Wisconsin Weather Update

Wisconsin Weather Update for December 19, 2011.

By: HaleStorm, 2:08 PM GMT on December 19, 2011

If global warming means warm winter temperatures and little snow, I just might be okay with that.
I think the mild late-Autumn weather is more the fault of our upper-air weather patterns, which have thus far kept us a little warmer than usual, and that big rain we had a few days ago would have been the typical gigantic blanket of snow had it been just a few degrees colder. And big snows aren’t nonexistent either, as much of the south-central U.S. is getting ready for a blizzard later today! That weather pattern will shift and we’ll get our fair share of snow before you know it.
http://www.cnn.com/2011/12/19/travel/winter-storm /index.html?iref=NS1

As for Wisconsin’s week-before-Christmas, it’s going to be more of the same. There are two systems to keep a somewhat watchful eye on: a pan-handle hook that’s going to dump a lot of snow upon the south-central U.S. today, then sweep northeast tomorrow to bother much of the Great Lakes region. We may get brushed by the far western edge of the storm tomorrow afternoon and evening, so a light mix of precip could make travel rather interesting. Another weak disturbance could generate some light snow Friday night, but that looks really weak and was barely even worth mentioning. And that’s it. Enjoy your dry roads as you travel around next weekend!

Wisconsin Weather Update for December 16, 2011.

By: HaleStorm, 1:54 PM GMT on December 16, 2011

If we’re going to have a white Christmas, we are running out of days!
Instead of cold weather and snow showers, we have brown grass and record-setting high temperatures (Madison’s high of 52 yesterday broke the day’s record set in 1998 and 1957). The La Nina climate forecast for a colder than normal winter and a snowier-than-normal winter so far is a complete bust, but then again, winter doesn’t even begin for another week! Plus with the last few winters being very snowy, I know a lot of you don’t mind the warmer weather pattern.

As for snow chances before Christmas, we may have some light snow or flurries tomorrow, more light snow possible on Tuesday, then flurries on Thursday. At this point nothing looks like it’s going to add up to a whole lot, so driving around during the holidays may be a little less hectic without the threat of a blizzard getting in the way.

Today’s Forecast Grade: B
Short-Term Forecast Confidence: Medium

Wisconsin Forecast:
Today’s Conditions: Mostly cloudy in east-central Wisconsin. A bit more sunshine the further south you live.
Today’s High Temps: Colder than yesterday, high of about 31 east-central, low to mid- 30s south.
Today’s Winds: Light from the northwest.

Raw Model Data: (combined numerical output range from three different NOAA weather models)
Appleton: Highs 28-30.
Madison: High of 31.
Milwaukee: Highs 33-34.
http://www.nws.noaa.gov/cgi-bin/mos/getall.pl?sta =KATW&sta=KMSN&sta=KMKE

Tonight: Clouds. Maybe some flurries overnight. Lows in the upper teens.

Tomorrow’s Conditions: Clouds with light snow showers or flurries early in the day. Clearing sky late. Chance of measurable snow 50%, but it’ll probably be less than an inch, so you can keep your sleds in the garage.
Tomorrow’s Temps: Highs in the low to mid- 30s. Lows tomorrow night near 20.
Tomorrow’s Winds: A little breezy from the southwest.

Sunday: Partly cloudy, breezy and a little warmer. Highs in the mid- to upper 30s.

Next Week’s Outlook:
Conditions: That Monday snowstorm I had hinted about last Monday now looks like it’s just barely going to clip southeastern Wisconsin, and on Tuesday. Maybe some flurries on Thursday. Another storm moves across the US on Friday but as of now it’s looking like a nor’easter and not a Great Lakes’er.
High Temperatures: Highs generally in the 30s, although we may drop back into the 20s for highs by next Friday.
Extended Forecast Confidence: Medium

Wisconsin Weather Update for December 12, 2011.

