls for activity rest in the hypothesis that our current climate cycle is influenced by human activities and the trajectory of our climate under human influence is expected to lead to severe financial and social hardship, and finally, this is key, that a change in our activities may help to slow or stop the current warming trend and stabilize our climate.

Personally, I do believe the observed warming is due to human activity because that's what the majority of the professionals studying it have concluded and I have no evidence to contradict their conclusions. However, like you, I am skeptical that any real change is feasible because of human nature being what it is (namely - comfortable creatures are generally resistant to parting with their comforts). Of course, I also agree with the folks who say that if all the AGW stuff ends up being wrong then our anti-GW efforts will still have reduced pollution and improved efficiency and that's a good thing. So, I say if we can clean up coal power plants, improve vehicle fuel mileage, and reduce home power usage then why not?

Still, I believe our efforts would be best directed at addressing the many challenges that will surely result from a change in climate, whatever may cause that change. In other words - I'd like to see us focus primarily on adapting to climate change, and secondarily on trying to stop it altogether. For instance, our myriad political borders, land ownership laws, and immigration policies effectively prevent people from just "moving to a better location" when something like sea level rise or drought forces them off their land. We must address this or there will be endless war. Similarly, because of population growth and just plain silly practices (like growing Kentucky Bluegrass in Arizona) drought and water scarcity are real hazards for the human race even with a stable climate. If we could re-adopt the practices of our ancestors who tailored their lifestyle to the climate they lived in then it won't matter as much which way the climate goes because we'll be ready for it. So... smartly designed adobe houses with no lawn in Arizona, structural reinforcement and stilts for houses in coastal areas, smart placement of windows and landscaping in homes EVERYWHERE, etc...

Humans ARE good at adapting, but we're also very resistant to change. We can't have it both ways...

I respectfully differ; The UN is not useless if you look at the history and many of it's accomplishments over the past several decades in terms of border disputes, sanctions, aid issues, and peacekeeping efforts.

The point is that the UN is a good clearing and management house for airing out international issues and disputes but has done a much better job at aggression issues. More recently, we have seen global scientists under UN auspices addressing climate change issues through UN reports and research and it has become a front burner issue.

The problem is that GW issues, when juxtaposed against national "rights" to industrialize, present unique challenges on a global scale..... With that being said, we can never give up the fight to try to get the member nations to develop the political will to act.

All humans don't have to change to slow down or stabilize global warming. Humans whose lifestyles release lots of previously sequestered carbon into the atmosphere DO need to change lifestyles, or else the livability of many parts of the earth will be diminished for humans.

The scientific consensus has been that limiting the global temperature increase to 2 degrees C should prevent the worst of the damage (drought, sea rise, agricultural problems etc.) To do that, the advanced and the rapidly industrializing economies' use of coal, oil, and gas for fuel needs to be significantly reduced.

It's really not that hard to do, and won't reduce our standards of living much to switch to less suburban sprawl and auto-dependent lifestyles, and more "green" energy production (wind, solar etc.) Electric costs will go up some as we scrub out carbon emissions when there is no plausible substitute for carbon-based energy sources.

However, government policies continue to subsidize fossil fuel production and excessive energy using lifestyles (want to build McMansions on farmland? -- no problem, the government will build free roads and sewers!). Governments refuse to require fossil fuel use to be taxed in proportion to its economic damage (not just from global warming, but also regular old air and water pollution). It's called taxing the negative social externality, and it's standard economics, but we don't do it in the US for fossil fuel use like we do with tobacco or alcohol use.

There are downsides to conserving energy and leaving carbon in the ground. Fossil fuel company shareholders would suffer if we didn't give them free rights to extract oil and coal and gas from public lands, but instead chose not to allow mining or drilling.

Some people will see a reduced standard of living if fossil fuel prices rise before the price of alternative transportation options and heating sources is reduced. People will have to shift their consumption patterns to stabilize the atmosphere's CO2 levels (more bikes, less cars!). However, it will be worth the relatively minor hassles of that transition if we can keep the biosphere at a temperature that's compatible with most of current human living patterns!

Severe weather and possible tornadoes in the south, especially across southern AL into southwest GA later this afternoon!

Blizzard conditions in the northern Plains, and an intensifying coastal storm could drop 10-18" of new snow in the mountains of New England.

The CHAOS continues into March! STAY SAFE and stay tuned for updates.

I thought TA said it would be quiet.

That huge subtropical bubble of air associated with the Greenland Omega Block is responsible for that absurdly anomalous temp.

Could that be from a downslope wind? Somehow NW Greenland and subtropical don't go together.

Thanks Dr. Good synopsis of the Arctic greening issue and good stats on fall/spring timetables and migration patterns (subjects many of us have been informally observing around us for the past 10 years or more)....We normally get Monarch butterflies migrations into the Florida Big Bend (coastal St. Marks Wildlife Refuge) around November and they have been coming in a little later into December the past few years.

On the Petition, the UN is a good place to start but we really need to put greater pressure on the industrialized nations to sign on to some of the international treaties on emissions (think Kyoto)and good luck with China and the US with big oil/energy/industry on the opposite side of the spectrum.

Without real "power" in the UN (other than sanctions from the Security Counsel for physical aggression) gonna be hard to turn the boat around (or stop it for that matter).

Time for Klaatu on that one to put some pressure on the industrialized nations of the Earth......

This argument gets old. Nothing is going to happen and the UN is USELESS!

Here's a few answers from NASA: Link

As for what to do about it- well, you have to start somewhere. I think it was proven back in the 60's and 70's that if enough people clamor for change, eventually someone in charge will do something about the issue. So yes, enough someones can make the few take action if the few plan to keep their income. Maybe I'm idealistic, but I'm sure inaction will accomplish nothing.

Wow. Impressive considering the avg high is normally about 5 to 10 below and the highs hit 40+ in that bubble.

That's my guess and it may not be able to handle it. OR, someone doesn't
want it to stay up. Very sinister but possible.
or maybe... (slowly raises eyebrows) someone wants you to think that some wants you to think someone is trying to crash it!
