Wisconsin Weather Update

Wisconsin Weather Update for January 28, 2011.

By: HaleStorm, 1:51 PM GMT on January 28, 2011

Good Friday morning!

What's the deal with this snow I heard about on the news last night?
While probably overhyped, it's true that a little Alberta Clipper (low pressure system) is going to race past the upper Midwest later today, spreading its fluffy goodness across Wisconsin. Northeastern Wisconsin is expected to get the worst of it, where 3-5" of snow is possible. I'm expecting lesser amounts of about 2-3" in east-central Wisconsin and about 1-2" in southern Wisconsin.

I'm sick of winter! When is spring going to arrive?

Fifty-one days. Yep. Fifty-one (51). So if you're sick of winter and ready for spring, you unfortunately have a while to wait. Maybe Punxsutawney Phil will have better news for you next Wednesday.

Wisconsin Weather Update for January 25, 2011.

By: HaleStorm, 2:00 PM GMT on January 25, 2011

Good Tuesday morning!

Are there any weather stories I should be interested in this week?
Nothing too fascinating, really, as there are no big snowstorms in the forecast and seasonable temperatures in the 20s should continue through the weekend. We may even get close to 30 from time to time. Colder air is currently forecast to return late Sunday and continue through next week, however. We may see some flurries on Thursday and light snow at times Friday and this weekend, but these may be little more than dustings from what I can tell right now.
http://www.hpc.ncep.noaa.gov/sfc/ussatsfc.gif

What are the next few months going to look like?
We are still in a La Nina weather pattern, which for Wisconsin usually means that February and March will be colder than normal, yet with more snow than average. We shall see if this actually pans out. You can read these NWS stories and the official CPC 30-day predictions site below if you are interested in more detail.

Wisconsin Weather Update for January 21, 2011.

By: HaleStorm, 2:07 PM GMT on January 21, 2011

Good Friday morning!

Wow is it cold outside this morning!
You bet it is. Early morning temperatures are around -10 with wind chills in the -20 to -30 range. Milwaukee's Mitchell Airport even broke their 2+ year record of consecutive above-zero temperatures. We may stay in the negatives all day, but thankfully today should be the worst of it. Temperatures look to gradually moderate to around 5-10 above this weekend (still really cold!) but finally back to the 20s by next week.

Give me a Sunday Soldier Field update!

Now that the NFC Championship Game is just a couple days away, there's more weather model data to look at. As of now it's looking mostly cloudy with a light (but not calm) wind. High temperatures are expected to be around 20 degrees. There's discussion of some possible light lake-effect snow showers, but hopefully that stays away until around 6pm Sunday.

Saturday: Partly cloudy and slightly warmer than today. Not much though. Highs still only around 5 above.
Sunday: Mostly cloudy and slightly warmer than Saturday. Again, not much though. Highs around 10 above. Break out the Packers T-shirt and shorts!

Next Week’s Outlook:

Wisconsin Weather Update for January 18, 2011.

By: HaleStorm, 12:48 PM GMT on January 18, 2011

Good Tuesday morning!

Well that snow was a little annoying. We're not getting any more for a while, right?
Correct. Most of us got around 4-5" of fresh snow yesterday, but besides a few flurries from time to time, we should be done with accumulating snow for the rest of the week. Unfortunately, the kids won't want to play outside for long as we will have to deal with an extended stretch of bitter cold air moving in from Canada. Look for temperatures to bell-curve for the rest of the week, bottoming out on Friday before gradually warming up again this weekend and next week. The 2+ year stretch of above zero temperatures in Milwaukee will likely come to an end by Friday as high temperatures will struggle to get above zero!
http://www.jsonline.com/news/wisconsin/113840594.html

Okay, so honestly, who cares about our local forecast? Just tell me what the weather will be like in Chicago on Sunday afternoon.

According to latest NOAA GFSx MOS data, it looks like Sunday in Chicago could be very seasonable - clouds, flurries, and a high of 26. But more importantly, a light wind is expected, which means Aaron Rodgers can let those touchdown passes fly!