By: HaleStorm, 1:30 PM GMT on December 12, 2011

Freezing drizzle? Oh my!
Sounds threatening, eh? Well, don’t give that sarcasm to all of the drivers who slid into a ditch on the roads this morning! Early morning roads both today and tomorrow could be a bit on the treacherous side, with a couple days of clouds, light rain and drizzle (freezing in the early morning before melting) expected before a stronger rain moves through on Wednesday.
http://www.wunderground.com/radar/radblast.asp?ID =GRB

While we may see a little bit of snow Wednesday night and some flurries on Thursday, this doesn’t look to be the storm that will give us a white Christmas.
http://weather.unisys.com/gfs/gfs.php?inv=0&plot= pres®ion=us&t=4p2

The next significant storm of interest doesn’t look to move through until next Monday. We’re running out of storms if we want that white Christmas, so maybe this next one will deliver the snow?

Wisconsin Weather Update for December 9, 2011.

By: HaleStorm, 2:58 PM GMT on December 09, 2011

Are you dreaming of a brown Christmas?
Because at this pace, that’s what you might be getting! While northern Wisconsin already has a decent snow base, central and southern Wisconsin are still looking for that first storm that keeps the grass hidden until March (or April!) A large area of high pressure will keep the clouds away through most of the weekend, but a jet stream trough is bringing colder air into the Great Lakes region through tomorrow.
http://www.crh.noaa.gov/news/display_cmsstory.php ?wfo=mkx&storyid=76134&source=0

Our next chance at any significant precipitation looks to be next week Wednesday night and Thursday. As of now it’s looking like a panhandle-hook, rain/snow mix event, but it’s still too early to make any (accurate) predictions on that one. However, my weather blog answers to nobody besides myself, so here goes. A light rain/snow mix Wednesday night turns to all rain during the day on Thursday, then changes back to snow Thursday evening before ending that night. Expect 2-3” of snow before it tapers off late Thursday. Yeah you can go ahead and laminate that one. 

Wisconsin Weather Update for December 5, 2011.

By: HaleStorm, 1:15 PM GMT on December 05, 2011

Light mix today, then dry and cold.

A weak disturbance in the (coriolis) force has generated a dusting of snow across much of Wisconsin this morning, and it has even mixed with light freeing drizzle in many locations. While you won’t need to get out your boots, shovel and sled, it could make roads a little slippery this morning. It’s a little weird to see snow sticking on the driveway, but not on the grass, since it’s usually the other way around!

After today, things get dry and cold for a while thanks to two separate areas of high pressure which are expected to float across the United States this week. Cold arctic air may keep us from reaching 30 starting tomorrow, and we may have a hard time getting much past 20 by Friday. Northern Wisconsin already has a nice snow base, but central and southern Wisconsin are likely to get to at least the middle of December without any major snowstorms. How do you like that?

Wisconsin Weather Update for December 2, 2011.

By: HaleStorm, 1:54 PM GMT on December 02, 2011

Sun today, mix of precip tomorrow, much colder next week.

I could tell you all about how yesterday’s storm was a close call, about how it looked like it was snowing hard outside at times, yet barely anything stuck to the grass. I could tell you all about high pressure and southerly winds that will give Wisconsinites a pretty nice early December day today. But you don’t care, really. You heard about this storm coming tomorrow and you want to know if it’s going to ruin your travelling plans. And the answer is, well, probably not.

Of course it depends on where you live and when you’re heading out, but a panhandle-hook-type storm will arrive early tomorrow morning and continue through early Sunday. The precip will probably start out as a light mix, then turn to all rain during the day. It will probably change back over to a mix or all snow Saturday night, and we may see a couple inches of snow before it leaves Sunday morning. Exact timing, duration, and amount of snow is not guaranteed, not FDIC insured, and may go up or down in value.

Tomorrow’s Conditions: Clouds with a light mix changing to all rain during the day. Rain may change back to snow Saturday night, with some accumulation possible depending on when it changes back to snow in your backyard. Chance of precip near 100%.
Tomorrow’s Temps: Highs near 40 east-central and south-central, in the low to mid- 40s southeast. Lows tomorrow night near 30.
Tomorrow’s Winds: Somewhat breezy from the south.
