Wisconsin Weather Update for November 28, 2011.

Weather is boring.
But this time of the year, I think many of us gladly accept boring weather compared to the alternative. A nearly-stationary area of high pressure located in southwestern Iowa this morning should keep the dry weather pattern around for a while. There is a big storm system out to our southeast that’s very slowly moving north. However, it’s currently projected to just barely miss Wisconsin, perhaps getting as close as Lake Michigan. Otherwise, besides a few light snow showers or flurries Thursday night and an Alberta Clipper next Sunday, conditions should stay dry with seasonable high temps in the 30s to near 40.

Extended Outlook:
Conditions: Maybe some light snow showers or flurries Thursday night. Otherwise, the next storm system doesn’t look to arrive until Sunday night, and with that Alberta Clipper still a week away, who knows what will happen with the projections over the next week. So enjoy the boring.
High Temperatures: Near 40 Wednesday and Thursday, dropping through the 30s next weekend, and the start of next week may not even hit 30. Sorry.

So let’s quick confirm that Thanksgiving weekend forecast, okay?
Sounds good. Generally you’re going to like what you read. We’ll have to deal with clouds and cool temperatures today and tomorrow and some scattered rain showers southeast tomorrow, but the days around Thanksgiving are looking quite nice. Mild air is going to flow into the Midwest behind an area of high pressure, which could push many of us above 50 degrees both on Thanksgiving and Black Friday.

Our next storm system post-Thanksgiving rolls through late in the day on Black Friday, dampening the lightened wallets and purses of shoppers everywhere in the Midwest. The rain should turn to just clouds and occasional drizzle on Saturday and Sunday, although it could mix with some light snow Saturday night and Sunday as colder air returns behind the storm system.

Will weather affect my Thanksgiving travel plans?
Probably not, assuming your plan is to stick around the Midwest next week. A warm front is located in northern Wisconsin this morning, associated with an area of low pressure in the Dakotas. This means warm and breezy conditions can be expected today, but most of the clouds should remain just to our north. So yay for us. The slightly mild air continues tomorrow as a weak cold front moves through, developing a few scattered rain showers before exiting our region early tomorrow evening. Sunday looks colder behind the cold front, but besides a sprinkle or two that night, it should be dry. Next week’s weather maps are showing a lot of high pressure, indicating a dry and seasonable weather pattern through Thanksgiving. If your kids are asking when the snow will return again, don’t worry, it will be back soon enough.

Wisconsin Weather Update for November 11, 2011.

Good 11/11/11 morning!

When’s it going to snow again?
It might not be for a while! Some sunshine today will be followed by more sunshine tomorrow. An “Alberta Clipper” storm system moves through on Sunday, but as of now it seems temperatures will be warm enough to have the precipitation fall as rain instead of snow. Another storm system moves through Monday night, but as of now that system is expected to miss us to the north, and no other significant weather systems are expected for the remainder of our next work week. The snow that fell in our backyard Wednesday is pretty much gone already, but if you’re already missing it, don’t worry. With winter still on its way and a La Nina pattern expected, we should be seeing many more flakes soon enough.

Sunshine Today. Rain Tomorrow.
Looking at the current surface weather map below, there’s two storm systems that are going to affect our weather over the next three days. One storm system to our north in western Ontario, Canada, is strong but all we’re going to get around here is some breezy conditions at times. The storm system to watch is developing to our southwest, near Oklahoma this morning. This “panhandle-hook” is going to shoot north courtesy of the upper-air jet stream and deliver a soaking rain starting tonight and lasting through probably mid-day on Wednesday. The 850mb temperature advection and 540 thickness lines are showing this precip staying as mostly rain throughout, although it could briefly change over to a mix or a few snowflakes before ending Wednesday. Seems that you may not need that snow blower for at least another week!

Snow Next Wednesday?
So judging by the comments that showed up on Facebook underneath Monday’s weather update, you guys are NOT just a little jealous of other locations that get snow before we do. Hmph. Well, by the middle of next week, we may be able to put that to the test. Sunshine and warmer temperatures will greet us today and tomorrow before a weak storm system develops a line of showers that’ll probably push through Wisconsin on Sunday.

Of greater interest to me is a much stronger and slower-moving storm system that’s expected to roll through next week. Rain showers Monday night and Tuesday could turn into a mix of rain and snow on Wednesday before finally ending Wednesday night. While you might not need it this soon, it may not be the worst idea in the world to go out to the garage this weekend and make sure your snowblower still works. Just sayin’.