Today’s Forecast Grade: B
3-Day Forecast Confidence: Medium to High

Wisconsin Forecast:

Madison: Highs 20-23.

Tonight: Mostly cloudy and cold, lows just above zero.

Wednesday: Mostly cloudy and colder, highs in the mid- teens.
Thursday: Mostly cloudy, windy and cold. Highs near or just above 10 above zero. But wait, it gets even colder on Friday...

This Weekend’s Outlook:
Conditions: Clouds and cold continue Friday and Saturday, and maybe we see a few light snow showers Sunday night. Maybe.
High Temperatures: Barely above zero on Friday as bitter cold arrives. We do gradually moderate, however, with highs near 10 above on Saturday, then in the upper teens on Sunday. Next week looks much warmer with highs in the 20s and maybe even the 30s possible.

Wisconsin Weather Update for January 14, 2011.

By: HaleStorm, 2:06 PM GMT on January 14, 2011

Good Friday morning!

What's the deal with this Alberta Clipper tonight?
It's not a big deal, really. Just a typical, quick-moving storm system coming our way from southwestern Canada. Without a lot of moisture associated with it, snow amounts overnight tonight should just be in the 1-2" range in east-central Wisconsin, and even less the further south you live. It'll probably be gone before you wake up Saturday morning, besides some lingering wind and flurries. It's going to be nothing like Snowmageddon 2011, which dumped tons of snow across parts of the southern and eastern United States a few days ago, but it'll be enough to have to shovel Saturday morning. If you want Snowmageddon around here, you may get your wish on Monday! (in the weather business, we call that a "tease")
http://www.hpc.ncep.noaa.gov/sfc/ussatsfc.gif

So I heard that last year tied 2005 as the warmest year on record. Sure doesn't feel like it outside!

Well yeah, so it was about one degree above normal worldwide on average. But whether it's 15 degrees or 16 degrees outside, that is still going to feel pretty cold!

Today’s Forecast Grade: B
3-Day Forecast Confidence: Medium to High

Wisconsin Forecast:
Today: Cloudy and seasonable today. High of 25.

Raw Model Data: (combined numerical output range from three different NOAA weather models)
Appleton: Highs 20-21.
Madison: Highs 20-21.
Waukesha: Highs 22-23.
http://www.nws.noaa.gov/cgi-bin/mos/getall.pl?sta=KATW&sta=KMSN&sta=KUES

Tonight: Cloudy and breezy with snow showers overnight. Looks to be around 1-2" in east-central Wisconsin and an inch or less south. Lowsin the lower teens.

Saturday: Cloudy, breezy and colder with just some lingering flurries. Look out for a green and gold blizzard in Atlanta tomorrow evening! Highs in the upper teens to near 20.
Sunday: Clouds and colds. Highs just above 10.

Next Week’s Outlook:
Conditions: A new, strong storm system looks to move through the Midwest on Monday and could make life rather interesting, especially the further south you live, so keep a close eye on that. Wouldn't be surprised to see up to 6" of snow from this thing, but we'll see how it shapes up as it gets closer. Otherwise, sunny and cold on Tuesday, then some light snow possible on Wednesday.

Wisconsin Weather Update for January 11, 2011.

By: HaleStorm, 2:01 PM GMT on January 11, 2011

Good Tuesday morning!

How long is it going to snow today?
I think we can expect scattered snow showers on-and-off through this afternoon, then tapering off to flurries by this evening and overnight. Another 1-2" of snow are expected today on top of what we got overnight last night. Just think, if we lived in the southeastern US, this much snow would shut down our state for two days!
http://www.hpc.ncep.noaa.gov/sfc/ussatsfc.gif

A warm-up is in our future, right Mr. Meteorologist?

