4 out of 5 Americans affected by weather-related disasters since 2006, study finds

Since 2006 , federally declared weather-related disasters in the United States have affected counties housing 242 million people--or roughly four out of five Americans. That's the remarkable finding of Environment America, who last week released a detailed report on extreme weather events in the U.S. The report analyzed FEMA data to study the number of federally declared weather-related disasters. More than 15 million Americans live in counties that have averaged one or more weather-related disasters per year since the beginning of 2006. Ten U.S. counties--six in Oklahoma, two in Nebraska, and one each in Missouri and South Dakota--have each experienced ten or more declared weather-related disasters since 2006. South Carolina was the only state without a weather-related disaster since 2006. The report did a nice job explaining the linkages between extreme weather events and climate change, and concluded, "The increasing evidence linking global warming to certain types of extreme weather events--underscored by the degree to which those events are already both a common and an extremely disruptive fact of life in the United States--suggests that the nation should take the steps needed now to prevent the worst impacts of global warming and to prepare for the changes that are inevitably coming down the road."

Figure 1. County-level map of federally-declared weather-related disasters between 2006 - 2011. Tornadoes and severe thunderstorms in the Midwest, and heavy rains and snows from Nor'easters, hurricanes, and other storms in the Northeast gave those two regions the most disaster declarations. An interactive version of this map that allows one to click and see the individual disasters by county is on the Environment America website.

Ah, seems I was out of the loop a bit. The Zimbabwean dollar was officially discontinued in 2009. Inflation had reached a point where it was practically impossible to calculate (though rough approximations had put inflation over 200,000%/year). They now use foreign currencies as a means of exchange. The last official bill denomination printed was the 100 trillion dollar bill, which was worth less than $300 USD at the time and dropped quite rapidly after it's introduction. It would take an armload of high denomination bills just to buy some groceries. :P

At any rate, printing money to pay off debts is an incredibly bad idea, as you devalue the entire currency base and shoots your economy in the face with a tactical nuke.

If 100 million dollars magically appeared in equal distribute bills in each of 100 different people's living rooms, and they spent the money, it wouldn't effect the value of the dollar one bit.

Additionally, after several transactions and the money changes hands a few times, state and local governments would make millions in revenues from the extra sales tax.

If all the creditors want is dollars, then by all means, give them dollars.

And nobody said anything about printing trillion dollar bills. Lol. That's ridiculous.

At this point, the debt is either an imaginary number that holds no meaning, or else we're screwed anyway.

If it's the former, don't worry about it.

If it's the latter, printing some more money won't hurt anyway.

Obviously the multi-trillion dollar debt is a problem and it will only become more of a problem as the baby boomer generation begins to retire. But if you think printing out excess money will just fix the problem, you are totally wrong. When you print out excess money, the money just becomes less valuable. Not only will it do nothing to fix the problem, it will totally screw over our economy.

Obviously this is a post that has nothing at all to do with weather. Is the debt/economy an issue? Yes. But discuss it on an economic blog and not here.

The U.S. should print $15 trillion in 5, 10, 20, and $100 bills, and just pay back the debts to the banks.

The savings in interest payments alone would pay back the $15 trillion in 25 years, which ironically is much, much faster than tax revenues would ever, EVER realistically pay back the debt, under any conceivable balanced budget.

Without the interest payments, the deficit would be easier to balance.

It's just paper anyway, right?

We owe $15 trillion and nobody has come knocking to collect. I doubt they'd care if we gave them $15 trillion in paper money, since that's better than nothing at all.

Having hundreds of billions of dollars of interest compounding yearly is a terrible idea which is growing worse by the year.

Soon, the entire system is going to collapse anyway if some major overhauls are not put in place.

Chinese already counterfeit our currency anyway.

Why are you convinced printing money somehow devalues it any more than running a permanent 15 trillion dollar debt with compounding interest?

At this rate, in a few more years it will be complete impossible for tax revenues to ever catch back up with spending, under any conceivable budget, that is, if it hasn't already passed that mark presently. A half trillion dollars per year worth of interest will do that to you fast.

We need a system of trade which is based on objective value rather than subjective value; rational principles, instead of sentimentality or fear.

To give you an example of what is wrong and stupid about America, watch an episode of "American Pickers". People will quite literally pay more for a piece of garbage, such as a discarded street sign or some other rubbish, than they will for legitimate goods or services.

This is the same way the stock market functions.

What kind of rational civilization functions this way? It's absurd.

Only 1 trillion us dollars in circulation today it increases between 50-100 billion a year.
That already way to much.

