Wisconsin Weather Update

Wisconsin Weather Update for October 31, 2011.

#Snowtober?
So just admit it. On Saturday when you saw pictures and video of a big snowstorm slamming into New England, with some areas receiving 1-2 FEET of snow (Peru, Mass. got 32”!), you were just a little jealous. Not a lot, because it would have also meant shoveling and perhaps driving in it, but it would have also been something exciting to talk about, something neat to look at, something fun to play in with the kids (jack-o-lanterns on snowmen, anyone?), and perhaps your procrastination of raking your backyard leaves would have paid off.
http://www.cnn.com/2011/10/31/us/east-coast-storm /index.html?iref=NS1

But that’s not what we have here in Wisconsin, and this week isn’t showing snowfall either. Instead, we got clouds and rain over the weekend, and this week we get more clouds and more rain developing Tuesday night and Wednesday. A brief warmup tomorrow may put us back to 60 degrees, but don’t get used to it as it drops back into the upper 40s for Wednesday.

Wisconsin Weather Update for October 28, 2011.

By: HaleStorm, 12:40 PM GMT on October 28, 2011

Sparkling white frost on a freshly-cut lawn...

So yesterday after work I mowed my yard for what may very well be the last time until next April. I didn’t finish until after dark (thank goodness for headlights on lawn tractors) so I’m finally able to see my finished piece of work this morning now that the sun has risen. What does this have to do with weather, you ask? Well, let me segway that for you. Our mowed backyard won’t be noticed for too long, as a winter outlook for heavier-than-average snowfall along with colder-than-average temperatures means the time spent with my lawn tractor will change to time with my snow thrower soon enough. Northern Wisconsin has already seen a few flakes this week, but parts of New England actually had a few inches of snow yesterday evening, and some ski resorts in Colorado are already open. Snow is not immediately in our short-term forecast, but rest assured that frosty-white look on the grass this morning soon won’t just be frost.

Wisconsin Weather Update for October 24, 2011.

By: HaleStorm, 12:42 PM GMT on October 24, 2011

So, when’s it going to snow?
Not this week. The storm system that developed the showers and isolated thunderstorms across Wisconsin yesterday has moved off to the northeast, and a pleasant Monday is on tap for us with lots of sunshine and warm late-October temperatures. This ends quickly, however, as a new storm system quickly moves into the area tonight and tomorrow, developing more wind, rain, and perhaps flashes of lightning. Behind this storm system, cooler air will move in, so expect highs only near 50 for the second half of the week and the upcoming weekend.

Wisconsin Weather Update for October 21, 2011.

By: HaleStorm, 12:29 PM GMT on October 21, 2011

Where did the clouds go?
Looking at today’s forecasts both inside and outside of Wisconsin, you’d think that weather itself has just stopped, with just about nothing other than sunshine being reported around the country. And you’d be right, it’s amazing what has just happened in the world as the coriolis force seems to have just suddenly stopped, eliminating all high and low pressure systems from the atmosphere…wait. Hold on. I’m now being told that’s not the case at all. There are clouds in both the northwestern and northeastern United States and rain on the way for Sunday. Well…ummm… carry on, then.
http://www.hpc.ncep.noaa.gov/sfc/ussatsfc.gif

And in case you missed this yesterday, the Climate Prediction Center issued their winter outlook, and stuck Wisconsin right in the colder than average and wetter than average categories. So if you like lots of really cold snow, you’re going to be in luck.

Today’s Forecast Grade: B+
Short-Term Forecast Confidence: Medium to High

Wisconsin Forecast:
Today’s Conditions: Mostly sunny and a little warmer today.
Today’s High Temps: Near 52 east-central, low to mid- 50s south.
Today’s Winds: Not nearly as windy as yesterday. Just a little breezy today from the west.

Raw Model Data: (combined numerical output range from three different NOAA weather models)
Appleton: Highs 51-52.
Madison: Highs 54-55.
Milwaukee: Highs 53-54.
http://www.nws.noaa.gov/cgi-bin/mos/getall.pl?sta =KATW&sta=KMSN&sta=KMKE

Tonight: Stars and a few clouds overnight. Lows in the mid- 30s. Expect another round of frost overnight.

Tomorrow’s Conditions: Partly cloudy.
Tomorrow’s Temps: Warmer, in the mid- 50s east-central, upper 50s to near 60 south.
Tomorrow’s Winds: Light and variable.

