In Celebrattion of Earth Day

In celebration of Earth Day, I urge all of you to go outside and spend one or more minutes in silence, just looking up at the sky or clouds, and absorbing what the atmosphere is doing. Note the direction the wind is blowing, what sounds it is making, and the flight patterns of any birds or insects through the air. Note the type and movement of any clouds, then picture how the air movement over your location is embedded in the large (synoptic) scale motions of the air (is the air moving around a high or low pressure system over you?). Feel your connection to this beautiful and awesomely powerful part of nature. The atmosphere is a truly wondrous creation!

Guess posting in the comments section of the blog wasn't a popular thing back then...

Contemplation is good. Action is better. After meditating let's get rid of the SUVs, drive slower, set the thermostat back, recycle, stop using Chem lawn, and do whatever you can to preserve the earth.

Thank you for founding Weather Underground. I am completely addicted to the photos, and look forward to becoming addicted to the blogs as well. Also hope to get a camera and start to post pictures.

Dr Jeff, I often take a few moments to just "observe" the world around us. I am
very much interested in what makes the weather happen, and the effect it has on us.
My father was a meterologist in the Navy,
and he passed on his interest to me at an eary age. I am now 49, and still am very
fascinated by nature, flying, and the weather..
have agreat day!

Today was both beautiful and emotional. The weather here aptly reflected that.

Contemplation of the enviroment means people too. The recent murder of an activist who is from my town, but I did not know her (Marla Ruzicka), and the serious illness of a family friend who I know very well, have made me more sensitive to the changes in the weather today. Bright and sunny to rainy in the blink of an eye. People can leave us that quick, too. Earth Day is important, because we try a little harder to be better, more compassionate for at least for little while.

What a great blog/photo site to stumble upon on Earth Day. Should be Earth and Sky Day, what's one without the other? As one who would have to confess to being mesmerized by the satellite channel more than once in my life, I would agree we should all go out and look up and around us as you suggest, but the Earth from above is amazingly beautiful, too. Thanks for the reminder to take in all the astounding--and free--beauty around us today and every day.
