Wisconsin Weather Update

Wisconsin Weather Update for December 31, 2010.

By: HaleStorm, 2:10 PM GMT on December 31, 2010

Good Friday morning!

What's the deal with this fog?
Mild air ahead of a strong area of low pressure just to our north will keep us warm, foggy and drizzly for one more day. This nearly-stationary system has brought warm, stagnant air to our region, and with both temperatures and dew points near 40, our relative humidity near 100%, and a light or calm wind, this created our blanket of fog yesterday and will continue today. Snow, we hardly knew ye.
http://www.hpc.ncep.noaa.gov/sfc/ussatsfc.gif

Are these warmer temperatures going to stick around?
Yes - in fact, temperatures should remain above-normal through the end of this year! Unfortunately, the moment our clocks strike midnight tonight, a cold front will sweep through and rapidly drop our temperatures about 20 degrees. This means you can not only expect a return of cold temperatures through the weekend and next week, but any water lingering on roadways could "flash freeze" tonight, making roads icy really quickly if you're driving home from a New Year's party.

Wisconsin Weather Update for December 28, 2010.

By: HaleStorm, 2:07 PM GMT on December 28, 2010

Good Tuesday morning!

Is it going to snow again before 2011?
A better question would be if it is going to rain again before 2011. And the answer to this second question is yes. A strong low pressure system is expected to develop and shower us with rain showers both Thursday and Friday. With temperatures expected to be above freezing late this week, the precip should stay mostly as rain instead of a mix or snow, at least until Friday night when cold air returns to the state, but by then the precip should be just about ending. Hopefully.
http://www.hpc.ncep.noaa.gov/sfc/ussatsfc.gif

I heard rumors of 40s by the end of the week. Is that true?

Uhhh... yeah, actually, but don't get too excited over it as rain's probably going to accompany it. Warm air will surge northward into the Great Lakes region ahead of a strong cold front which is expected to move through Friday night. Highs on Thursday will approach 40 and should break 40 on Friday, but clouds and scattered rain showers both Thursday and Friday will take away some of the joy from this temporary stretch of warmer weather. And with highs going back to the low to mid- 20s on Saturday, the warm air won't stick around after the rain's gone. Sorry!

Wisconsin Weather Update for December 21, 2010.

By: HaleStorm, 3:06 PM GMT on December 21, 2010

Good Tuesday morning!

When is this snow going to end?
Probably by this evening. Although, does changing from light snow to light freezing drizzle count as snow ending? It would only be appropriate to have a pretty light snow on the Winter Solstice, but it looks like as temperatures warm up to near 32 degrees, any light precipitation that falls could be flakes or freezing rain. The Winter Weather Advisories for Wisconsin are ending this morning, and any precip that does fall this afternoon and evening should be pretty light and hopefully not cause too much havoc out there on the roads. Probably a fine day for building a snowman or having a snowball fight; just don't throw any ice balls at windows or cars, okay?
http://www.crh.noaa.gov/news/display_cmsstory.php?wfo=mkx&storyid=44873&source=0

http://www.hpc.ncep.noaa.gov/sfc/ussatsfc.gif

Is it going to snow again before Christmas?

Probably not, actually. My previous weather blog had mentioned a potential early Christmas Eve snow, but while this storm system is still expected to exist, it may miss almost all of Wisconsin to the south. So, unless you're driving to Iowa or Illinois this weekend, your drive should hopefully be uneventful. Except for your kids yelling at you for hours from the back seat asking if we're there yet.

Important Weather Statement: (Source: National Weather Service)
Fox Cities:
... Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect until noon CST today...
* Snow will diminish to flurries or freezing drizzle this morning.
It may increase in intensity again this evening and continue overnight.

* Another inch or so of snow is expected this morning... with some
small ice accumulation from the freezing drizzle. Some
additional snow accumulation is possible tonight.

* The combination of snow and freezing drizzle will produce
hazardous travel conditions across the region today.

Precautionary/preparedness actions...

A Winter Weather Advisory for snow means that periods of snow
will cause some travel difficulties. Be prepared for snow covered
roads and limited visibilities... and use caution while driving.
The latest Wisconsin Road conditions can be obtained by calling
511.
http://www.wunderground.com/DisplayDisc.asp?DiscussionCode=GRB

Southern Wisconsin:
... Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect until 9 am CST this morning...
* Timing... areas of freezing drizzle will continue through the
early morning hours. As temperatures warm... the freezing drizzle
will become patchy drizzle and gradually taper off this
afternoon.

* Ice accumulations... less than one tenth inch.

* Impacts... roads may become icy early this morning. Conditions
should improve later this morning... as temperatures rise to
near or above the freezing mark.

Precautionary/preparedness actions...

A Winter Weather Advisory means that periods of snow... sleet... or
freezing rain will cause travel difficulties. Be prepared for
slippery roads and limited visibilities... and use caution while
driving.

Wisconsin Weather Update for December 17, 2010.

By: HaleStorm, 2:20 PM GMT on December 17, 2010

Good Friday morning!

Is it going to snow again before Christmas?
Probably. We may see a few light snow showers or flurries tomorrow as a strengthening area of low pressure near the southern tip of Hudson Bay keeps the region mostly cloudy and breezy. More light snow is possible Monday evening, but shouldn't amount to more than an inch or so. The last system to arrive before Christmas may show itself early on Christmas Eve and could be some accumulating snow so it's worth keeping an eye on. As of now Christmas Day itself looks dry though.
http://www.hpc.ncep.noaa.gov/sfc/ussatsfc.gif

Will our snow be melting anytime soon?

