Wisconsin Weather Update

Wisconsin Weather Update for September 30, 2011.

By: HaleStorm, 1:09 PM GMT on September 30, 2011

WHOOSH!
That pretty much says it all. The winds were howling yesterday evening, reaching peak wind gusts generally in the 40s (mph), although Door County had gusts in the 60s. As for today, the winds are going to gradually slow down as a large area of high pressure moves into the region. This thing is going to stick around for a while, meaning we should have dry and pleasant weather through next week. That cold northerly wind is going to shift starting on Sunday, and warmer air will follow. Highs in the 50s today and tomorrow will turn to 60s Sunday, and we’ll likely even break 70 a few times next week. We won’t have many more of these until next Spring so enjoy it while you can!

Wisconsin Weather Update for September 26, 2011.

By: HaleStorm, 12:33 PM GMT on September 26, 2011

So what have YOU been saving for a rainy day?
Sweep the basement? Dust the ceiling fans? Canasta with the young whippersnappers? All fine options, as just like the last few days, rain will continue to be in our forecast through much of this week. The on-and-off rain, which greatly confused my windshield wipers while driving home from Miller Park yesterday afternoon, switched entirely to the ON position late in the day yesterday, and will continue to soak much of Wisconsin through this afternoon. While the rain may become more scattered as the day progresses, this nearly stationary area of low pressure, centered near Gary, Indiana, will keep rain in the forecast through Thursday. Boo.

Wisconsin Weather Update for September 23, 2011.

By: HaleStorm, 1:04 PM GMT on September 23, 2011

Mostly cloudy with a chance of satellites?
That’s right – a NASA satellite is going out of orbit today, and is likely going to break up into about 26 different survivable pieces and hit somewhere on the Earth. Of course, you have about the same odds of getting hit as you do going out to the store, buying a single PowerBall ticket, winning it, then going out the next day, buying a SuperCash ticket, and winning that too. But someone could get “lucky” today. 
http://www.cnn.com/2011/09/22/us/nasa-satellite/i ndex.html?hpt=hp_bn2

As for non-manmade weather (global warming excluded), our lawns are looking greener after that steady rain came through earlier in the week. The Autumnal Equinox (which began at 4:05am CDT) will start with a few lingering rain showers thanks to a nearly stationary area of low pressure off to our east. This thing is going to be responsible for clouds and scattered showers through the weekend and into early next week. Seriously, this stubborn thing just won’t go away! Temperatures will remain cool through Monday, but we may break 70 again on Tuesday.

Wisconsin Weather Update for September 19, 2011.

By: HaleStorm, 1:01 PM GMT on September 19, 2011

When’s this rain going to end?
Avast, me hearties! Ye water from ye sky should be endin’ soon, y’arrr! Okay, now that I’ve gotten my mandatory “International Talk Like a Pirate Day” reference out of the way, let me just say that our lawns have really needed a good, steady, moderate soaking, and now that they’ve gotten one, the rain can go away now. Thankfully, it will be ending shortly as this cold front sweeps off to the east. We’ve got one more shot at some rain late tomorrow as a new low pressure system quickly churns through the upper Midwest, but after that, we should be dry through the upcoming weekend. Temperatures may cool off a bit behind the front, but will remain fairly-typical for this time of the year.

Wisconsin Weather Update for September 12, 2011.

By: HaleStorm, 11:59 AM GMT on September 12, 2011

Do you really need a weather blog today?
In terms of weather, there’s only one thing you’re really going to care about this week. That is the cold front draping off of a low pressure system currently centered in northwestern Minnesota. While most of the precipitation from this system should remain to our north, it’s going to sweep in a big change in temperatures for the rest of the week. Highs in the 80s today are going to change to highs in the 50s and 60s for the rest of the week. It’s mid- September. Do you know where your jacket is?

Today’s Forecast Grade: A-
Short-Term Forecast Confidence: Medium to High

Wisconsin Forecast:
Today’s Conditions: Partly cloudy and again very warm.

Madison: Highs 81-85.
Milwaukee: Highs 80-87.
http://www.nws.noaa.gov/cgi-bin/mos/getall.pl?sta =KATW&sta=KMSN&sta=KMKE

Tonight: Partly cloudy. An isolated thundershower is possible this evening but there’s a better chance of it missing us to the north. Lows in the lower 50s. Chance of rain just 25%.

Tomorrow’s Conditions: Partly cloudy and much cooler.
Tomorrow’s High Temps: In the mid- 60s.
Tomorrow’s Winds: Breezy from the northwest.

Extended Outlook:
Conditions: Lots of sunshine through the weekend as a large area of high pressure keeps any storm systems to our south.
High Temperatures: Cooler than what we’re used to. In the upper 50s Wednesday and Thursday, then in the 60s for next weekend.
Extended Forecast Confidence: Medium to High

Wisconsin Weather Update for September 9, 2011.

By: HaleStorm, 1:03 PM GMT on September 09, 2011

When’s it going to rain?
Not for a while. We’ve had one of those weeks where you pretty much forget about the weather and just go on with your typical day, whether inside or outside. With all of these tropical cyclones gumming up the works and slowing down the typical flow of high and low pressure systems across the United States, we’ve been forced to deal with high pressure, lots of sunshine, and pleasant temperatures all week long. This dry and warm trend looks to linger through the weekend and into Monday. We may see a shower Monday night, then behind that system much colder air will flow into our region. Highs for the second half of next week may struggle to reach 60!

Wisconsin Weather Update for September 2, 2011.

By: HaleStorm, 1:17 PM GMT on September 02, 2011

A Severe Thunderstorm Watch, already?
Yep. My trusty NOAA weather radio just alerted me to the brand new Severe Thunderstorm Watch, in effect until 11am this morning for an area that belts central Wisconsin (because if you look at a map of Wisconsin, the watch area looks like a giant belt, see?) Anyway, so yeah, very warm and humid weather will continue today and diminish slightly for tomorrow, and an approaching cold front will kick off scattered storms through tomorrow before cooling us off for the rest of Labor Day weekend.

Yesterday’s high temperatures got up to the low to mid- 90s in southern Wisconsin, but they only reached the mid- 80s in east-central Wisconsin. I don’t expect anyone in Wisconsin will hit 90 today due to the incoming clouds and thunderstorm activity, and by Sunday, I might doubt anyone will reach 70!
