Wisconsin Weather Update

Wisconsin Weather Update for March 30, 2012.
Posted by: HaleStorm, 12:40 PM GMT on March 30, 2012 +0
Rain and cold this morning. Warmer this weekend.

An area of low pressure is moving across Illinois this morning, and has been spreading its precipitation across Wisconsin over the last few hours. This rain will continue through this morning, but should start diminishing by around lunchtime or this afternoon. Temperatures aren’t too far away from the freezing level, so I wouldn’t be shocked if we saw a few snowflakes mix in with the rain, but it won’t add up to anything.
http://www.hpc.ncep.noaa.gov/sfc/ussatsfc.gif

Did you know that yesterday some of us we were actually BELOW normal? Green Bay has a normal high of 46 and the high temperature was only 44 yesterday, and Milwaukee was five degrees below normal with a high of only 43. Madison had better luck yesterday as their high temperatures made it up to the mid- 50s. We’ve got another cold day ahead of us today, but by Sunday we should be back in the 60s or maybe even the 70s! But on Sunday it’ll be April so your outdoor temperature expectations can be raised a little more legitimately.

Wisconsin Weather Update for March 26, 2012.

Cooler with thundershowers possible later today and tonight.
Normal high temperatures for a day? Oh no! But you read that right. For one day and one day only, our high temperatures are actually going to be about where they should be for this time of the year. A hard freeze or frost was experienced by most of us this morning and high temperatures only in the 40s are expected. But fear not, this crisis won’t last long, as temperatures get mild again starting tomorrow.
http://www.aos.wisc.edu/weatherdata/sfc/sfc_mw_ma p.gif

A storm system currently in the Rocky Mountains is developing some scattered showers and thunderstorms ahead of it, and this precip is expected to arrive in Wisconsin later today, starting in southwestern Wisconsin. So look for clouds to increase if they haven’t already, and keep your umbrella handy if you’re out and about later this afternoon, this evening, and for your morning commute to work tomorrow.

Rain today, sunshine and clouds this weekend. Cooler but still very mild.
This unprecedented streak of over a week of high temperatures close to forty (40) degrees above normal ended yesterday, when we were ONLY thirty (30) degrees above normal. I know, terrible, right? Well, prepare to gasp, because we may only be twenty (20) degrees above normal this weekend, then only ten (10) degrees above normal for much of next week.
http://www.crh.noaa.gov/news/display_cmsstory.php ?wfo=mkx&storyid=80604&source=0

The strong, lingering areas of low pressure to our west and high pressure to our east that brought us that record-setting warmth are finally starting to move off, and cooler air is slowly returning to the Great Lakes region. I didn’t see any arctic plunges of nasty cold in the forecast, but cooler air will start returning and will be more noticeable next week when our highs may only be in the 50s. But hey, that’s still above our normal high of the mid- 40s, so we should still be happy about it. Really. So while the A/C and the kids’ sprinkler in the backyard got a little bit of action already, we will probably ignore both again for a while. As we should. It’s March, after all.

Today’s Forecast Grade: B
Short-Term Forecast Confidence: Medium

Wisconsin Forecast:
Today’s Conditions: Cloudy with scattered showers. Maybe a thunderstorm. Chance of rain near 100%.
Today’s High Temps: Cooler than yesterday but still very mild, high of 63 east-central, mid- to upper 60s south.
Today’s Winds: Just a little breezy from the east.

Raw Model Data: (combined numerical output range from three different NOAA weather models)
Appleton: Highs 64-68.
Madison: Highs 70-75.
Milwaukee: Highs 66-68.

Tonight: Cloudy with lingering showers gradually ending. Lows in the low to mid- 50s.

Tomorrow’s Conditions: Mostly cloudy.
Tomorrow’s Temps: Highs in the mid- 60s east-central, upper 60s south. Lows tomorrow night near 50.
Tomorrow’s Winds: Light from the northeast.

Sunday: Partly cloudy and slightly cooler. Highs near 60 east-central, mid- 60s south.

Next Week’s Outlook:
Conditions: Windy with showers on Tuesday, then more rain on Friday. Maybe.
High Temperatures: Generally in the 55-60 range, although Wednesday could spike well into the 60s. Still well above normal.

Warmest Winter Day Ever!

Temperatures topped off near 80 degrees for the fifth day in a row yesterday, and some areas recorded the warmest single day of winter in our recorded history! It wasn’t that long ago when we were still experiencing winter – just a couple of weeks ago on March 9th our high was 37 degrees and a few days before that, my kids were sledding at the park.
http://www.crh.noaa.gov/news/display_cmsstory.php ?wfo=mkx&storyid=80604&source=0

This weekend I went back and forth trying to decide whether or not to put away the winter items and get out our spring/summer things. After looking at the 10-day forecast maps, our winter clothes are now in the closet, the outdoor grill was out of the garage and cooking all sorts of yummy food, and the kids were throwing water balloons and playing with the sprinkler!

This ridiculously-warm stretch of weather is expected to last through Wednesday with highs generally in the mid- 70s expected. We may even see a few thunderstorms today! Temperatures do look to cool off a bit for the second half of the week, but should still be in the 60s to near 70, making this go from ridiculous to just very warm. Consider that our normal high temperature for this date is 41 and we should all be especially appreciative! 41 people! Seriously!

Madison: Highs 73-78.
Milwaukee: Highs 71-72.

Tonight: Scattered thunderstorms in the evening, then variably cloudy overnight. Lows near 60.

Tomorrow’s Conditions: Sunshine and clouds. Still awesome.
Tomorrow’s Temps: Highs in the mid- 70s.
Tomorrow’s Winds: Breezy from the south.

Extended Outlook:
Conditions: Maybe a rain shower on Wednesday and/or Thursday, with a better chance of rain on Friday. Should be dry this weekend, unless some rain showers linger into Saturday morning.
High Temperatures: Mid- 70s on Wednesday, then temperatures drop just a bit, into the 60s to near 70 for Thursday through Sunday. Still awesome when our average high temperature for this date is 41!

Still cold today, but mild starting tomorrow.

So did you shovel your driveway after our ~5” snowstorm on Friday, or did you get lazy and decide to wait until it all melts on Tuesday? For me it was an excuse to get out my snowblower for just the second time this season and take the kids sledding perhaps for the last time this winter. But if you enjoy the snowy view, you should take a picture of it, as the snow goes away tomorrow. An upcoming storm system will bring strong southerly winds to the area starting this evening, and while the precip will likely stay in Canada this time around, we will just get the benefits of the warm front with warmer temperatures beginning tomorrow. Temps may approach 50 tomorrow, and may be in the 50s Wednesday (along with some rain showers), before cooling a bit back into the 40s for the rest of the week.
