I was in China in 1986, long before they started emerging as a manufacturing power. Their major cities looked like what is in the picture back then. Lots of soft coal used for electricity, heating and transportation. The trains were pulled by coal-fired steam engines.

As China spurted into the role as the world's leading producer they put production ahead of environment.

We, in the US, did exactly the same thing. Go back and look at the condition of our country prior to the environmental movement that arose in the last half of the 1900s. We filled our cites with air you could chew and we set our rivers on fire. We dumped massive amounts of toxic waste that we are still cleaning up.

Again - no one wants the government (us) to control everything. All any of us want is just enough control.

This is true. And someday China hopes to clean it up. It's really American companies who have opened shop in China because of lax labor and environmental regulations and the people who consume the products they sell that have made the mess. So America, it's time to fix the mess. Bring the jobs back home and learn to comply with the regulations.

Surprised the Storm Prediction Center has not issued a 10% tornado across the eastern Texas panhandle and eastern Oklahoma. Could have several tornadoes there..

I wonder how the tornado and hurricane seasons will be like this year. Based on current temperature trends we may be headed for quite the year in weather.

This system will have a few surprises in store for us. I am sure of it.

This season's tornado season has already been...abnormally active. More so than last year at this time.

Probably will not last as we head into April and the monster outbreaks we got last year eclipses this year, but still...it's not a good sign.

I've went through and counted the average number of high risks each year...Looks like we still have 4-5 more to go.

They should rename it hurricane apocalypse, my gosh, I'm surprised Ive never heard of that hurricane before, that is unreal, and very disturbing...

Some of these figures are amazing, the obvious question for some of us in the far away, is?
How far up into Canada are these temp anomalies going as the maps and charts being posted seem to stop at the US, Canada boarder! As the warm winds won't take any notice of national boundaries, at least in this case; whats happening around Hudson bay and to the East of there.
A lot of snow must have gone into "shock melt" with all this warming out of normal season, so to say.

China, of whom you seem to be so enamoured of, also has one of the worst "human rights" records there is. Each couple is allowed only one child with forced abortions to enforce it. Barbaric! Also if the state sees talent in your child, they can and will take it and raise it as they see fit against the wishes of the parents. Great place. China is starting to work on their problems. The Chinese people have moved past the point where just getting enough food each day is a struggle. They are now starting to look at quality of life issues.

Well that's the problem, granted China is far worse than us on the pollution issue but most people have to focus their earnings on just putting food on the table before they can even deal with going green.



Here in America though, there are many wealthy who could invest in electric vehicles. For example, the company Tesla offers electric cars which if I was wealthy, I would buy one in a heartbeat over luxury cars using the same old, outdated internal combustion engine that dirties our air every day.

I'm not knocking his age, but there are just some limitations of such a young age that are part of brain development, I wanted so bad to grow up and be responsible at that age, but as much as I worked at it, there are some things to learn and understand that come with age alone. Well, someone can come of age and STILL not learn but that's a subject for a different time :)

I listened to This American Life's hour-long program on how they screwed up the Apple factory story by not adequately fact-checking the guy who did the reporting.

Something that they reported at the end was that if the iPad were to be manufactured in the US the labor-caused cost to Apple would rise as little as $10/unit.

China isn't getting a lot of the manufacturing that it is these days due to low labor costs, but because they have built a manufacturing support stream that the US doesn't have.

We can compete, but we've got to invest in our manufacturing processes to do so.

It's extremely unlikely that we can return manufacturing to America based on an appeal to national pride/whatever. Folks are going to continue to shop more on cost/value than on where the product is made. We've got to catch up with China on how we manufacture.

movement and size ofa hurricane matter with damage. hurricane ike had a category 4 storm surge, yet a cat 2. everything is not by the books. i am not judging what category it is and its really not worth and arguement. So lose the attitude because i am not engaging it.
