Yes, this is it! The first day of summer vacation is today and it is amazing! Blue skies and warm temperatures are ready to greet the students and teachers on the first day of summer vacation, 2014. Yippee!

What to do first? I'm starting with a nice, fresh cup of Starbucks dark roast coffee and a fresh, new weather blog for the summer. Gone will be the pictures of frozen ground, ice floating on the lake and brown landscaping. From here on it will be flowers and sunshine...

.....seem to have formed my vacation "routine." Life is good.

:-)

I agree with you, that time is flying by. C went to Canada for two weeks and I thought I would achieve so much. Several tasks ticked off, but not all, and he is back in 48 hours!! lol

Never mind, I have enjoyed some time on my own, and it has giving me time to sort out the office, without him ensconced!

A pleasant 63F/17C here this morning. Cool weather will be the order of the day for several days now. It has been a coolish summer here after the extremely cold winter. No complaints, many areas of the country are experiencing drought and we are not concerned with that here in the midwest. We have had plenty of rain and the vegetation is a rich green.

July is already slipping by too quickly. I can't believe it is the 9th already. I'm enjoying the days and seem to have formed my vacation "routine." Life is good.

I believe that Sandi could smell the ribs cooking on Friday - I smelled the smoke for hours afterward! Our son joined us and took some home to enjoy later, so we have a few tasty bites left for a light supper again tonight. It was a fun holiday weekend and it is sad to have it over.

Looking forward to the month of July continuing. Not sure of what all I will be doing. I guess that is the fun of it! Need to get back to the walking routine - my goal of 4 times a week isn't holding up in this warm weather. The garden doesn't need too much work anymore, an occasional weed pops up and I make sure it is getting enough water. Many plants are smaller than usual this summer, but the blooms are appearing nicely. Forecast is mild and showery this week.

Happy 4th of July! We are sitting next to the smoker waiting for the sweet and juicy ribs to finish cooking. The cole slaw and watermelon are all made and we can't wait to try these ribs that we have rubbed and smoked. The homemade chicago style BBQ sauce is in a pan on the stove. Delicious!

Hope you are all enjoying this summer day. The weather is perfect.

I'm glad to read that you remembered the watermelon. That is a must for 4th of July, isn't it?

It appears that the horrendous rains in Minnesota have not made there way over to you. An inch of rain is good, but 10 inches is way too much. It looks like the persistent cool and showers have finally left my area -- it's about time.

Happy July 1 - It's Canada Day. I could hear the Canadians partying when I was on Skype last night with my daughter from Montreal. It was a warm, summer night there (like it was here) and the neighbors were out enjoying themselves. We had a big summer storm blow through later in the evening with an inch of needed rain. Today will be sunny and less humid.

Steve returns tonight for an extended holiday weekend. Hopefully it will be warm enough to swim and hang out by the pool. BBQ is a must - bought a slab of pork ribs yesterday to rub and grill and sauce. Also, a whole watermelon to slice. Hopefully our son will join us sometime. They both enjoy setting off a few fireworks on the 4th.

White Rabbits to all and have a great week!

Wishing you a very happy Month of July :)

White Vinegar is supposed to keep them away... well, our little brown ants, anyway!

Summer arrived with hazy, hot and humid conditions over the weekend. A local weather person posted a humorous picture (at least it is humerous now) of the 3+ feet of snow we had on the ground just a few months ago. Nobody dares to mention "being too hot" aloud around here!

We've also had a steady stream of insect arrivals this spring. Right now it is the black "picnic style" ants parading their way through the house. They aren't getting into the cupboards or food, they just walk past on the floors, counters, walls, anywhere they like. Any natural remedies for them? I just either vacuum or pick them up one by one. One just passed by me on my desk!

Oh, we used to sing that ditty when we were kids,
"Rain, rain go away...Come again another day"... but we used to sing, "Rain, rain go away...Come on mother's washing day"! Now I have to do the laundry myself... I don't want anyone to wish the rain on me! lol

Hope it stops soon, and summer, proper, arrives before September, and school again!

