Nation's Icebox basks in 77°F warmth
Posted by: Dr. Jeff Masters, 1:08 PM GMT on March 18, 2012 +32
Each year, when the list of coldest U.S. cities is compiled, International Falls, Minnesota regularly winds up at the top of the list, earning its title as "Icebox of the Nation". The city once hit -55°F (on January 6, 1909), and takes pride in the distinction of being the coldest city in the U.S., having trademarked the term "Icebox of the Nation" in 1948. The city recently defended the trademark against the town of Fraser, Colorado, which sought to usurp the title as the Nation's Icebox. But yesterday, International Falls set a truly phenomenal weather record for warmth. The city's temperature soared to 77°F, which was 42° above the average high temperature for the date. Not only was it the city's hottest March temperature on record by 4°, it was just 4° shy of yesterday's high in Miami, Florida. But what was truly amazing is that the 77°F high in International Falls beat the previous record for the date by 22°! I talked to Christopher C. Burt, wunderground's weather historian, and he couldn't recall seeing a station with a century-plus period of weather records break a daily record by such a wide margin (International Falls' records go back to 1895.) Yesterday's temperatures in International Falls were but one chapter in the on-going story of one of the most extreme meteorological events in U.S. history. Never before has such an extended period of extreme and record-breaking warm temperatures affected such a large portion of the U.S. in March, going back to the beginning of record keeping in the late 1800s. The record-breaking warmth will continue through Thursday, and I'll have much more to say in Monday's post.

This storm reportedly was blowing cannons around. Some experts believe the winds were in excess of 200 mph..The Great Hurricane persisted near Barbados for about two days, producing violent winds which were described as "so deafening that people could not hear their own voices." The winds stripped the bark off trees before the hurricane downed every tree on the island.[2] This phenomenon has not been observed in any of the strongest modern-day tropical cyclones, so, according to meteorologist Dr. Jose Millas, for it to have been done by winds and rain alone would require winds over 200 mph (320 km/h).[7] The winds also destroyed every house on Barbados. Most ships at the bay broke free of their moorings from the hurricane's rough surf and all forts on the island were destroyed.[2] The winds and seas moved heavy cannons about 100 feet (30 m). About 4,500 people died on the island.[7]

In Saint Vincent, the hurricane destroyed 584 of the 600 houses in Kingstown. At Grenada, 19 Dutch ships were wrecked. On Saint Lucia, rough waves and a strong storm tide destroyed the fleet of British Admiral Rodney at Port Castries, with one ship destroying the city's hospital by being lifted on top of it. The hurricane destroyed all but two houses at Port Castries, and throughout the island about 6,000 perished.[2]

A fleet of 40 French ships involved in the American Revolutionary War capsized as a result of the hurricane off Martinique; about 4,000 soldiers drowned. The hurricane produced a 25-foot (7.6 m) storm surge on Martinique, destroying all houses in Saint-Pierre; 9,000 died on the island. Severe damage was reported on Dominica, Guadeloupe, Antigua, and Saint Kitts, though it is unknown if any died on those islands. Additionally, many ships were washed ashore on Saint Kitts. A powerful storm surge affected the island of Sint Eustatius, causing 4,000 to 5,000 fatalities.[2]

Heavy damage was reported in southern Puerto Rico, primarily in Cabo Rojo and Lajas. Severe damage also occurred in the eastern region of Santo Domingo. The hurricane later grounded 50 ships near Bermuda. Throughout its path, the hurricane killed over 20,000 people, possibly as high as 24,000, making it the deadliest hurricane in Atlantic hurricane history.[2][3]

it doesnt take 200mph windspeeds to do all of that, deafening roar, grounding ships, moving cannons...Hurricane Ike could have done that, lol :D

I believe what he ment was, chinas government wanted to be a world super power so they did it at ALL cost which is why it got polluted. The government controlling anything must be we must be cautious of. IMO

I was in China in 1986, long before they started emerging as a manufacturing power. Their major cities looked like what is in the picture back then. Lots of soft coal used for electricity, heating and transportation. The trains were pulled by coal-fired steam engines.

As China spurted into the role as the world's leading producer they put production ahead of environment.

We, in the US, did exactly the same thing. Go back and look at the condition of our country prior to the environmental movement that arose in the last half of the 1900s. We filled our cites with air you could chew and we set our rivers on fire. We dumped massive amounts of toxic waste that we are still cleaning up.

Again - no one wants the government (us) to control everything. All any of us want is just enough control.

Goldilocks Regulations.

Over the last few years China has closed about 10,000 of their least-efficient, dirtiest coal plants. The coal plants which they have built are state of the art, efficient, clean (as possible with coal) plants.

China just placed a cap on how much coal can be burned in the entire country. The cap will go into effect in 2015 and means that any further energy production will have to be something other than coal.

China has become the major installer of wind power. Their wind/capita ration puts the US to shame.

China has become a major installer of solar power. China is setting solar installation records.

China has begun to install massive banks of storage batteries in order to assist their wind and solar generation.

