Wisconsin Weather Update for March 29, 2011.

Good Tuesday morning!

Okay, spring has been here for over a week now and April is almost here. Where's the warm weather?
South of Wisconsin, like usual! But if you're expecting consistent high temperatures in the 60s already, just remember that the normal high for this time of the year is the mid- 40s in east-central Wisconsin and the upper 40s to near 50 in southern Wisconsin. We've been below-normal for a few days now, but we are on a very slow, gradual warming trend. The lower 30s we had as highs yesterday will be replaced with upper 30s today, then we should be in the 40s for the rest of the work week. We may even hit 50 this weekend. Just be glad that we are in a dry weather pattern, which should continue for another few days. We may see a few sprinkles on Friday, but the next chance for any significant rain (and maybe thunderstorms) comes Saturday night and Sunday.

Wisconsin Weather Update for March 25, 2011.

No Weather Update blog today, but it will return on Tuesday morning. Wisconsin's weekend forecast in a nutshell is partly sunny and cold, maybe a few flurries today, with weekend high temperatures only in the upper 20s to lower 30s. A little warmer next week with light snow possible on Tuesday.

Another Winter Storm Warning? Really?
If you live in northern or central Wisconsin, your answer is yes, really. A significant temperature gradient across the state means that most of southern Wisconsin will likely have rain showers with isolated thunderstorms today, tonight and into tomorrow, whereas colder air aloft the further north you go means that most of the precip will fall as sleet or snow in east-central Wisconsin. Southern Wisconsin may not see much in terms of accumulating snow, but east-central Wisconsin could see a wet, messy, and heavy-to-shovel 4-8" of snow on the ground by tomorrow evening. It could be worse, as if you lived in northern Wisconsin where all of the precip is expected to be snow, you'd be looking at 10-15" of new snow! Don't believe me? Check the Rhinelander NWS forecast!

More snow and sleet in east-central Wisconsin with possibly some freezing rain thrown in overnight just to make things even more interesting. 2-4" of new snow accumulation is expected in east-central Wisconsin overnight. Windy with lows in the mid- to upper 20s east-central, lower 30s south.

Wednesday: Scattered light rain or snow showers in southern Wisconsin. Light snow mixed with some freezing rain in east-central Wisconsin. About an inch of additional accumulation is possible in east-central Wisconsin, bringing total storm accumulation to around the 4-8" range. Lucky us, but it could have been worse! Windy with highs in the lower 30s east-central, upper 30s south.


Thursday: Mostly sunny and cold, highs in the upper 20s east-central, lower 30s south.

Conditions: Clouds and flurries on Friday as a new storm misses Wisconsin to the south, then partly sunny on Saturday and more sunshine on Sunday.

Good Friday morning!

So did we actually hit 60 degrees yesterday? I wouldn't know as I was inside watching college hoops all day.
East-central Wisconsin didn't quite make it, with the official high in Green Bay only 53 degrees, but official high temperatures in Madison and Milwaukee were 60 and 65 degrees, respectively. Don't expect a repeat performance, however, as colder air is advecting into the state from Canada, and that will keep our temperatures near-steady in the upper 30s and 40s today. We should warm up a little bit this weekend and into Monday before even colder air returns for the rest of next week. We might even get a new round of snow Tuesday night and Wednesday, so stay tuned!

I heard near 60 degrees by Thursday? Is that true?

If you live in southern Wisconsin, yes, you've got a shot at hitting 60 on Thursday. Cloud cover and scattered rain showers may prevent a 60 from showing up on any outdoor thermometers in east-central Wisconsin, however. Mild air is gradually working its way into the Midwest, and high temperatures should get a boost each day through Thursday. A colder air flow returns on Friday, unfortunately, which will likely return most of our high temperatures back into the 40s through the weekend. If you want a 60 on an outdoor thermometer in east-central Wisconsin, put it on the eastern side of the house and check it mid-morning. Heck, it might even reach 70. :)

Wisconsin Weather Update for March 11, 2011.

Good Friday morning!

So we are approaching the middle of March. When’s it finally going to warm up?

How does Tuesday sound? We're going to stay near or slightly below-normal through Monday, but then we finally get a favorable jet stream pattern which should bring mild air into Wisconsin. High temperatures next Tuesday through Thursday could likely get near or exceed 50 degrees, especially the further south you live.


I'd write more in this intro but I'm getting mesmerized by all of the earthquake/tsunami coverage on TV. The videos/images from the devastation in Japan are just incredible and eerily reminiscent of December 26, 2004.

Southern Wisconsin is going to escape much of the nastiness as more of the precip should fall as rain instead of a mix or snow. This panhandle hook is in a typical heavy-snow pattern where the central area of low pressure dips into Oklahoma and Texas, absorbs a bunch of moisture from the Gulf of Mexico, then shoots northward via the jet stream, creating a heavy storm for much of the Midwest and eastern United States. Temperatures near or above freezing will make any snow that falls rather heavy to shovel (but great for snowballs!), but folks in southern Wisconsin will have more rain puddles than snow forts in their yards.

The precip should end for everyone by tomorrow evening. East-central Wisconsin could see up to 4-6" of snow by tomorrow evening, these amounts are more or less based on how much falls as rain or sleet where you live. Southern Wisconsin will probably have taller puddles than snow blankets. Highs in the lower 30s east-central, mid- to upper 30s south.
Thursday: Partly cloudy, highs in the mid- 30s.

Conditions: Another storm dumps rain or snow on Wisconsin Friday evening and into Saturday morning. This Alberta Clipper could get a little messy too, if it falls as a mix or snow. Some clearing later Saturday and into Sunday.

Ice pellets? Really? What's going on out there?
We had some wacky weather yesterday evening and again early this morning, which mixed some ice pellets in with our rain, making for a quite unwanted soup. And as temperatures went below 32 overnight, some of the rain froze shortly after hitting the ground, making the roads a little slippery in spots in east-central Wisconsin. Today we have more rain expected as this same storm system slowly moves through the central Plains and gradually into the Ohio Valley. The rain today, which will be focused more in the southeastern half of Wisconsin, may turn back to snow this evening before eventually leaving Wisconsin altogether overnight. After this, we should be precip-free through Tuesday, but more rain and wind may arrive Tuesday night and Wednesday.

An area of light rain continues to move through the Fox Valley and Lakeshore this morning. Road temperatures at or below freezing has caused the rain to freeze on contact creating slippery conditions.

At 6am... the heavier rain has moved off over Lake Michigan. Temperatures are expected to improve through the morning hours... ending the threat of additional icing.

Wisconsin Weather Update for March 1, 2011.

Why is March 1st considered the Meteorological first day of Spring?
Mostly it's for better record keeping, as it's easier to compare data year-over-year instead of using the astronomical first day of Spring (Vernal Equinox) which can vary from March 19 to March 23.

Any more snow coming our way?

Of course, that's a silly question. A short-lived and quick-moving disturbance in the atmosphere may give Wisconsinites a fresh 1-2" of new snow to shovel on Thursday, but the next stronger system looks to move through Friday night and Saturday. It's currently tracking to swipe the southeastern half of Wisconsin and could be similar to this past Sunday night's storm that just missed Wisconsin to the south and east. Will this system also miss Wisconsin? Maybe, but if it keeps its current forecast track, look for some slippery road conditions possible on Saturday. After this, the next storm on the horizon is for next Tuesday night, but we'll talk about that one later.
