Tornado kills ten in Mississippi

A powerful 1/2 to 1-mile wide tornado cut a path of enormous destruction across the state of Mississippi yesterday, killing at least ten and injuring dozens. It was the deadliest tornado in the U.S. since May 10, 2008, when an EF-4 tornado killed 22 people in Oklahoma and Missouri. The damage I've seen so far from photos of yesterday's tornado appears to be mainly of the EF-3 variety, though we will have to wait for the official damage surveys to be sure. The supercell thunderstorm that spawned the tornado or family of tornadoes maintained a continuous circulation from the time the tornado first touched down in Louisiana near the Mississippi border until the tornado reached the Alabama border. This is an extremely rare occurrence. If the 188-mile path of destruction across Mississippi was from a single tornado, it would rank as one of the longest tracks by a single tornado on record. The record of 219 miles is held by the deadliest tornado of all time, the great Tri-State Tornado of 1925 (though there is some dispute over whether this was one tornado or a family of tornadoes.) Our severe weather expert Dr. Rob Carver has a more complete analysis and imagery of yesterday's tornadoes.

Figure 1. Doppler radar storm-relative velocity of the mile-wide tornado that affected Yazoo City, Mississippi On April 24, 2010. This is an unusually wide and strong circulation for a supercell thunderstorm.

More severe weather expected today along the East Coast
The Storm Prediction Center (SPC) outlined a "Slight Risk" region of concern for severe weather today along the East Coast, from Maryland to Northern Florida. Yesterday, SPC had Mississippi underneath the first "High Risk" area of severe weather concern for the year. As usual, you can follow today's severe weather outbreak with our interactive tornado page and our severe weather page..

Figure 2. Severe weather reports for Saturday. Note the long line of red tornado reports extending across the state of Mississippi. These reports originated from a single supercell thunderstorm that spawned one or more tornadoes that carved out a 188-mile lone path of destruction across the state. A quick line of storm clouds came over Lawrence around 7pm. I forgot to change my ISO back after shooting eagles earlier in low light thus a noisy shot.

Its about to get REALLY crazy here on the west cost of pinellas!
I would not be surprised if your area receives wind gusts over 60 mph with that cluster. Possible waterspout wouldnt be out of the question either.

Hey Jedkins! I'm in southern Pinellas and it's getting real noisy out there towards the Gulf.

yeah watch out! I'm a meteorology student, I'm pretty concerned at those cells off to our southwest, some of them have storm tops over 50,000 ft! That being said, they're tapping bigtime into the jet dynamics overhead, if they stay at that intensity, prepare for severe weather!

Even still, if not severe, at least prepare for a July like storm with amazing lightning activity and blinding rain

Good thing I chose to run the sprinklers today, this line won't be here by morning, that's for sure.

To: U.S. West Coast, Alaska, and British Columbia coastal regions
From: NOAA/NWS/West Coast and Alaska Tsunami Warning Center
Subject: Tsunami Information Statement #1 issued 04/25/2010 at 8:09PM PDT

A strong earthquake has occurred, but a tsunami IS NOT expected along the California, Oregon, Washington, British Columbia, or Alaska coast. NO tsunami warning, watch or advisory is in effect for these areas.

Based on the earthquake magnitude and historic tsunami records, a damaging tsunami IS NOT expected along the California, Oregon, Washington, British Columbia, and Alaska coasts. At coastal locations which have experienced strong ground shaking, local tsunamis are possible due to underwater landslides.

At 8:00 PM Pacific Daylight Time on April 25, an earthquake with preliminary magnitude 6.5 occurred southeast of Taiwan . (Refer to the United States Geological Survey for official earthquake parameters.)

The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center in Ewa Beach, Hawaii will issue messages for Hawaii and other areas of the Pacific outside California, Oregon, Washington, British Columbia, and Alaska.

This will be the only statement issued for this event by the West Coast/Alaska Tsunami Warning Center unless conditions warrant. See the WCATWC web site for basic tsunami information, safety rules, and a tsunami travel time map and table. (NOTE: Travel time maps and tables indicate forecasted times only, not that a wave was generated.)

Those are some scary storms down there. This evening's Tampa wx discussion seems a bit off

from 9:30 p.m. Sunday:

.DISCUSSION...STORMS HAVE WEAKENED SOME WITH NO WARNINGS CURRENTLY
IN EFFECT. AREAS OF RAIN/SHOWERS OVER MOST OF WEST CENTRAL FL AND
THE ADJACENT GULF CONTAIN SCATTERED THUNDERSTORMS. EXPECT THESE TO
CONTINUE THROUGHOUT THE NIGHT AS THE ENTIRE AREA SAGS SOUTHWARD.
FORECASTS ON TRACK AND WILL NOT UPDATE NOW.

Yeah, they always issue tornado watches when storms weaken like that.....lol
