It's A Beautiful Day In Marvinville

Note about Network Outages and their Effect on Data Collection

By: ItsABeautifulDay, 7:17 AM GMT on August 26, 2013

Here at the Marvinville Weather Thingy Research Institute we occasionally experience Internet service outages that affect the communications between the weather thingy and Weather Underground. These outages typically occur in the early morning hours and are presumed to result from maintenance activities of our Internet service provider, Time Warner Cable.

You can identify these outages by the resulting gaps in data in the tabular data on the weather station's weather history page. For example, station KCASANDI079's August 22, 2013 weather history page lacks data for the period between the 03:46 and 05:27 entries. This gap is consistent with our Internet service provider's history of service outages.

The graphs for many data items will show a straight line between the last reading taken and the first reading following the resumption of data transmission. This is phantom data...it does not reflect any measurements taken by the sensors. Other graphs like wind gusts and wind direction properly show gaps when data is missing.

Update 4 on Weather Station Software - Mission Accomplished

By: ItsABeautifulDay, 6:45 AM GMT on August 19, 2013

The Weather Thingy is back online, coming to you via Weewx. Weewx is now the official software of the Marvinville Weather Thingy Research Institute.

Update 3 on Weather Station Software - It's Working

By: ItsABeautifulDay, 5:09 AM GMT on August 19, 2013

The weewx software has begun sending new data to the KCASANDI179 weather station page. We have also installed the experimental rapidfire.py python module that provides Weather Underground "rapid fire" update capabilities to weewx.

So far the software seems stable and is able to update the personal weather station data without any apparent issues. I will give the software some additional time for testing, and if no issues surface I will configure the software as a startup service and push it to production status.

Update 2 on Weather Station Software - Software Installed

By: ItsABeautifulDay, 2:28 AM GMT on August 19, 2013

The weewx sofware has been installed and configured. It is currently populating its MySQL database with historical data. After the database is fully populated I expect that the software will begin sending new data to Weather Underground to update the personal weather station page. We will continue to post updates to this blog as testing progresses.

Update on Weather Station Software - Hardware Acquired

By: ItsABeautifulDay, 8:17 AM GMT on August 18, 2013

The Marvinville Weather Thingy Research Institute has acquired a Raspberry Pi board for evaluation as an alternate compute host for the weather station software.

The Raspberry Pi is a credit-card sized computer that plugs into a TV or monitor with an HDMI input and a USB keyboard/mouse. It has been configured to run Raspbian, a Linux distribution based on Debian and optimized for the Raspberry Pi.

In addition, the Weewx weather station software is being evaluated as a potential replacement for the current Weatherlink/Wunderground software running on Windows. Weewx is free, open source software written in Python.

The engineering team here at the research institute have made good progress building the new system. The sofware is currently being configured and the expectation is that we will begin feeding data to the new system in a day or two. We will post updates to this blog as testing progresses.
