Wisconsin Weather Update

Wisconsin Weather Update for August 29, 2011.

By: HaleStorm, 1:14 PM GMT on August 29, 2011

What, sunshine AGAIN?
So let me ask you something. While watching Hurricane Irene coverage over the weekend, did you feel even just a slight twinge of guilt as you later turned off the TV, then went outside and enjoyed yet another day of spectacular sunshine and comfortable temperatures? Our typical late-summer dry spell will continue for most of this week, as high pressure remains in place (partially stalled by the remnants of Irene). Besides an isolated thundershower possible tomorrow evening, we will probably remain dry through most of this work week.

We may get humid again on Thursday and Friday as the next storm system approaches, bringing very warm air from the south and a few storms to our area Friday and Saturday, but after the storm passes, cooler air returns for Sunday and the start of next week. Highs next Monday might only reach the 60s, which may seem cold, but just remember that we’re less than three months away from Thanksgiving!

Tomorrow’s High Temps: Again in the upper 70s to near 80. Dew points near 60.

Conditions: Our next chance of any significant rain might come by on Friday and Saturday, but even that storm is currently projected to pass by southern Canada rather than Wisconsin, so who knows if that’ll even pan out.

Wisconsin Weather Update for August 26, 2011.

By: HaleStorm, 1:33 PM GMT on August 26, 2011

Hurricane Irene
Besides an isolated storm this evening, Wisconsin is going to stay partly cloudy and pleasant through the weekend, so it’s going to be much more interesting talking about Hurricane Irene. This strong category 2 hurricane, originally mapped to possibly hit Florida before turning further east, has weakened slightly from its former category 3 status, and is southeast of the coastal Carolinas this morning. As of now, it’s expected to make landfall over the North Carolina coastline late Saturday morning as a major category 3 hurricane, then weaken as it travels all the way up the New England coast on Sunday, before exiting just west of Nova Scotia on Monday. So while Wisconsinites will surely enjoy our large area of high pressure and its resulting wonderful weekend of weather, keep in mind that others on the east coast are not nearly as lucky.

Wisconsin Weather Update for August 22, 2011.

By: HaleStorm, 1:11 PM GMT on August 22, 2011

Welcome back to summer.
Yesterday was quite the comfortable day outside. Other than a little sprinkle that developed in the afternoon, we had lots of sunshine, and the dew point in Appleton at 1:45pm yesterday was only 48 degrees. I can’t remember the last time it was that comfortable outside, and with that cool breeze, I thought that perhaps Autumn was on its way. But like it or not, heat and humidity is about to return to the Badger state, with highs in the 80s and dew points in the 60s and 70s set to return shortly.

High pressure will give us one more day of sunshine today before a storm system arrives tomorrow. Scattered storms are likely all day tomorrow, and the Storm Prediction Center has put us in the slight risk category for severe weather, meaning there is a 15% of a severe storm hitting within 25 miles of your backyard patio. See the link below if you don’t believe me.

Tomorrow’s Conditions: Mostly cloudy with showers and thunderstorms likely. Slight (15%) chance of severe weather too. Chance of rain 75%.
Tomorrow’s High Temps: Low to mid- 80s. Dew points rising to near 70 again, meaning the humidity is back.

Wisconsin Weather Update for August 19, 2011.

By: HaleStorm, 1:11 PM GMT on August 19, 2011

Did you see a cloud outside yesterday?
Clouds were a rare commodity yesterday, and even as the afternoon passed by, not even typical fair-weather cumulus clouds showed up around here. Okay, there may have been one or two, but seriously, that was about it. Sunshine will continue for the next few hours, but a storm system to our northwest will work together with a small disturbance to our southwest to produce clouds and scattered thundershowers late today, tonight, and through most of tomorrow. Nothing severe is expected, however.

Temperature-wise, we should remain comfortable with dew points expected to remain in the upper 50s to lower 60s. Warm air ahead of these storm systems will likely push us back to the mid- 80s today, but cooler air behind the storms means we’ll be in the 70s this weekend.

Wisconsin Weather Update for August 15, 2011.

By: HaleStorm, 1:05 PM GMT on August 15, 2011

Sunshine and 70s AGAIN?
If cleaning your basement is on your chore list, you might want to procrastinate just a little longer on getting that done. If you didn’t get your chores done yesterday because of the nice weather outside, you’re going to have the same distraction today. Go ahead and use the excuse of it being National Relaxation Day today if you need to. It’ll be slightly warmer today with daytime temps mostly in the 70s, topping off near 80 degrees. We may get a little more uncomfortable tomorrow as southerly air brings slightly warmer temperatures and humidity levels, but our next chance of rain should hold off until late tomorrow or Wednesday morning. Enjoy!

Wisconsin Weather Update for August 12, 2011.

By: HaleStorm, 1:19 PM GMT on August 12, 2011

When’s it going to rain again?
Soon and very soon. So much for the weeks of dry weather we often get in August. An area of low pressure is lollygagging across the central United States, and will eventually make its way from the Dakotas to our area by tomorrow. Scattered showers and thunderstorms will develop ahead of and around the storm system, so keep an umbrella handy today, tonight and tomorrow. Southern and western Wisconsin are under the slight risk category for severe weather today as well, so don’t be too surprised if your trusty NOAA weather radio sirens this evening. Our weather dries out for Sunday, Monday, and most of Tuesday, and temperatures should remain seasonable through next week.

