Hurricane Arthur

By: IBYC , 2:59 AM GMT on July 04, 2014

As I write this on Thursday afternoon, the consensus among meteorologists is that come Saturday afternoon Arthur will have veered east of MA, with perhaps only the Cape getting hurricany in any way. As boaters, this should absolutely not lull us into a sense of security. For one thing will be certain regardless of what this storm ends up doing: Storm Surge. We all know that storm surge causes coastal flooding, however, especially IBYC boating members whose boats are in a sound that acts like a natural funnel should remember that storm surges exponentially increase the effects of the incoming AND outgoing tides. This means extremely rapid current not only while trying to navigate your boat, but on your boat and mooring gear while it is moored as well.

Storm surges are expected to be 2-4 ft with winds of 80 mph when Arthur is off our coast. Please stay tuned in to Ipswich Bay Yacht Club weather on for updates, alerts, and possible launch service interruptions.

Happy boating!!