China has just begun a major effort to put a lot of electric cars on their roads, including subsidizing EVs and installing charge stations.

We in the US need to worry more about the way we do business, about our contribution to climate change. We, per capita, are the world's villains.

This is true. And someday China hopes to clean it up. It's really American companies who have opened shop in China because of lax labor and environmental regulations and the people who consume the products they sell that have made the mess. So America, it's time to fix the mess. Bring the jobs back home and learn to comply with the regulations.

This season's tornado season has already been...abnormally active. More so than last year at this time.

Probably will not last as we head into April and the monster outbreaks we got last year eclipses this year, but still...it's not a good sign.

I've went through and counted the average number of high risks each year...Looks like we still have 4-5 more to go.

Pellston, MI, reached 80 a short time ago. That beats the record for the date of 58 by 22 degrees, the same margin as the International Falls record of which Dr. Masters wrote. It's also ties yesterday for the warmest ever March day there. (The Pelliston forecast for Tuesday calls for a high of 82. The record high for that day is 55, so reaching that would mean breaking the record by a margin of 27 degrees.)

Some of these figures are amazing, the obvious question for some of us in the far away, is?
How far up into Canada are these temp anomalies going as the maps and charts being posted seem to stop at the US, Canada boarder! As the warm winds won't take any notice of national boundaries, at least in this case; whats happening around Hudson bay and to the East of there.
A lot of snow must have gone into "shock melt" with all this warming out of normal season, so to say.

China, of whom you seem to be so enamoured of, also has one of the worst "human rights" records there is. Each couple is allowed only one child with forced abortions to enforce it. Barbaric! Also if the state sees talent in your child, they can and will take it and raise it as they see fit against the wishes of the parents. Great place. Since we're the "villians" please feel free to go live with your heroes. I won't try to stop you.

Sorry, your question makes no sense.

He's asking why China has such a bad smog problem despite how energy efficient they are.

Places in the US used to look like that. Open hearth steel mills used to do that to US cities.

I can remember Gary, Indiana with that sort of air in the 1960s.

China is starting to work on their problems. The Chinese people have moved past the point where just getting enough food each day is a struggle. They are now starting to look at quality of life issues.

Well that's the problem, granted China is far worse than us on the pollution issue but most people have to focus their earnings on just putting food on the table before they can even deal with going green.

Here in America though, there are many wealthy who could invest in electric vehicles. For example, the company Tesla offers electric cars which if I was wealthy, I would buy one in a heartbeat over luxury cars using the same old, outdated internal combustion engine that dirties our air every day.

Seriously, who would NOT want to buy one of these? Link

I'm not knocking his age, but there are just some limitations of such a young age that are part of brain development, I wanted so bad to grow up and be responsible at that age, but as much as I worked at it, there are some things to learn and understand that come with age alone. Well, someone can come of age and STILL not learn but that's a subject for a different time :)

I will never forget to bring a pen to school ever again. O_O

In my second desk drawer, I have a box of 12, G2 Pilot pens (with 6 left), plus two cartridge refills in the top drawer. And if I meet someone in need of a pen, I give them one of these on condition they agree to buy the gel refill and not throw the pen away.

This is true. And someday China hopes to clean it up. It's really American companies who have opened shop in China because of lax labor and environmental regulations and the people who consume the products they sell that have made the mess. So America, it's time to fix the mess. Bring the jobs back home and learn to comply with the regulations.

I listened to This American Life's hour-long program on how they screwed up the Apple factory story by not adequately fact-checking the guy who did the reporting.

Something that they reported at the end was that if the iPad were to be manufactured in the US the labor-caused cost to Apple would rise as little as $10/unit.

China isn't getting a lot of the manufacturing that it is these days due to low labor costs, but because they have built a manufacturing support stream that the US doesn't have.

We can compete, but we've got to invest in our manufacturing processes to do so.

It's extremely unlikely that we can return manufacturing to America based on an appeal to national pride/whatever. Folks are going to continue to shop more on cost/value than on where the product is made. We've got to catch up with China on how we manufacture.

Even at 13, it should be obvious that this was a catastrophic storm. You have a very legitimate point, and I should have remembered he is not an adult..:)

Yeah true, well I don't want to keep talking about his age, which would be rude, but you get my point :)

Do me a favor O.K.? Please read this first,...Link ...and then come back with another post saying that this storm was a cat-4, and that cat-4,s do this type of damage. After that, if you still think that the experts are wrong calling this a 5, I will post more relevant information and see if you change your mind then.

movement and size ofa hurricane matter with damage. hurricane ike had a category 4 storm surge, yet a cat 2. everything is not by the books. i am not judging what category it is and its really not worth and arguement. So lose the attitude because i am not engaging it.

Quoting nrtiwlnvragn NWS gearing up.....

I'm on spring break so will get to watch as this latest weather pattern unfolds. Still, one cannot say that any rain, no matter what threats accompany it, is not welcome in the great state of Texas.
