What is a model snowstorm? A model snowstorm for my area is one that I've written about in my first blog here. It starts in the Pacific and comes ashore in the Pacific Northwest. It slides southeastward across the great plains into the gulf states. The low pressure gathers strength and moisture from the Gulf of Mexico and starts slowly moving east towards the southeast coast. The snows start well ahead of the low pressure system's arrival. They increase in intensity as the low slowly climbs up the eastern seaboard. All the while the pressure is dropping off the coast of cape hatteras where massive intensification continues but now explosively. The low stalls as a giant ridge of high pressure sits in the North Atlantic, centered near Greenland. As the snows fall for up to 72 hours in some areas, a blanket of up to 4 feet of snow shuts down the East Coast from Birmingham to the Canadian Maritimes.
Now the Model Snowstorm I'm referring to is the one which has just appeared 10 days out on the GFS MODEL. It sits off of the coast dumping 20 inches of Snow on the DC area on Tuesday, March 7. What is a sick man, like myself, to believe? I thought I was almost at peace with my snow demon but now this pops up. I was ready to accept Spring but now it can stay in the south for another month or so. I've got a reason, other than my children, to be sleep deprived again! On Dasher, on Dancer, on HEAVYSNOW...
As I type this a local weatherguy is suggesting winter is over and we will get in a spring like pattern soon. More confirmation of what I have just typed. That's why he's on on Sunday nights.
BRING IT ON! I don't care if it melts two days later.
