What's the deal with this storm coming Sunday night?
Well yeah, wouldn't you know it, we're in line for another storm. Many of us are going to get fruit cocktail out of this storm - a little bit of everything, including snow, sleet, freezing rain, and rain - although the further southeast you live in Wisconsin puts you in line for an extra helping. It's a quick-mover and looks to arrive late in the day on Sunday, then be out of here already by early Monday morning. Today: Cloudy, colder and a little breezy. High of 24 east-central, upper 20s south.

Tonight: Clouds with light snow showers or flurries. Less than an inch of accumulation is expected. Lows around 10 above.

Saturday: Cloudy and a little colder with light snow showers expected. An inch or two of accumulation is possible south with maybe an inch in east-central Wisconsin. Highsnear 20.

Sunday: Cloudy during the day with increasing winds later in the day. Warmer with highs in the mid- 30s.

Sunday Night: If I'm putting a Sunday Night line in my forecast, you know something's up. Windy with rain, sleet, freezing rain, and/or snow likely. Precipitation will likely be heaviest in southeastern Wisconsin with lesser amounts the further west or north you live. The final rain/snow line is to be determined but keep an eye on this if you're traveling anywhere Sunday evening. Lows in the mid- 20s.

Next Week’s Outlook:
Conditions: Sunday night's storm system is a quick-mover and should be out of Wisconsin by Monday morning. The next storm system doesn't look to arrive until next Thursday and Friday, and temperatures will probably be warm enough for all of that to fall as rain. If the storm even validates in later weather model runs, that is.
High Temperatures: In the 30s for the first half of the week, but we may approach 40 by Thursday.

Good Tuesday morning!

Didn't the groundhog tell us that it was going to be an early Spring?

Yeah and that's what we were beginning to think after that nice stretch of warm weather melted almost all of our snow, until mother nature played "Gotcha!" and dumped almost a new foot of snow across central Wisconsin. As for this week, expect a stretch of seasonable weather with more clouds than sunshine, occasional flurries, and near or slightly below-normal high temperatures in the upper 20s to mid- 30s.

Good Friday morning!

Wow is it windy outside this morning!
Darn right it is. This very strong wind is blowing hats off people's heads and Wisconsin democratic legislators to hotel bars in Illinois! We missed out on all the snow from this very strong system to our north, but a tight pressure gradient extending through the Great Lakes region will keep the winds swirling through this evening before pushing off to the east.

What's this about a late weekend snowstorm?

Hopefully you weren't getting too used to actually enjoying being outside! Saturday won't be too bad out there, but we get windy and messy again on Sunday as a new, strong storm system rushes past northern Illinois and dumps all sorts of precipitation north of it. It's too early to tell if it will be rain, snow, or a mix, but it'll likely depend on where you live in the state as well as the final track of the storm. Keep a close eye on it if you're planning on leaving the house on Sunday! I suspect the NWS will be issuing some sort of Winter Storm Watch later today or tonight for it.

Wisconsin Weather Update for February 15, 2011.

Good Tuesday morning!

After many weeks of bitter cold, I finally don't hate being outside! How long is the warmth going to last?
It seems surreal that one week ago today I was beyond frigid at Lambeau Field in below-zero windchills cheering the Super Bowl XLV Champions home. Now I'm not even taking my heavy coat outside! If you enjoyed last weekend's temperatures in the 40s (with even a few stray 50s), we'll get another shot at those before the week is done. Mild air continues to flow into the Midwest and temperatures should get to near 40 again today, but by Thursday many of us will be in the 50s. We drop back down into the 30s by this weekend, but with the end of February approaching, there will be plenty more of these days to come.

I am *SO* sick of this bitter cold air. Make it warm up, okay Mister Meteorologist?

Okay, fine, but it's going to take a few hours. After yesterday's high of 7 (Appleton) and 13 (Madison), and early morning temperatures once again in the -5 to -10 range, we should get near or break 20 degrees by this afternoon as warm air starts to arrive. As a cold upper-air jet stream trough turns into a warmer ridge over the next few days, each day should get a little warmer, with highs near 30 expected by tomorrow, and even get close to 40 by Sunday. Breezy conditions will remain (the warmer air has to get here somehow!) but besides a few brief light snow showers or flurries this weekend, we should remain mostly dry through early next week.

No snow in the forecast? What could be better?

How about some warmth? Unfortunately, we're not going to have many degrees until this weekend. Bitter cold Canadian air is rushing southward as a trough in the upper-air jet stream brings a stretch of bitter cold weather from the northern Rockies through the Midwest and the Deep South. Temperatures will likely stay in the single digits through Wednesday, and with consistently breezy conditions, we'll have wind chills well below zero through Thursday. By Friday we should hopefully be back in the 20s, and maybe actually above normal once again by this weekend.

Good Friday morning!

I'm sick of snow. Tell me there's no more weather headlines.
I have good news and bad news. The good news is that besides a few passing light snow showers or flurries, little additional accumulating snow is expected over the next week. The bad news is that we may still have weather headlines, but they will be focused on the bitter cold air arriving next week. We may get to near 30 this weekend, which will be a very pleasant change of pace, but by next Tuesday high temperatures will probably only be in the single digits above zero with wind chills well below zero. Kids, go outside and play in the snow this weekend, because it'll be too cold to play outside next week!

Another big storm could move through the south on Wednesday, then hit the east coast on Thursday. This is expected to miss us altogether, but then again, I said that about the Groundhog Blizzard too. =)
High Temperatures: Mid- teens on Monday, then only in the single digits above zero for the rest of the week. Lows could easily get past -10 on a few days and wind chills will likely be quite nasty out there.

Wisconsin Weather Update for February 1, 2011.

Good Tuesday morning!

I heard Chicago's going to get almost two feet of snow by tomorrow evening! What's Wisconsin getting?
Not quite as much, thankfully, but if you live in southern Wisconsin, you're in for a lot of shoveling as well. A wicked panhandle-hook storm system is currently near Louisiana and absorbing all sorts of Gulf of Mexico moisture. The jet stream is right about to shoot this thing north and cover much of the midwest and east-coast with a heavy blanket of fresh snow. Snow amounts are going to wildly vary based on where you live, with the snow cutoff happening somewhere in east-central Wisconsin, but Madison could see 7-11" and Waukesha could easily get over a foot by tomorrow afternoon.

Tonight: Cloudy and windy. Heavy snow likely in south-central and southeastern Wisconsin. Lighter snow is expected the further north you live. Lowsnear 10.

Wednesday: Cloudy and windy, highs near 20. Snow gradually ends in southeastern Wisconsin, then we may see some clearing late. Total expected snow accumulations are 7-11" around Madison and 10-15" near Waukesha. East-central Wisconsin may see just an inch or two but it's really based on where you live so adjust as necessary.
Thursday: Partly sunny, windy and bitter cold. Highs in the lower teens, wind chills will surely be below zero.

Conditions: Clouds and maybe some light snow late on Friday, then another round of light snow is possible late on Sunday. Both of these storms are looking light at this point.