Uhhh, wrong again. We have some warmer air in place today mostly because it tends to warm into the upper 20s or lower 30s ahead of and during a snowfall, but temperatures go back to just over 20 again by tomorrow. The extended weather models are looking at some arctic air coming in for next week too, so you'll have to wait a while yet to get that nice break from the cold. Maybe by then the groundhog will have better news for you.
http://www.aos.wisc.edu/weatherdata/sfc/sfc_mw_map.gif

NowCast: (Source: National Weather Service)
Southern Wisconsin:
Light snow will continue through the morning...with new snow accumulations of one half inch to one and one half inch most areas. Visibilities in the snow will be mostly between 1 and 3 miles. The gradual buildup of light snow will result in slick spots and stretches developing on untreated roadways...secondary roads and overpasses. Drive with caution this morning due to the deteriorating travel conditions.

Today’s Forecast Grade: C
3-Day Forecast Confidence: Medium

Wisconsin Forecast:
Today: Cloudy with scattered snow showers. 1-2" of new snow is generally expected. We already had about 1-2" of light snow last night so this would make the storm total around 2-4". Yeah, I can do math. High of 28. Chance of measurable snow 95%.

Raw Model Data: (combined numerical output range from three different NOAA weather models)
Appleton: Highs 27-28. Chance of precip 73-88%.
Madison: Highs 27-28. Chance of precip 83-90%.
Waukesha: Highs 27-29. Chance of precip 88-96%.

Tonight: Cloudy and breezy with lingering flurries. Lows in the lower teens.

Wednesday: Mostly cloudy and breezy. Highs in the low to mid- 20s.
Thursday: Clouds and a little colder. Highs in the upper teens to near 20.

This Weekend’s Outlook:
Conditions: More clouds on Friday with light snow developing Friday night. It's a quick-moving Alberta Clipper so I'd just expect an inch or two at the most. Otherwise, expect clouds on Saturday, then another chance for light snow on Sunday.
High Temperatures: Generally in the 20s, although we could be in for a cold snap next week.

Wisconsin Weather Update for January 7, 2011.

By: HaleStorm, 2:05 PM GMT on January 07, 2011

Good Friday morning!

Those dustings of snow we had Monday and Wednesday were very cute. When's the next big storm coming?
Not for at least a week. Did you just buy a snowblower or something? That always happens after making a big purchase, and is similar to the scientifically-proven method of preventing rainfall by just carrying an umbrella with you. If you are glad those dustings of snow earlier this week covered up most of our grass, you will be pleased to know that another dusting is expected today, which may take care of those few taller grassy areas left. A storm expected to move across the country Monday and Tuesday may miss us to the south, and another storm is currently projected to hit Wisconsin next Friday night, but with that one still 7+ days out, let's just keep that on the down-low for right now.

Are we going to warm up anytime soon?

Nope, in fact, just the opposite for today. An area of low pressure centered near Lake Huron this morning has brought colder air into the Great Lakes region, so expect temperatures just a few degrees colder than yesterday. We warm up slightly this weekend and next week, but with a cold jet stream pattern expected to stay mostly consistent, expect highs in the 20-25 degree range through most of next week.

NowCast: (Source: National Weather Service)
Southern Wisconsin:
look for scattered flurries or very light snow for the early morning commute. Locations along and southwest of a Mineral Point to Kenosha line will be most likely to see the light snow between 630 am and 8 am. Another band of light snow and flurries will approach northern sections of the region in the mid to late morning. Little to no accumulation is expected. Look for cloudy skies and temperatures slowly rising from the single digits and low teens through mid morning.

Wisconsin Weather Update for January 4, 2011.

By: HaleStorm, 1:57 PM GMT on January 04, 2011

Good Tuesday morning!

Hey! There's snow on the ground again. Where did that come from?
A little area of low pressure that moved through late yesterday, and is now over eastern Michigan this morning. And if that wasn't enough for you, we may see another inch or so of snow develop tomorrow.
http://www.hpc.ncep.noaa.gov/sfc/ussatsfc.gif

It's not going to get cold again, right?

Uhhh... wrong. Unfortunately, the low pressure system mentioned above also had a cold front with it, meaning temperatures behind the front will be colder than they were yesterday. Expect daytime highs only in the upper teens to near 20 today.
http://www.aos.wisc.edu/weatherdata/sfc/sfc_mw_map.gif

When's Spring going to get here?

March 20. It's true. Look it up.