Well the last estimate on inflation with that specific currency was a doubling rate of 1.3 days. That is INSANE. I don't even know how you are able to mess the economy that bad (Hungry was able to do better...well I guess worse with a doubling rate of 15.6 hours.)

I have to admit your understanding of economics is the funniest thing I'v ever seen. I hope you are just young and uninformed. Try to read up on inflation some . Also with your comment on American Pickers is that while the material they are made of is not worth much the collector value is. Also check out supply and demand.

Wow... Just wow.....Zimbabwean dollar

The Zimbabwean dollar (sign: $, or Z$ to distinguish it from other dollar-denominated currencies) was the official currency of Zimbabwe from 1980 to 12 April 2009.

Although the dollar was considered to be among the highest valued currency units when it was introduced in 1980 to replace the Rhodesian dollar at a ratio of 1:1, political turmoil and hyperinflation rapidly eroded the value of the Zimbabwe dollar to become one of the least valued currency units in the world, undergoing three redenominations, with paper denominations including a $100 trillion banknote.[3] The third redenomination produced the "fourth dollar" (ZWL) which was worth 1 trillion ZWR (third dollar) and 10 septillion "first dollar" ZWD, so overall the ratio of the redenominations was 103 × 1010 × 1012 = 1025.

==discussion==
A low pressure system is expected to develop over the American plains
on Thursday and track eastward across Southern Ontario on Friday.
The leading edge of snow associated with this low pressure system
should move into the extreme southwestern regions Thursday evening
and reach the Quebec border by Friday morning. Current indications
suggest that snowfall amounts in the 10 to 15 cm range are likely
within an 18 to 24 hour period. Regions just north of Lake Erie and
Lake Ontario will likely see rain at times mixed with the snow and
end up with less snowfall.

In addition, for regions along and south of a line from Southern Lake
Huron to Kingston, brief periods of freezing rain are possible
Thursday evening and overnight into Friday morning.

There is still a considerable amount of uncertainty with regards to
the exact track and intensity of this low pressure system.
Environment Canada will continue to monitor the development closely.

The public is advised to monitor future forecasts and warnings as
warnings may be required or extended.

Please monitor the latest forecasts and warnings from Environment
Canada at www.weatheroffice.gc.ca

HAIL AND WIND DAMAGE WILL BE POSSIBLE. WW ISSUANCE MAY BE NECESSARY
ACROSS THE REGION.

A LINE OF STRONG THUNDERSTORMS IS ONGOING ALONG AN AXIS OF

CREATE A WIND DAMAGE THREAT ESPECIALLY AS THE LINE BECOMES NEARLY
CONTINUOUS. SUPERCELLS WITH AN ISOLATED TORNADO THREAT MAY ALSO
EXIST ON THE SRN END OF THE LINE WHERE INSTABILITY IS MAXIMIZED AND

Looks like WFO MRX's severe thunderstorm watch... er, I mean, warning, has expired.

I don't believe it was the largest warning yet issued. I believe that goes to WFO Bismarck, ND, within the last few years.

So far, no verification on IEM Cow:

Evening, Not a whole lot in Zephyrhills. Did get .50 of rain and a little wind. Heavy stuff as usual went north of me. Looks like Orlando area did fairly good with the rain.

quite possibly the worst post of the year

please excuse my blunt response, but you propose these solutions like they are some sort of brilliant idea that nobody has ever thought of. Truth is printing out 15 trillion dollars is a terrible idea. Terrible.
Lol so true just ask some African countries how that went.

The U.S. should print $15 trillion in 5, 10, 20, and $100 bills, and just pay back the debts to the banks.

Injury is caused by instantaneous acceleration, not velocity or average acceleration.

If the train came to a full stop while everyone else in the on-board reference frame kept moving forward and hit the seats in front of them, they'd experience only an average of 7.11 m/s^2 acceleration if the collision happened over a period of 1 second.

However, that's not how it works. The energy is distributed in a fraction of a second, a few hundredths of a second or less, which can produce maybe 70g of instantaneous acceleration, which is what breaks bones, impales, and crushes internal organs, etc,
Nope, that is not what happened here.

A train doesn't go from 16mph to 0 mph in a hundredth of a second. The problem here is the train has a very high inertia (due to it's mass), this makes it so that the train doesn't stop right away. Instead, as the first train car hits the object, the following cars maintain their motion and continue to collide for several seconds.

That is what Neapolitan was trying to demonstrate with the F=ma equation...the train has a very high mass, therefore it is very hard to stop, despite it's slow speed. This means the train isn't jerking to a complete stop in a split second, instead it's still moving for a while as the train cars crash into each other. The great force of the train then causes tiny little humans to be crushed, not the sudden jerk.