Wisconsin Weather Update for August 8, 2011.

By: HaleStorm, 1:07 PM GMT on August 08, 2011

A (mostly) nice week of weather is on the way…
A slow-moving storm system is making its way across south-central Canada over the next couple days. Clouds will begin to increase later today, and we may see a few isolated thunderstorms develop this afternoon, this evening, and maybe lingering into early tomorrow morning. Behind the cold front, slightly cooler and even less humid air will begin working its way into the western Great Lakes region, meaning our somewhat humid dew points in the 60s will become quite comfortable 50s. Besides a storm that might develop on Friday, our weather is looking dry and comfortable through the weekend, and high temperatures should remain in the 75-80 range, which is presumably just where you want it in the middle of August.

Wisconsin Weather Update for August 5, 2011.

By: HaleStorm, 1:12 PM GMT on August 05, 2011

Temperatures have been above-normal for as long as I can remember.
According to official Green Bay weather statistics, other than a rainy day on July 27, it has been at or above-normal every day since July 14! It has been a little less humid this week with dew points in the 60s rather than the 70s, but high temperatures have remained in the 80s. This warm and somewhat humid air will remain in place through this weekend, but next week finally looks cooler with highs in the 70s and more comfortable dew points near 60. There’s not a lot of rain in the forecast, so besides a few storms tomorrow night and maybe a storm on Tuesday, we can get outside and enjoy the dog days of summer. Woof woof!

Today’s Forecast Grade: A-
Short-Term Forecast Confidence: Medium

Wisconsin Forecast:
Today’s Conditions: Mostly sunny this morning, a few clouds later today.
Today’s High Temps: Near 85. Dew points in the upper 60s means it will remain somewhat humid outside.
Today’s Winds: Light and variable.

Raw Model Data: (combined numerical output range from three different NOAA weather models)
Appleton: Highs 82-84.
Madison: High of 85.
Milwaukee: Highs 80-82.
http://www.nws.noaa.gov/cgi-bin/mos/getall.pl?sta =KATW&sta=KMSN&sta=KMKE

Tonight: Clouds and stars. Lows low to mid- 60s.

Tomorrow’s Conditions: Mostly cloudy. Scattered thunderstorms are possible late in the day. Chance of rain tomorrow night 50%.
Tomorrow’s High Temps: Similar to today with highs in the mid- 80s and dew points in the upper 60s again.
Tomorrow’s Winds: Light from the southeast.

Sunday: Lingering morning thundershowers, then a gradually clearing sky. Highs slightly cooler in the lower 80s but dew points will remain humid early, lingering near 70. We should gradually become less humid late in the day however. Chance of rain 25%.

Next Week’s Outlook:
Conditions: Scattered thunderstorms on Tuesday, otherwise it looks like a dry weather pattern with surface high pressure in control.
High Temperatures: Finally cooler! Highs in the 70s with more comfortable dew points near 60.
Extended Forecast Confidence: Medium

Wisconsin Weather Update for August 1, 2011.

By: HaleStorm, 1:02 PM GMT on August 01, 2011

Ready for the heat and humidity to end?
If you answered “yes”, then it’s best you continue to stay inside for at least the next two days, as our prolonged stretch of very warm and humid weather is expected to continue through tomorrow. We may see more “popcorn” thunderstorms pop up later today, similar to what we had this weekend. Tomorrow an actual storm system moves through, generating a wave of storms that will sweep across Wisconsin from northwest to southeast. We are under a “slight risk” category for severe weather tomorrow as well (see link below). After the front passes through tomorrow, slightly cooler and drier air moves in for the rest of the week, so we can look forward to that.

Today’s Forecast Grade: B
Short-Term Forecast Confidence: Medium to High

Wisconsin Forecast:
Today’s Conditions: Mostly cloudy. A few popcorn thunderstorms may pop up later this afternoon and evening. Chance of rain 50%.
Today’s Temps: Warm and humid with a high of 91. Dew points in the lower 70s.
Today’s Winds: Light and variable, eventually coming from the south.

Raw Model Data: (combined numerical output range from three different NOAA weather models)
Appleton: Highs 86-87.
Madison: Highs 87-90.
Milwaukee: Highs 85-87.
http://www.nws.noaa.gov/cgi-bin/mos/getall.pl?sta =KATW&sta=KMSN&sta=KMKE

Tonight: Clouds and some stars. Maybe some lingering storms in the evening. Lows in the lower 70s. Chance of rain 25%.

Tomorrow’s Conditions: Mostly cloudy with showers and thunderstorms likely. Chance of rain 75%.
Tomorrow’s Temps: Very warm and very humid. Highs in the lower 90s, dew points in the mid- 70s.
Tomorrow’s Winds: Somewhat breezy from the southwest.

Extended Outlook:
Conditions: Perhaps a storm Thursday night, then again Saturday night and into Sunday.
High Temperatures: A little cooler but still a tad above normal with highs in the low to mid- 80s. Dew points in the 60s means it will be a little less humid, but in summertime we look for dew points in the 50s for full comfortability.
Extended Forecast Confidence: Medium
