Typhoon Ketsana slammed into Vietnam this morning as a Category 2 typhoon with 105 mph winds. Ketsana brought sustained winds of 55 mph, gusting to 71 mph to Da Nang Vietnam. Heavy rainfall amounts of 7.2" and 9.1" were observed at Da Nang, and Hue, respectively, over the past two days. Floods and landslides in Vietnam from Ketsana's heavy rains have already claimed at least 22 lives.

Figure 1. Cars being swept away by Ketsana's flood waters in Manila's Park 9 Alley, where the Barangay Hall of Loyola Heights is located. Image credit: Manuel Quezon III.

The death toll in the Philippines from Ketsana continues to rise, with 284 dead or missing. The storm flooded the homes of 1.9 million people, leaving 350,000 people homeless. Ketsana brought 16.7 inches of rain in a twelve-hour period to Manila on Saturday, which was the heaviest 1-day rainfall ever recorded in the city. Ketsana is the third deadliest deadliest tropical cyclone to affect the globe so far this year. The deadliest was Typhoon Morakot, which left 654 people dead or missing on Taiwan, when it hit the island as a Category 2 typhoon on August 7. The second deadliest was Cyclone Aila, which made landfall near the India/Bangladesh border on May 25 as a tropical storm with 70 mph winds. Aila killed at least 339 people, 149 in India and 190 in Bangladesh.

The Philippines have three more tropical cyclones to their east to keep an eye on. So far, none of these storms appear to pose a major threat. Tropical Storm Parma is expected to curve to the northwest and miss the islands, Tropical Depression 18 is expected to dissipate, and newly-formed Tropical Depression 20 will probably pass to the north of the islands.

How to help Ketsana victims
Help the UN World Food Programme by making a donation. This program identifies families in specific need of aid. Just $18 provides a family with rice for two weeks. This is the most critical and immediate way you can make an impact.

Donate to the International Red Cross and help them continue to put relief workers on the ground in the Philippines.

Donate via Catholic Relief Services online of the Philippines or call 1-877-HELP-CRS.

Quiet in the Atlantic
None of the computer models are forecasting tropical storm formation in the Atlantic over the next seven days. Wind shear is predicted to be high in the Gulf of Mexico and Caribbean this week, limiting the potential for anything to affect land.

I agree...they were a generation unto themselves; no sacrifice was too much, no privation too demeaning...they were the best of us (yes, and the worst too) but they are an example of what can be done when the need arises and people are willing and that doesn't apply just to Americans

Tsunami warning for New Zealand after 7.9-magnitude ocean quake

WASHINGTON - A tsunami warning was issued for New Zealand and other small Pacific islands after a major 7.9 magnitude quake struck in the ocean off American Samoa, U.S. government agencies said on Tuesday.

The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center, a branch of the U.S. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, issued the warning after the quake hit about 190 kilometres southwest of the remote Pacific island of American Samoa. It struck at a depth of 33 kilometres.

A tsunami watch was in effect for Hawaii, Papua New Guinea and other small Pacific islands.

The agency noted that its warning did not mean a tsunami had necessarily been generated by the quake. The warning was issued because a quake of this magnitude had the power to generate a destructive tsunami, it said.

In 2004, a quake in the Indian Ocean generated a powerful tsunami that killed tens of thousands people in Asia.

FOR ALL AREAS - WHEN NO MAJOR WAVES ARE OBSERVED FOR TWO HOURS
AFTER THE ESTIMATED TIME OF ARRIVAL OR DAMAGING WAVES HAVE NOT
OCCURRED FOR AT LEAST TWO HOURS THEN LOCAL AUTHORITIES CAN ASSUME
THE THREAT IS PASSED. DANGER TO BOATS AND COASTAL STRUCTURES CAN
CONTINUE FOR SEVERAL HOURS DUE TO RAPID CURRENTS. AS LOCAL
CONDITIONS CAN CAUSE A WIDE VARIATION IN TSUNAMI WAVE ACTION THE
ALL CLEAR DETERMINATION MUST BE MADE BY LOCAL AUTHORITIES.

to pat and the other vets on this blog im sorry to continue this, but i offer my apology to yall for this jackass coming on here and saying such garbage.he and others like him is why a lot of the reasons the old bloggers like myself do not blog on here regurally. its sad we have so many people that dont appreciate our veterans. in the days of WWII people backed the troops, made sacrifices, and put out a helping hand in any way they could. in todays society i hear a lot of the WWII vets that served with my father say they could not see this spoiled society now being drafted and thrust into a iwo jima guadacanal okinawa saipan or my fathers tours sicily, normandy thru france into germany. anyway if the old time bloggers were on here they would remember adrian for pretending to be a woman and plagarizing other peoples material.sorry for the rant but when i go to the va cemetary in biloxi and visit my fathers grave and see all the heroic souls buried there i feel proud but ashamed how so many have forgotten god bless all vets and especially those that were considered the greatest generation for i believe it i love you dad and miss you Billy.

NH science teacher: Public can view NASA spacecraft's Mercury flyover online today

By Robert M. Cook
Tuesday, September 29, 2009

DOVER — Students, teachers and anyone with access to a computer and the Internet will be able to witness the flyover of NASA's MESSENGER spacecraft this afternoon as it continues its journey to the planet Mercury.