It's been a long time since I came by, even to lurk. I hope you have a great summer vacation after that epicly horrible winter you had.

I the photo of those wooden stairs going down to the beach. I would hate the stairs, but love the photo!

My zinnias are not much better. Actually probably about the same. They came up quickly but then not as much progress as I expected since then. But they will eventually get there. We have had a nice rose display several weeks ago now. I only have a few rose bushes remaining, so not overwhelming at best.

Rain is back this week for us, after some really nice weather. The rest of the week is cooler and wetter, although I wonder how wet it actually will be. Summer is our dry season and it can threaten and not produce much - or sometimes it can really pour. We have a BBQ in a park coming this Saturday with invited guests - a good-bye party for our son-in-law, who is leaving for the Air Force in a few days. He will do a month of military training and then ship directly to medical school and begin that in early August. My daughter will stay back until later August to finish up a full year of nursing work and organize their move. So changes are coming, again, real soon. I sure hate to see them go.

"Rain, rain go away...Come again another day" keeps running through my mind today. Each time I step outside I am greeted by another small shower. It is like living in a rainforest lately. The grass is green, but my flowers are suffering from the constant dampness. I guess nature will take its course this year.

Zinnias are only about 2 inches high and nothing else is really blooming right now. Roses are kind of showing a few small blossoms. Hopefully we can dry out and catch up on summer!

Congratulations to your parents! Not an easy accomplishment! And it was so nice you could attend and make it special for them.

I may be seeing a friend later this week that I last saw about 11 years ago and seldom correspond with either, but we go back to jr high. She is coming to town for a work conference and so a get-together may happen. It is nice that you do a lot better with your long-time friends! I won't say "old friends".

Sounds like a pleasant summer ahead and the activities you have in mind sound so refreshing and sing of "summer"! Did you plant zinnias this year? They would add just the color you need for your relaxation. I have some coming up - quite a way to go before the color pops out on them.

Have a great "summer time" in the coming weeks!

I wrote a whole update last week and then forgot to post it before I left for the weekend celebrations. Now the festivities are over and I am back for the "dog days" of summer. My parents enjoyed their 60th anniversary celebration with my brother and I. Our sisters couldn't attend, but it was still a lovely evening. I spent the weeekend with them and also had an opportunity on Friday to see my elementary school friends. We meet for lunch each summer to catch up. Friends since age 5 with a lot of history through the years as we raised our children and watched each other and our parents grow older. Saturday was my neices baby shower. It was an afternoon of watching more years fly by as I recalled her as a baby herself. My 2 year old daughter and I went to the hospital to visit her when she was born and I was about to give birth to my son.

Now, I'm back at home and planning to stay here. time to walk to the beach, swim in our pool and enjoy the luxury of summer vacation. Clear the mind for 9 weeks before school begins in the fall!

Hi Jane
I am glad you are enjoying your holiday and visiting your parents for their 60th wedding anniversary, wow, that's a great party to celebrate.
The time will go quickly so enjoy it while you can. I'm sure there's still plenty of things you should be able to do. Are you going to get your swimming pool filled ready to have a swim?

I remember when I had school holidays. We only got six weeks in the summer, and the first two weeks were always spent catching up with the house work that I'd let slip as the term went on. The next two weeks I enjoyed as a holiday, either going away or not doing much around the house, and the final two weeks were spent in preparation for the new term.

Enjoy it whilst you can, and the sunshine, we have no sun today!

So, now it is the second week of vacation for me already! Summertime flies by faster than winter. Visited my parents last week and had a great time with them. I'm returning to spend 3-4 nights again this week to attend a baby shower for my niece and a dinner party celebrating my parents 60th wedding anniversary. Lots of reasons to celebrate! Weather is fabulous - warm and sunny days and cool nights for sleeping. Humidity ready to set in later this week - but it is welcome.