We may see some melting snow next week. Temperatures look to stick in the teens through this weekend, but then warm into the 20s starting on Monday. We might even see a few 30s crop up, which will be well-received I'm sure. The question is whether the three questionable storm systems above keep our snow levels equal to whatever melts with warmer temperatures next week. Southern Wisconsin does not have quite the current snow depth that we do in the Fox Valley either (just a trace in Milwaukee but 5" in Madison and 8" in Green Bay).

Today’s Forecast Grade: B
3-Day Forecast Confidence: Medium to High

Wisconsin Forecast:
Today: Partly sunny and just a little breezy. High of 19.

Waukesha: Highs 17-22.

Tonight: Cloudy, lows near or just above zero. Sure beats the double-digit below-zero lows we've had Wednesday and Thursday morning though!

Saturday: Cloudy and breezy, maybe a light snow shower or flurry. Highs just in the mid- teens.
Sunday: Cloudy, highs in the mid- to upper teens.

Next Week’s Outlook:
Conditions: Maybe some light snow Monday night, otherwise mostly cloudy through Wednesday. The next storm system looks to come through Thursday night and Friday (Christmas Eve), and might be some accumulating snow so it's worth keeping an eye on.
High Temperatures: Thankfully warmer than this week with highs in the 20s to near 30. In other words, snowball weather!

Wisconsin Weather Update for December 14, 2010.

By: HaleStorm, 1:41 PM GMT on December 14, 2010

Good Tuesday morning!

When’s it going to snow again?
Wednesday night. Maybe. A small disturbance in the force may develop some light snow or flurries across our area late Wednesday and Thursday morning, but it doesn't look to be anything to worry about. It will probably end up just being a dusting, maybe an inch at the most.
http://www.hpc.ncep.noaa.gov/sfc/ussatsfc.gif

When’s all this snow going to melt?

Not for a while. Temperatures are expected to stay below normal through the rest of this week and this weekend courtesy of a jet stream flow that will continue to bring cold Canadian air into the states. We'll warm up a few degrees by tomorrow at least, which is good, but I'm not sure if it'll be quite enough to make all of our snow packy enough to make snowballs and snowmen.

Wisconsin Weather Update for December 10, 2010.

By: HaleStorm, 1:46 PM GMT on December 10, 2010

Good Friday morning!

When’s it going to snow?
Tomorrow. A developing low pressure system currently in western Montana is going to race to the Midwest and develop snow across all of Wisconsin. Much of Wisconsin's under a Winter Storm Watch, although this does not include far southern and southeastern Wisconsin, where some of this precipitation will fall as rain Saturday morning before turning to snow later in the day. East-central Wisconsin is currently expected to see 5-8" of snow, with 3-5" possible in southern Wisconsin. The National Weather Service out of Milwaukee/Sullivan has a nice recap of what's expected tomorrow. You can read it at the link below:

When’s it going to warm up?

Today and tomorrow won't be bad with highs near or above 30, but then bitter cold comes in with highs on Sunday and Monday struggling to hit double digits.

Wisconsin Weather Update for December 7, 2010.

By: HaleStorm, 1:24 PM GMT on December 07, 2010

Good Tuesday morning!

When’s it going to snow?
Thursday and Saturday. There's a quick-moving Alberta Clipper without a lot of moisture content that's going to buzz past us on Thursday, and could drop an inch or two of snow during the day. There's a much stronger Panhandle Hook-type system that's expected to develop and move through the midwest on Saturday. While this storm will have a lot more moisture associated with it, this one's all about location, location, location. Some of the media might be hyping a weekend snowstorm, but the latest weather models are showing a lot of uncertainty as to the final track of the storm. The GFS model is showing this strong storm mostly missing us to the south, yet the ECMWF model brings a significant snow to our area. So in other words, stay tuned.
http://www.hpc.ncep.noaa.gov/sfc/ussatsfc.gif

When’s it going to warm up?
June. But if you can't wait that long, we should return to the mid- to upper 20s Thursday through Saturday, ahead of the big storm system I mentioned above. Unfortunately, nasty cold will follow with highs on Sunday and Monday barely making double digits above zero. 'Tis the season!

Wednesday: Partly sunny, highs again near 20.
Thursday: Cloudy and windy with light snow showers. Could be 1-2" of snow but that's about it. Highs in the mid- 20s.

This Weekend’s Outlook:

Wisconsin Weather Update for December 3, 2010.

By: HaleStorm, 1:39 PM GMT on December 03, 2010

Good Friday morning!

Wisconsin Forecast Synopsis
Our first somewhat significant snowstorm of the season is about to set sail on our shores. A Winter Storm Warning is in effect for far southwestern Wisconsin where 5-7" of snow is expected tonight and tomorrow. Around the Madison area, there's a Winter Weather Advisory (see below) with 4-6" of snowfall expected. The Milwaukee area may see about 4" by tomorrow afternoon, but the Fox Valley is going to be mostly unscathed with only an inch or so of accumulation. This snowfall is going to be caused by a rapid-moving area of low pressure which is currently in the central Rocky Mountains.

After the snow ends, this system is going to merge with a stronger, stationary area of low pressure in eastern Canada, which will keep us windy and cold next week. While there's almost no snow in the forecast for next week, whatever lands tonight and tomorrow may stick for a while with highs only near 20 expected. Bundle up!