At 5:55 p.m., people can log onto the blog, http://blogontheuniverse.org/, and see a simulation of MESSENGER as it makes its flyover, according to Sally Jean Jensen of Campton, who works as a science teacher and director of pilot middle school at Waterville Valley Academy.

She said the simulation is based on actual data transmitted from the spacecraft to the mission control center.

Have you read this book by Andrew Mishkin?
Sojourner - An insider's view of the Mars Pathfinder Mission

From Amazon:
Now, with the touch of an expert thriller writer, Sojourner operations team leader Andrew Mishkin tells the inside, human story of the Mars Pathfinder mission's feverish efforts to build a self-guided, offroading robot to explore the surface of the Red Planet. With witty, compelling anecdotes, he describes the clash of temperamental geniuses, the invention of a new work ethic, the turf wars, the chewing-gum solutions to high-tech problems, the controlled chaos behind the strangely beautiful creation of an artificial intelligence-and the exhilaration of inaugurating the next great age of space exploration.

Thanks, sir...as far as veterans go, they should be treated with deference and respect; they should be honored as much as those that gave their all..as Lincoln (wow, could that guy turn a phrase or what?) said "the last full measure of devotion". My dad was infantry in Korea when he was in his late teens and early twenties and I see some of the crap he has to go through even now with the VA and I wonder where the respect went. again, the difference between promises and policy...it's easy to promise everything, it's harder to pay for it. The problem here is that we owe them what was promised and then some...

I know what you mean. I was floored when I read that and floored again on the excuse. Did somebody hijack his ID maybe?

It reads like his writing style.

Is the MJO difficult to predict,or has this just been an anomaly this year. It seems like we been expecting a couple of MJO's this season, but they have not materialized.

Not sure how difficult it is to predict. May be like everything else where long-range is hard to forecast.

It has backed off on MJO coming up as much in the Atlantic in October.

Humm, which one is right. Seems the Velocity potential is that of a rather strong MJO signature?

Check out this crew member's experience. She does space and underwater.

Flight Engineer Nicole P. Stott

Astronaut Nicole Stott will serve as a flight engineer for Expeditions 20 and 21 after launching on STS-128. In April 2006 she was a crew member on the NEEMO 9 mission where she lived and worked with a 6-person crew for 18 days on the Aquarius undersea research habitat.

...it wouldn't be so bad being trapped underwater with her for 18 days...

...just sayin'...

I'm sorry to hear that; I hope he has no lingering effects from his experience. Those of us that did lose people were shaped by our loss, I for one am a pacifist; war is wrong, and the results far out weigh the benefits when all the fighting is over...that is not to say that it isn't unavoidable but I, for one, do not blame the guy that has to fight the war, I always question whether or not every option was considered before the bloodshed begins. Anyone who is "pro-war" should be made to fight in one; these people are typically the ones who never fought
That was a very intelligent way of putting it Flood. My uncle had to learn to write with his left hand(all the muscles in his arm were blown out and his hand was paralyzed closed).

Hurricane 23 has lost all credibility he had on this blog for me. The lame excuse was almost as bad as the jab.

2 bad as I used to like his forecasts.

Below is the latest compliments of the CNN News Wire on Typhoon Katsana

September 29th, 2009
Killer Ketsana slams into Vietnam
Posted: 01:29 PM ET
(CNN) %u2014 After lashing the Philippines with deadly force for several days, Ketsana slammed into Vietnam Tuesday, where it weakened to a tropical storm as it moved inland, forecasters said.

%u201CThe system is expected to completely dissipate over land within the next 12 hours as it continues to track to the west,%u201D the Joint Typhoon Warning Center said in a 11 a.m. ET statement, its final on the storm.

Aid agencies reported that amid flood warnings, some 200,000 people were evacuated from low-lying areas to community centers and schools on higher ground on Vietnam.

Numerous news agencies reported the deaths of more than a dozen people. CNN could not independently verify the reports.

%u201CToday was pretty bad, they say that this is the worst of it,%u201D iReporter Jeff Puchalski, 43, told CNN, speaking from Danang.

%u201CIt was very strong winds,%u201D he said.

Puchalski, who lives in Ho Chi Minh City, was staying at a resort in Danang. His video from outside the resort showed tiles falling from the roof and littering the ground. Although he had intended to stay only for a weekend, he said he was stuck there until the storm passed.

%u201CWe%u2019re also getting very heavy rains,%u201D he said. Hours later, he e-mailed to say the airport would reopen on Wednesday and that he and his family were on the first flight back to Ho Chi Minh City.

The city of Hue in central Vietnam picked up an estimated 13 inches of rainfall in a day, according to CNN Meteorologist Jennifer Delgado.

The global relief agency World Vision said the Vietnamese government had shut down airports, schools and power in the Danang area, three hours from Hue.

Danang is predicted to be in the eye of the storm. It%u2019s very windy and trees have already blown down,%u201D said Le Van Duong, World Vision%u2019s emergency response coordinator in Danang.

%u201CWe have seen the evacuation of 3,000 families from our project areas to safer places, including schools, and we have already distributed noodle packs to 700 families.%u201D

Ketsana left at least 246 people dead as it passed over the Philippines. Another 38 people were still missing, according to the nation%u2019s National Disaster Coordinating Council. Nearly 2 million people were affected by the killer storm and 567,000 people had been evacuated.
