Tornadoes rip through Dallas metro area

At least three tornadoes have ripped through the Dallas metro area this afternoon, one passing between Dallas and Fort Worth, bearing down on the Dallas-Fort Worth airport but narrowly missing to the east. The other two tornadoes passed east of Dallas, one touching down near the town of Forney, where there were reports of impacts to the high school. The DFW airport issued a ground stop for all incoming flights and grounded all planes at their airports, and a spokesman said they were sheltering passengers. The airport is now closed while they inspect the planes for hail damage, and can accept no incoming flights for lack of a place to put them.

Residential neighborhoods were completely destroyed in the Arlington tornado, and tractor trailers were tossed like toys. Extensive damage was done to the Green Oaks nursing home and rehab center, which is just east of Lake Arlington. The Arlington tornado was on the ground for approximately 30 minutes. In addition to the tornadoes, trained storm spotters were reporting hail up to three inches in diameter, which is approximately the size of a baseball.

The mayor and city council of Arlington, Texas declared a state of disaster for the city when, just an hour after the tornado had passed through, it was obvious that the area had sustained incredible damage.

Tornado warnings continue to be issued, and the potential for severe thunderstorms with and tornadoes will continue through the evening in eastern Texas, Oklahoma, southern Arkansas, and Louisiana. The convective outlook paints a good picture of the tornado potential for the rest of the evening. If you're in one of these regions, stay alert for tornado watches or warnings that may be issued.

Trying hard here to concentrate and determine a location I feel something from New Madrid, something else from Yellowstone, and yet another feeling from Hawaii. No scientific backing up of this, just me going out and sitting in a field trying to get in tune with the natural world. Maybe I'm wrong and time will tell, otherwise maybe I'm the next internationally famous psychic lol.

If you look up you'll see the moon is waxing.
Maybe that's it.

Ref posts 88 and 90. Sort of like waiting for the "other shoe to drop".

There's some pretty bad stuff going on right now.
Wish I knew more but what I do know is it's been hot here in Florida earlier than ever this year and it never really got cold all winter.
Today around Sanford, Florida, my digital car thermometer registered 96 degrees. Hard to believe, but there it was. Am thinking because it's a Fiesta (lowest end Ford) it's measuring the temperature on the roof, dunno.

If it's an earthquake your feeling it better not be along the Cascadia Fault.
Little too close to home.

Insured losses due to thunderstorms and tornadoes in the U.S. in 2011 dollars.

After April 2011 saw records set for most tornadoes in a month and in 24 hours, I examined the link in great detail here, looking at the data, the literature, and expert analysis. That piece concluded:
When discussing extreme weather and climate, tornadoes should not be conflated with the other extreme weather events for which the connection is considerably more straightforward and better documented, including deluges, droughts, and heat waves.
Just because the tornado-warming link is more tenuous doesn’t mean that the subject of global warming should be avoided entirely when talking about tornadoes. LINK

So would that mean that once storms get into the gulf they are going to "explode"?

Depends on the environment and how fast it is moving.

did anyone read Joe Bastardi 2012 ATL outlook YET ?

RE: post 52 - You are correct. The ratio of the surface area to the mass is pretty high and the trailers are obviously empty.

My best guess is that the rear doors were also open. That would easily explain their 200 ft plus vertical flight and was my original assumption. However, I have not been able to verify that with the video I have observed.

Since this is an unusual recorded occurrence, the WISE engineers at TTU will do a frame by frame analysis of the video. Their damage assessment analyses are superb and usually refute every comment the TV folks make. For example, the Jarrell TX 1997 tornado stripped the slabs clean. This was not so much a function of wind speed as it was a combination of poor construction (the sill plates were fastened to the slab at 24" o.c. with a single case hardened nail) and the fact the tornado went through a scrap yard that shredded metal immediately prior to entering the neighborhood that was destroyed.

All please remember that all the advance warning in world will not protect you without a safe place to go. Stay safe with keepSafe safe rooms.

I've always wanted to be in a minor-moderate earthquake. I know we had one a few days before Irene, but we were outside at lunch at school and didn't feel anything.

22 ncstorm: Why would anyone take cover at a gas station near fuel pumps during a tornado?

If the pumps get ripped out before you pay for your fillup, you get to keep the the gas for free.

Otherwise folks couldn't afford to drive their gas hogs chasing storms all over the country.

local media of Dallas is tweeting that tornado that lifted up the trailers was EF4/5, which made me laugh because there's no way it's that strong judging the damage on the ground. I'll say EF2/3 but I haven't seen too much of pictures though. DO NOT ASSUME THE RATINGS OF TORNADOES UNTIL NWS MAKES IT OFFICIAL.
