I just need enough snow to build a darn igloo is that asking too much?

The stinkin' snow drought in my neck of the woods rolls on unabated. 1 3 inch snow doesn't cut it, it's a start, but come on now!

The igloo was 2 years ago and was made from 5 inches of sleet.

Palmyra's got my sleet pipe!

Quite comfy actually, not a bad first effort. Sleeps 2 adults of minimal girth(the door is narrow).

Good morning Heavy,
I'm sure you're having a blast with the 2 feet on the ground at your place...this is probably the best storm you've ever seen!!

Three years ago today in Denver, we were getting clobbered by a 20"+ blizzard that closed the airport for two days just as the Christmas travel rush was getting started. Then another blizzard hit a week later. Some people we know had to cancel their holiday trips. That storm kicked off a 2-month period of continuous snow cover in Denver. I measured 84" at our house in the winter of 2006-07. This year's not too bad so far...I'm at 32" for the season to date. Looks like we may have a pretty good snow out here on Wednesday...that will be a birthday present for me!! Have fun and I hope your kids get a couple of days off from school to enjoy it :)

When we get two feet of snow, school is closed a day, and even two if the plowing isn't done at the right times. Power outages are unusual with snow here, unless we get 12 to 15 inches of wet heavy snow or strong wind. The power grid is made extra tough up here, with trees carefuly cut and trimed along power lines, and extra reinforced cables. Heavy wet snow is somewhat rare due to plenty of dry polar air up here, and even though winds can get strong, with so many trees around, the winds tend to weaken dramaticaly away from the lake.

It seems snow is just kinda left of the roads for a few days up here, and nobody cares.lol

P.S. to my comment #144. Sorry I wasn't taking into account the fact that 2 feet of snow in the Mid-Atlantic states will cripple transportation, cause school closings, power outages, state of emergency declared, etc., but it will be melted within a week so you can't really make an igloo that's gonna' last until March. 2 feet of snow up here on a Saturday wouldn't even close schools the next Monday LOL. It would be cleaned up within 36 hours...

Quoting BANGORWALKER:
LOL Upweather! My pile just keeps getting bigger and bigger and the walls keep getting thicker so that they are at LEAST 40 inches thick and highly compacted by the time March rolls around, so it's the last thing to melt!!!

Build the igloo, then throw more snow on top and flatten it. Then you have a flat base for another igloo on top! ROFLMAO!

You can also use the pile method and get the pile really tall and narrow, and carve a spiral around it, and now you have a snow tree. Throw on some lights, and there you go! Thats what we did this year. I should get some pics tomorrow.

Congrats on the snow!

We have found a new method for building igloos without blocks.

#1 First build a large pile of snow, depending on how big you want the fort. This is best done using a snowblower because it breaks up the snow and throws it into the pile really hard which compresses it. Snowblowers give you a nice solid pile.

#2 We are going to be carving out a room, so decide where you want your windows, doors, etc. Decide wether or not you plan on walking or sitting on top of the the igloo.

#3 Carve the igloo how you want it to look. Be sure that the walls are at least 10 inches thick, but even thicker would be better. At least 15 inches if the snow is sticky and you want the roof to support someone on top, or 20+ inches thick if the snow is fine. (Thickness varies with snow texture)

Congrats! You now have built a igloo!

Santa came early for you I see? Enjoy! Here's wishing you and family a Happy Holiday Season. As the water doggy said, you SO deserve this HEAVY fun. As for me, I'll take the 2 or 3 inches of the back side of this system sometime tomorrow, but the ground has been white up here for 2 weeks now so I can't complain...

Well, phooey. Although I love the idea of the Heavy family out with spray bottles on the dry snow, I can see the fleeting nature of snow in March. I'm with you. Bring on Spring! Break out the shorts!

I stopped by to see the snow pictures, but there not here yet. :-(
Now am I going to have wait for the snow pictures as long as I waited for Baby Snows pictures, Huh!?

That could be a bad thing for your blog. Hehe

I wished as hard as I could. But between wishing for your snow and rain for us I think Mother Nature gave up listening to my whinning.

I've temporarily got my own snow plapman! 70's forecast for this weekend. I'll come get yours once I figure out where to put it with the warm weather. I might have to wait until next winter.

MaryEsther and huri!!! I'll admit that I got a decent dose of snow but it was just too dry for igloo making, and too time consuming knowing that it would only last a few days this time.

Sledding and general horseplay was the order of the two snowplay days we got, okay yesterday would have been good too. We do have some pics that I'll post eventually. It was a bittersweet storm. Not as much snow as I'd hoped and the cruel knowledge that March snow is fleeting here and would soon be a memory until who knows when. Next Winter? Maybe, maybe not.

Thanks for the visits mush and michael. Winter made one last brief push. It was beautiful but far too brief.

Boo hoo.

Bring on Spring and shorts weather.
