Wisconsin Weather Update

Wisconsin Weather Update for July 29, 2013.

By: HaleStorm, 12:40 PM GMT on July 29, 2013

Decreasing clouds and warmer today. Storms return tomorrow night.
After our record-setting cold high temperatures this weekend, we’re going to get back to summer starting today. These early-morning clouds should give way to sunshine later this morning thanks to high pressure moving into the region. An accompanying wind shift from northwest to southwest and an exit of this bubble of cold air to our northeast means warmer air is finally going to return to the state with highs in the 70s generally expected this week. Look for our next chance of storms tomorrow night and Wednesday morning as a new disturbance approaches.

Weather Map of the Day
This 850mb temperature map from yesterday evening shows that bubble of cold air from the weekend centralized in Michigan, moving slowly to the northeast, and warmer air finally beginning to advect into Wisconsin from the west. Note that later this morning, this link will show data from 6am today instead of 6pm yesterday.

Wisconsin Weather Update for July 22, 2013.

By: HaleStorm, 12:29 PM GMT on July 22, 2013

Warmer today with scattered storms this afternoon and evening. Clearing and cooler tomorrow.
A cold front stretching from a low pressure system just north of Minnesota is going to move eastward today, bringing the threat of strong thunderstorms to Wisconsin late this afternoon and this evening. Ahead of the front we’ll see warm southerly winds bringing temps back into the 80s and somewhat humid dew points in the 60s. Behind the front we’ll see a clearing sky with cooler temperatures tomorrow.

Weather Map of the Day

This isn’t as much a scientific map, but it’s today’s Convective Outlook provided by the Storm Prediction Center. I throw this link in my forecasts a lot during the summer, but this is a good and easy to read map showing where severe weather potential is likely today. The shade of green shows where general thunderstorms are possible, and the area of yellow stretching across much of Wisconsin indicates a slight risk of severe weather. Hover over the tornado/wind/hail buttons to show the individual threat for each of these. If you want to get geeky, there’s plenty of explanatory text below the map. The SPC provides Convective Outlooks for each day in the next week, but today is the only day this week with any sort of threat for Wisconsin.

Wisconsin Weather Update for July 15, 2013.

By: HaleStorm, 12:32 PM GMT on July 15, 2013

Warm and humid. Isolated thunderstorms later today.
High pressure off to our east should continue to keep us mostly dry with a sun/cloud mix today. Southerly winds behind this area of high pressure will bring northward even more heat and humidity, and that always has the chance to initiate some atmospheric convection and thunderstorm development, but most of us should remain dry today. Temps will continue to get close to 90 degrees for the next few days, and with dew points in the upper 60s to lower 70s expected, it will feel rather uncomfortable outside. Humidity relief is not expected until this weekend.
http://www.hpc.ncep.noaa.gov/sfc/ussatsfc.gif

Weather Map of the Day
This 4-panel relative humidity/lifting potential map shows that the early sunshine we’re getting now (purple, not-hashed, upper-left panel) is going to get clouded over later today (blue colors, upper-right panel), and the hashed areas indicate areas where thunderstorm development is possible. Generally your best chance of thunderstorm development occurs both where the air is moist (blues) and where there is convective instability (hashed areas). The deeper the blues and hashed areas, the more intense the clouds/storms could be.

Wisconsin Weather Update for July 8, 2013.

By: HaleStorm, 12:42 PM GMT on July 08, 2013

Thunderstorms early this morning. More storms tomorrow. Warm and humid through tomorrow, then dry and cooler.
A round of thunderstorms is waking most of us ahead of our alarm clocks this morning. Once these pass, we should be dry for the rest of the day, other than an isolated storm that may develop later this afternoon. More storms are expected tomorrow as a cold front passes through, and some of these storms could be severe (see link). Very warm and humid weather continue just through tomorrow. Wednesday through Sunday look a little cooler and definitely less humid with lots of sunshine for everyone to enjoy. Unless you’re working indoors, in which case, why not leave the building for lunch one of these days?

Weather Map of the Day

This map is pretty easy for everyone to figure out – it’s your standard NEXRAD radar map showing the line of storms moving through east-central Wisconsin this morning. It’s got customizable options including showing individual storm track detail, lightning strike display, one-click access to other radar sites in the Midwest, and a variety of other radar maps if you’re interested. I also look at the Radial Velocity maps as those can be interpreted to indicate rotation within a thunderstorm, including spotting early signs of tornado formation.