Sunday: Mostly cloudy and warmer with scattered showers possible. Highs near 60 east-central, in the low to mid- 60s south. Chance of rain 50%.

Next Week’s Outlook:
Conditions: Rain showers possible again Monday night and Tuesday. The weather models are suggesting that the east coast could get whalloped with a strong rain changing to snow event late next week. Wouldn’t that make the news if it actually happens?
High Temperatures: Near 60 again on Monday, then dropping to near 50 again for the rest of next week.
Extended Forecast Confidence: Medium

Wisconsin Weather Update for October 17, 2011.

By: HaleStorm, 1:00 PM GMT on October 17, 2011

That pesky wind!
Cool Canadian air and a pesky wind were the top weather stories over the weekend, and that trend is going to continue through the first part of this week as well. A deep area of low pressure centered to our north will keep the air flowing quickly across the region. Westerly winds will keep temperatures near where they were this weekend, but unfortunately these are going to eventually switch to a more northwesterly direction by tomorrow. This means colder air will begin flowing in and our temps will drop another 5-8 degrees, remaining there through the rest of the work week. Besides some isolated showers tomorrow and Wednesday, we should have a good amount of sunshine. It’ll be misleading though, and better viewed from the inside. And not directly at it unless it’s rising or setting.

Wisconsin Weather Update for October 14, 2011.

By: HaleStorm, 1:04 PM GMT on October 14, 2011

Good-bye awesome 80s, hello swell 50s.
If you want 80s again, you’re going to have to either travel quite a ways south or turn on channel 8 on your handy XM/Sirius satellite radio. A slow-moving low pressure system centered in Michigan this morning is what generated all the rain and wind yesterday, and its backlash will continue to give us clouds, wind, cool temperatures, and maybe even another passing rain shower today. We may see more rain develop Saturday evening and again perhaps next Tuesday, but otherwise, a sun/cloud mix and highs in the 50s will be the rule of thumb for at least the next week.

Wisconsin Weather Update for October 10, 2011.

By: HaleStorm, 1:03 PM GMT on October 10, 2011

Tell me this weather isn’t going to end!
Carpe diem, because starting tomorrow, it’s going to start feeling like Autumn again. Today we should be outside enjoying one last day of sunshine and high temperatures in the mid- 70s. If you’ve already had a plant-killing frost in your area, you could probably classify this past week as Indian Summer. Tomorrow, Wednesday and Thursday could be wet as a low pressure system invades our region. Behind this storm system, we’ll start seeing colder air flow our way. Expect highs in the 60s on Wednesday and Thursday before struggling to break 60 this weekend. http://www.aos.wisc.edu/weatherdata/sfc/sfc_mw_ma p.gif

Wisconsin Weather Update for October 7, 2011.

By: HaleStorm, 1:36 PM GMT on October 07, 2011

Do we still even have weather?
Like many Wisconsinites this week, I think I’ve forgotten that such a phenomena as weather even exists! I think we may be reminded of its presence just a little today, as near-record high temperatures continue but with a stronger southerly breeze.

When will this mild early October air inevitably drop off? Probably not until late next week! The high pressure system that has stalled in the Ohio Valley is not expected to do very much this weekend (kind of like me, actually). A low pressure system off to our west is going to keep bringing that mild air into our region this weekend and into next week with that strong southerly wind. However, instead of showers and storms, it’s going to bounce off of this stalled high pressure system to our east and go bother Canada instead. So continue to forget about the existence of weather and enjoy this prolonged stretch of summer air!

Wisconsin Weather Update for October 3, 2011.

By: HaleStorm, 12:25 PM GMT on October 03, 2011

What are you doing reading this?
You should be outside enjoying the wonderful early Autumn weather! Okay, if you’re reading this outside from your smartphone or tablet, you’re okay. Or maybe you took your laptop outside, in which case you’re okay too, although that glare from the sun could make it a little hard to read. Or, well, if you’re reading this early in the morning or this evening, it might be a little chilly outside. But otherwise, shame on you for being inside during this lengthy stretch of sunny and mild weather!

Global warming has finally removed all low pressure systems from the face of the earth, meaning we can expect sunny forecasts for as far as my standard forecast goes out. Okay, maybe that’s not how global warming works. I’m a meteorologist, not a climatologist. 
